Warren Haynes is one of the most prolific guitarist/songwriters of the past century. I consider myself lucky to have seen Gov't Mule at their 1000th concert in San Francisco. I hope he continues to write music for years to come.
My only beef with this recording is the crowd won't shut up at the beginning. They're playing, and everyone's still talking. They need to STFU while these guys are playing.
After I lost my wife to cancer in 2001, singing this song became therapudic. I talked to Warren about this song once, and he told me it was about a friend of his who had commited suicide.
Nothing like old school Mule. I love finding these old videos. This song is moving and passionate and heavy. Long live Warren Haynes. Remember Allen Woody.
First time I saw Govt Mule was at the original Higher Ground in Wonooski Vt. They blew the roof off the place and played this song too. Met up with the late great Allen Woody after the show. Trust me this was a weekend I will never forget. What a great band. RIP Woody.

Warren at his best - glimpsing inner depths, making them universal. Many thanks for sharing this poignant recording.
