What about Baba O'Riley by The Who,, The Sweet's 'Teenage Rampage', or 'Teen Age Riot' by Sonic Youth? Dawson's Creek didn't exist until years after any of those songs were released, and they're all classics from multi-platinum albums.

What you said makes no sense. R.E.M. still produces some of the best alternative music in the genre's history. Their lyrics will always be cohesive and meaningful.
