i´m from Argentina, is the first I've heard this, and I can´t believe is PERFECT, good times, where only enjoyed the music (my english is so terrible, sorry)
What, some dont realize is Leslie was playin Like this way back in the mid / late 60's ."The Vagrants" was His Band from L.I.N.Y.; the power trio's came in and the timing was perfect for Him to step Up. They opened for many Top Bands then and We knew He was Hot.
The first time I saw Mountain at age 15, I bought a cheap electric guitar with hopes of playing like Leslie West. Unfortunately, I was not the least bit musically inclined. But hey, we cannot all be guitar gods.
Whatever you think of Mountain vis-a-vis other artists, there is no doubt they turned in one the best performances at Woodstock. Band was tight, sound was full and balanced, playing was inspired...and Leslie lookin' pretty.
Plus, who else thinks Sean Astin should play Leslie in any future movie about Mountain?
Ok some bands obviously didnt need the exposure from woodstock cuz they were already around for a while.....but if Mountain got in the movie they would have been huge and leslie would have got the respect he deserves. Only a few bands really shined at woodstock, mountain most of all...shame they're only known for one song in mainstream rock...
I seen mountian at the cincinatti rock festival in 1970 and they played this as well as all their rest......one of my favorite 60s bands.....I was in high school when the album "mountian climbing" came out.....great times great memories! leslie west is respondsible for more sales of the les paul junior guitar then anyone. cant get that sound without it!
The absolute best guitar tone ever! Man I've been a Leslie West and Mountain fan since I was a wee lad...I've been a guitarist myself for 47 years and played in bands since 1974 and I have never got tired of Mountain, I have all the cd's some dvd's and still jam to them and listen to them every day. I surely hope that Leslie gets into the RnR Hall of Fame!
Leslie West is currently recovering and refuses to quit!
He's back on stage, from knife back to the mic, within 60 days. Simply the baddest man in Rock, and with the biggest heart. 45 years entertaining rock fans and counting!!! Long Live Leslie West!!!!
I saw Mountain, Grand Funk Railroad and the James Gang live at the Filmore East battle of the 3 piece....what a concert...3rd row center man was I trippin...and not on acid either on music
I wonder why Leslie gives Felix a dirty look around 1:40. And seems to yell "come on" at him. Definitely didn't sound like he lost his groove. Hell it was the end of their set.
this is such a Jimmy Page or Beck style riff and song. Way more rockin' than the Who to me..not the drummer but the guitar SOARS and is really HEAVY. He's definately got some Hendrix in him too.haha but he sounds original at the same time and of course the tone.
lol does anybody else find Grateful Dead's "Turn on your lovelight" on that dvd completely unlistenable not to mention it's close to a half hour for one shitty song ..Mountain is great on there, this and Beside the Sea, Johnny Winter, Joe Cocker, Santana, Airplane and Country Joe's song is cool too. The Who and CCR also.
So I guess I need to spend $70.00 to see only 2 Mountain songs on the new Woodstock dvd..They should have included more footage of them. I will get it on blu ray..I.have to now...
At 5:55 it looks like Leslie was paying through 3 Sunn heads and 3 Sunn botoms and a Fender Super reverb on top of one of the Sunn heads. What a killer sound.
Corky DID in fact, but it wasnt for Mountain! He wasnt even there. A great rock n roll Secret:
Rick Lee's drumsticks broke during the live recording of I'm Going Home and he did not have a backup set available. Afterward, Ten Years After asked Corky to lay down drums and he did, for all 22 minutes. Research "Corky Laing - Stick It".
Many prayers going out to the King of Tone. The leg amputation was a success. Now the toughest part begins, the recovery. We are all behind you Leslie! You have a wonderful family and friends around you. We will lift you up like you've lifted US up. Long live Leslie West!!!!!
I hate to brag, but I was one of the lucky ones to see Mountain in 1970 at the Chicago Auditorium Theater. They were playing backup to Joe Cocker if you can believe it. Perfect acoustics, Steve Knight with a Hammond C-3 and 3 leslie cabs on each side of the stage and a wall of Sunn amps for the Leslie and Felix. They were using the Who's PA system which was set up in stereo. Third song was Theme for an Imaginary Western and the crowd was on their feet the rest of the set. Best sound ever.
THIS SONG KICKS SO MUCH UNBELIEVABLE ASS IT MAKES ME CRY..WHAT A DAMN ERA..WHEN I HEAR THE SHIT THATS OUT THERE NOW I GET SO ANGRY AT WHAT THEY CALL TALENT........................
I usually just read comments for a laugh, kids today need to get off of the couch & do something "real". Comments left like he plays great but he's fat, is he missing teeth, it must not have been a very good show. We'll never see that again-WRONG ASS MUNCH! Hop in your parents car and find out. A lot of those bands still get together, heavy hitters are still jamming-sadly many of the originals are gone, but they're many still jammin -so if looks make music-congrats, you can join the army now!
@lovelyflares -Papp was a big loss - those 2 were magic together-someone wrote that this was his breakout to stardom-he never reached "star" status with the general public-99% of listeners can't name 3 mountain tunes. Of course West is still around-he is Les Paul (Jr.-pun intended). My previous jab was directed towards the ignorant comments of the I'm sure Britney crowd & their looks count BS. Most of the comments here have been right on-it's bone shakin music
Leslie West became a breakout international superstar at Woodstock, and his star shown brightest on this very song. Leslie hit a home run, turning his great unknown song into one of the greatest tone monster jams of all time.
Thank God this tone has been preserved for ever more. Long live the brilliance and the beauty of the King of Tone, Leslie West.
I cant quite describe how many hearts this man has touched. Just a super kind man, in a world of ignorance and danger. His soul is larger than any problem he ever had and will ever face. He will be remembered as once of the all time greats in the rock guitar world.
Seems that more people are begining to be aware West, Pappalardi, Corky etc. West was and still is a monster. Too bad it's taken so long. This is a unit that blew people away in the early '70s. But they are a band that deserves so much more credit and attention. Saw Lesie one time in Dallas. He was late. Pulled up in a limo with his junior hooked up with hoohers at his side and jumped on stage. Shit.
A Les Paul Jr. was a tree with a microphone, with a 400 lb engine (Leslie West), with 200 lbs of hair and 400 lbs of soul. That's 1,000 pounds of Rock n Fuckin Roll on that stage folks!!! :) Oh yeah, and this happens to be my favorite solo at Woodstock.
@faunoram I LOVE it ! Your so right dude ! Nothing but no skill shit heads out there now. Trying to hide behind all there effects..... Id love to walk up to one of them make up fags wth just a guitar plugged str8 into the amp..... Ok super star play me some thing !!!! Being a guitar player myself..i wish i had half of Leslie`s tone in my hands ...Always been a huge fan of Mr West !
Just sweet-guys like West, Miller,Cipollina and a bunch of others are always over looked, it's a shame for kids today-most will never know-great stuff.
I first saw Mt. in Houston in about '71 or '72 or so.. The first time I saw a lead guitarist depart from the song and go on a long excursion into dark territory. He made his guitar sound like a violin and played a few classical symphony numbers, then back to the main song. I really thought I was halucinating. Until then I had no clue that was possible. He is so much more than Miss. Queen, although that is a masterpiece and the quintessential West tune.
Truly mind-boggling when you think about it, after 40+ years of "innovation" of equipment and technique, I can find nothing and noone that emits this combination of raw emotion via voice and the guitar. One of the greatest guitar virtuosos of our time.
Great & amazing Guitarist ! What would Leslie have said at fragment 01:41 ?? Thanks MrFragx for uploading this video, with great HD quality and beautiful audio !
There's pics mrbag60 and guess who played a bass because that's all that was available -- Hendrix. You can find photos. I get the feeling stepping on stage with West in the '70s could have been pretty intimidating. But it wasn't because he was as studied as Vai or Satriani - it was because he was a mauler. He was pushing. He was passin' through.
Hendrix no doubt loved to play guitar with this guy. I don't know if Leslie was tooting his own horn but on one of the videos he talked about Hendrix asking him if he wanted to jam for awhile and they essentially jammed until the wee hours of the morning with Leslie on guitar and Hendrix on bass. Man i would have loved to be a fly on the wall for that jam session.
If only we could go back in time. All this music is way before my time being I'm only 26, but I grew up on a lot of this stuff because of my dad etc. I love classic rock, it doesn't get any better than their time period. This is when the concerts weren't fancy, no crazy lighting or pyrotechnics, just a group of folks doing what they do best .. shredding instruments.
@danthaman409 things were more open from 1966-75 when the wall of separation of rock artists from fans wasn''t as wide as it is now and their was a lot of experimentation with new sounds and recording techniques taking place. You also had Progressive/Free-Form FM stations focusing on album cuts not pop. Around 76' music started changing with AOR, disco, and punk replacing progressive rock, and then with music industry consolidation, music gradually became just another commodity to profit from.
@mrbag60 yeah and "pregressive/free-form" FM stations became "Corporate Radio" stations. Today, everywhere i tune up and down FM frequencies, all they play is the same shit over and over again. Hell, satellite radio is almost as bad or worse with even MORE channels playing the same SHIT over and over again. with a few tiny exceptions with some FEW decent channels.
@cydonianman I remember AM radio in the 60's to the mid-70's was pretty conservative, adhering to a strict 3 minute rule for songs, to make as much money as possible, but then at least it seemed the DJ's had distinct personalities and their was a higher ratio of memorable musical nuggets amongst the superficial crap to keep me interested at that time. Now the new music is so boring and squeezed dry of any spontaneity that its painful to listen to, while classic rock radio is on life support.
@NewMusicSpacequake: You are right, unique in their own right. The one thing lacking was Led Zeps manager PETER GRANT, who revolutionized the way rock artists would be paid.
Grew up on the big guy. He made others around him better. A go-to when I need attitude, originallity and brute force. Has not been recognized at all. I credit Felix. But Leslie was and is such a force.
it's sad none of my friends have heard of mountain when i played them some the other day way underrated leslie west super guitarist wore out my dads old vider playing this song over and over rewinding it all the time so got it on dvd so i gam skip right to this song not that that's the onky good song at woodstock but it's up there as one of the best but i think every one got over shadowed by jimi hendrix shame
@TheBobvela It is on the Leslie West "Mountain" Album, whcih came out before the band formed. This song is a studio version and lacks the energy of the live version here.
@motorcityquig It sure does lack the live version. I actually have this album and I didn't even make the connection. They must have practiced a lot between the time they recorded it and this.
@TheBobvela VINTAGE LESLIE WEST. The studio album was always designed only to lay down the songs as written and crafted. If you listen closely to any Mountain song that isnt live, its designed for radio play. However, its the CONCERT that awoke the Beast, which is Mountain. When he was ON, no one could light a stage up like Leslie West. The greatest guitar tone in the world. He's itting of the name lovingly given by fans, "The King of Tone."
This guy was and is a monster. Pappalardi, who produced Cream, came on a hell of a journey with him and produced some of THE greatest tunes I have in my stock.
last dude so fin right - my son just got into 70's and he recognizes how brilliant West and the boys are - yes for Yasguars farm maybe best rock song of all time
To truly appreciate Mountain, you had to see them live. They one of the few rock acts i saw that would improvise. There was no telling how long Leslie would jam on a particular song. I also think the reason the band is so unappreciated is the fact most people know them from "Mississippi Queen" being played over and over on classic rock staions, therefore thought of as a one hit wonder band.
I feel your pain. This guy Leslie West was a great talent. You know why he was largely forgotten after Woodstock? Because he was a fat disgusting pig. Also check out his grille - bad teeth too. I'm being bruttaly honest because in America everyone wants beauty. Take Eric Clapton, great talent + handsome = superstar. But had he gone bald, he'd be out on his ass with a one way ticket back to Austalia, or whever the hell he comes from. Case closed. Boys Who Cry rules.
Although I like all of their material, I believe this selection is better than everything else that has been released of their Woodstock appearance. By the way, was "Mississippi Queen" released AFTER the Woodstock Festival?
@kcolpaer Mississippi Queen was after. Actually Mountain had only been a group for a week at the woodstock festival. This was their 4th gig as a band.
Wish this had been included in the director's cut of the documentary film. Criminal to have waited so long to see the images that accompany the music only released, finally, in 1994.
my favourite band of all time, i was really into hendrix a while ago but i cannot stop listening to mountain stuff now, leslie's solo album from 69, climbing, nantucket sleighride, fillmore east all these albums, they're aewsome, too bad he's so underated and not recognized, Leslie West is God, pioneer of pinch harmonics
The best WoodStock song, saw Leslie W. he's the best.

Just sweet-guys like West, Miller,Cipollina and a bunch of others are always over looked, it's a shame for kids today-most will never know-great stuff.

I need the lyrics to this song!!

I really enjoy everytime.

Classic blues rock. West's tasteful guitar still stands out among all the psychotic metronomes who followed.
PihaSandDunes 1 year ago
Hendrix no doubt loved to play guitar with this guy. I don't know if Leslie was tooting his own horn but on one of the videos he talked about Hendrix asking him if he wanted to jam for awhile and they essentially jammed until the wee hours of the morning with Leslie on guitar and Hendrix on bass. Man i would have loved to be a fly on the wall for that jam session.

@mrbag60
If only we could go back in time. All this music is way before my time being I'm only 26, but I grew up on a lot of this stuff because of my dad etc. I love classic rock, it doesn't get any better than their time period. This is when the concerts weren't fancy, no crazy lighting or pyrotechnics, just a group of folks doing what they do best .. shredding instruments.
danthaman409 1 year ago
@danthaman409 things were more open from 1966-75 when the wall of separation of rock artists from fans wasn''t as wide as it is now and their was a lot of experimentation with new sounds and recording techniques taking place. You also had Progressive/Free-Form FM stations focusing on album cuts not pop. Around 76' music started changing with AOR, disco, and punk replacing progressive rock, and then with music industry consolidation, music gradually became just another commodity to profit from.
mrbag60 1 year ago
@mrbag60 yeah and "pregressive/free-form" FM stations became "Corporate Radio" stations. Today, everywhere i tune up and down FM frequencies, all they play is the same shit over and over again. Hell, satellite radio is almost as bad or worse with even MORE channels playing the same SHIT over and over again. with a few tiny exceptions with some FEW decent channels.

@cydonianman i have to get on youtube to really listen to what i want.
cydonianman 1 year ago
@cydonianman I remember AM radio in the 60's to the mid-70's was pretty conservative, adhering to a strict 3 minute rule for songs, to make as much money as possible, but then at least it seemed the DJ's had distinct personalities and their was a higher ratio of memorable musical nuggets amongst the superficial crap to keep me interested at that time. Now the new music is so boring and squeezed dry of any spontaneity that its painful to listen to, while classic rock radio is on life support.

@mrbag60 I know exactly what you mean (Maroon 5 is so bland, they make styrofoam spicy)

@mrbag60 yeah, its all about money. forget the art.

Is this song on any of there albums???
TheBobvela 1 year ago
@TheBobvela It is on the Leslie West "Mountain" Album, whcih came out before the band formed. This song is a studio version and lacks the energy of the live version here.
motorcityquig 1 year ago
@motorcityquig It sure does lack the live version. I actually have this album and I didn't even make the connection. They must have practiced a lot between the time they recorded it and this.
TheBobvela 1 year ago
@TheBobvela VINTAGE LESLIE WEST. The studio album was always designed only to lay down the songs as written and crafted. If you listen closely to any Mountain song that isnt live, its designed for radio play. However, its the CONCERT that awoke the Beast, which is Mountain. When he was ON, no one could light a stage up like Leslie West. The greatest guitar tone in the world. He's itting of the name lovingly given by fans, "The King of Tone."

@ggchokee1 Dude you have NO IDEA who Leslie West is. Go back to your Madonna videos.

Although I like all of their material, I believe this selection is better than everything else that has been released of their Woodstock appearance. By the way, was "Mississippi Queen" released AFTER the Woodstock Festival?
kcolpaer 1 year ago
@kcolpaer after. recorded for "Climbing" w Corky Laing on drums.

@kcolpaer Mississippi Queen was after. Actually Mountain had only been a group for a week at the woodstock festival. This was their 4th gig as a band.

my favourite band of all time, i was really into hendrix a while ago but i cannot stop listening to mountain stuff now, leslie's solo album from 69, climbing, nantucket sleighride, fillmore east all these albums, they're aewsome, too bad he's so underated and not recognized, Leslie West is God, pioneer of pinch harmonics
