Atoms are mostly empty space, so if these high speed protons were to pass through you they would just pass through you. Atoms are mostly empty space, so if these high speed protons were to pass through you they would just pass through you. Astronauts experience this in space as particles speeding through space pass through them. This is what can cause cancer because it destroys their DNA and damages cells as it passes through them.

@G0JETSG0 elementary particles. It was found that when the two collide the new particles are created and they are not necessarily smaller. That's why they are getting more questions than the answers. It was said that division of elementary particles is dangerous, can't remember who said that though. Scientists insist that building evern more powerfull accelerators will allow to achieve greater energies for particle collision, but one day this could lead us to the discovery of unknown territories

Is there anyone who can explain this in layman terms. I am not familiar with sort of thing and would actually like to learn. @tintin1244 In laymans terms it sends two sets of hydrogen (a gas) atoms (really really small parts of hydrogen) in circles while speeding them up by using magnets (because magnets repel opposite charges, which they are) then they send them in bigger circles to speed them up some more, then after that they send the two different sets of atoms in different directions in an even BIGGER circle and hope they hit each other.

They have beat the speed of light, the particles have been sent around now faster than the speed of light, they have done it several times with the same result, and are asking other colldiers and researchers to verify it, if its true, E=MC(squared) would no longer applied, and Einstein's law would be invalidated.
