  • Fantastic performance of a very complicated character.

  • Good reenactment of his speech -- but the "Nixon's the One" poster was from his '68 run -- NOT '62.

  • AROOOOOOOOO!

  • They shoulda just used Dan Hedaya for Nixon. HE WAS RIGHT FUCKIN' THERE, STONE. Oh well, at least someone realized the error and made "Dick".

  • @abvflux Nice picture of a boat. How would you girls like to be my "Secret Youth Advisor?." Get out of here you stinking little idiots!

  • i can still hear an english accent under there for sure.

  • From the real footage I've seen of Nixon, he doesn't really stumble or look nervous during his speeches.

  • @maxpowers518

It seems exaggerated. Nixon wasn't that bad compared to how the movie portrayed him.

  • @HKK91 I dunno. Nixon's statement constituted one of the worst public meltdowns by an American political figure up to that time. I think this scene is designed to convey to today's viewers just how shocking this moment was to the nation.

  • The crooked Liberal Media is THE EXACT worst thing that ever happened to this country.

  • I love Oliver Stone's version of history. If you look at actual footage of this speech, Nixon is blunt, but steady, and not a sweaty, scary mess. The actual speech was even kind of bland, but here, its downright chilling, and absurd, and prophetic, thanks to Hopkin's, the music, and the frenetic editing.

  • hopkins would of played a better reagan then nixon. he looks nothing like nixon at all.

  • It's not all about him looking like NIxon, it's the way he speaks and his mannerisms that he uses.

  • I'm not so sure. Say what you want about Ronald Reagan, the man

practically oozed self-confidence. Nixon, on the other hand, looked

like a man who would break down any minute under the weight of

his insecurities. Hopkin's performance captures this very well.

  • This is the wrong intonation for this speec. The real Nixon rattled through some Republican victories from the previous night and then proceeded to deliver his grievances with the press in an excoriating, but measured manner. As a PBS American Experience documentary on Nixon put it, "he entered the ballroom with one last score to settle with the press."

  • There are two things that really bother me about this film: Anthony Hopkins' performance and the overbearing score. Both are on display here.

  • nixon's 1962 farewell speech in real life was much more dramatic than what oliver "hack" stone has come up with.

  • Agreed. Nixon displayed much more emotion than this replication of the speech.

  • I watched the film "W" and thought it would be very anti-Bush, but I thought Stone was very sympathetic in his portrayal. So much so that I actually walked out of the movie theater with a little more admiration for George W. Bush (and I'm a Democrat).

So I don't know what you Bush-lovers are complaining about.

  • Any Movie made whereby a Republican is shown is ALWAYS done in a light most favorable to the agenda and humor of the peoples republic of California...how bout a movie about that Dim Wit jimmy carter or lyndon B johnson ...or perhaps barney frank....or maybe a drug pedeling Rabbi or a fanatical pimp muslim cleric.

  • So you believe that the movie "W" was anti-Bush? I think you should explan yourself. I found it to be (if anything) very sympathetic in its portrayal of Bush.

  • Exactly. Republicans were actually pleased with the movie while liberals were tremendously disappointed because Stone treated Bush with kid gloves. Quite frankly, I really didn't understand it neither.

  • The ironic part is, the conservatives were lashing out at the film before it even hit theaters. Same exact thing they did with Fahrenheit 9/11. They were labeling it as liberal propaganda and none of them had even seen the film.

  • @sean2015 Like many of Stone's films about Republican political figures, it

sympathized with him on a personal level but condemned his political

    decisions.

  • @kwg2000 Republicans always whine that the media is against them, yeah right like the media ignored the entire Monica Lewinsky scandal, and they completely ignored the scandal with John Edwards' mistress.

    Grow up Republicans.

  • @sean2015

I dont recall the media demanding Clinton resign. I dont recall the media calling for anyone elses head. They forced out alot of Bushes people. God forbid us "racist" Republicans attack Obama though.

  • @HalfBornUnicornFetus It's not the media's job to "demand" that an elected official resign, but since you brought up the subject, look at Weiner. Not only did most Democrats call for his resignation, Pelosi actually called for an ethics investigation.

God forbid those "America-hating, military-hating" Democrats dared to question the Iraq War. That would be considered treasonous and unpatriotic.

  • @sean2015

Ill agree with you on the last sentence. Thats the reason most Ron Paul (and his supporters, which includes me) are characterized as Liberal...were the most far right in the GOP!!

  • @HalfBornUnicornFetus The difference between the two parties is that Democrats (like me) aren't afraid to call out one of their own on a scandal, whereas Republicans stonewall and whine that they were set up. It's hard to confess to a lie or a sin when you and your party base your entire theme on morality and family values because you know how hypocritical you'll look if you're caught.

  • @luvumba

You want to see LBJ being lampooned, try watching "The Right Stuff". It shows him explaining to a female reporter that 'the Russians want our peckers in their pockets'. Then throwing a temper tantrum because John Glenn's wife won't speak to him. Hilarious!

  • Have you ever seen one of those actors who did so good in one role that you can't really visualize them in anything else? Thats how I feel about Hopkins. I don't see this as Hpkins playing Nixon, I see it as Hannibal Lector playing Nixon. Hes still an amazing actor though.

  • Thanks so much for putting this scene up! I love this film!!!

    ALL HAIL OLIVER STONE!!!

  • He's right..the media sucks; then and now.

  • his impresion here is really incredible. however, it seems a little over the top with the sweating and some of the crowd reaction. i think video of the real press conference would prove that. ti doesnt, however, capture what must have been the tension and resentment that nixon felt

  • yeah, Stone sometimes treats the audience like dopes.

What I love about Hopkins' Nixon (as opposed to Langella's) is the big, nervous smile...that mask that Nixon always threw on when he was really angry.

  • Sir Hopkins did a excellent job on this movie portraying Nixon. This movie is one of my favorite political movies.

  • he speacese like him and hi play lik him great

  • I think it's so near sighted to critisize this amazing performance by Hopkins on the basis of whether or not he looks or sounds like Nixon. If you want to see an impression go check Rich Little's work.

  • this is nixon in 62 not 72. this is how he had his hair. plus its anthony hopkins, he wasnt hired for his physical to resemblance to nixon, he's a brilliant actor.

  • This movie is so brilliant. I think it's one of the classics of our time. Stone made Nixon a tragic figure, which only a great filmmaker could do.

  • I honestly don't think Anthony Hopkins looks a thing like the real life Richard Nixon.

  • he does very well towards the end of the movie... George C. Scott did the intro speech in Patton as the last shot because George C. Scott knew that he would have a better grasp of Patton after filming it for a while. Stone should have shot the scenes out of order

  • George C. Scott looked nothing like Gen. George S. Patton, and Karl Maulden certainly looked nothing like General Bradley.

No actor could really look like Richard Nixon; I do believe that Sir Anthony Hopkins did capture the essence of the legend, as did George C. Scott and Karl Maulden.

  • @Outlaw1257 Gregory Itzin from 24 looks like Nixon

  • @Outlaw1257 i couldn't agree with you more Hopkins i think did the best performance of Nixon ever because he is really the only one who didn't do just a straight impression of the man but like you said captured his essence which no other actor has done. Frank Langella came close but you can't beat Hopkins.

  • @MikeMJPMUNCH Sir Anthony Hopkins is a method actor, as well as a highly accomplished stage actor. Although there are many who disagree with me, Frank Langella did a fair job of capturing Nixon, his performance was not nearly as riveting as the one given by Hopkins.

  • True, but I can't think of any other actor who looks more like Nixon than Hopkins. In other words, Hopkins doesn't look much like Nixon, but he looks more like him than any other actor I can think of, with his sagging jowls and hairline and, above all, gruff sort of voice.

  • Correct. It's not about his make up job, it's about his ACTING job, which was phenomenal.

  • Really? I think he looks a lot like with and does the some stuff Nixon did when he spoke. I love this scene. It's good to hear someone call out the media on all their spin and biased bull shit.

  • Soon we wont have Bush to kick around anymore ...poor Bush.

  • Wow another Repug Patriot, where you been for the last 7 years as Bush has driving America into the ground?

  • Maybe Stone should do a movie about the Obama Hillary race for the Democrat Nomination now that would be a good film also.

  • Cos Stone likes to regard himself as the biopic great of our era,he prolly needs the money for coke again.

  • Hey instead of whining about Stone why dont you get a camera and produce a movie you can do it on say your hero Dick Cheney or maybe Rumsfeld?

  • I'm far from left wing, but I thought this film was an honest portrayal of a complex man. I think "hubris" wasn't so much correct as it was "troubled". I think as brilliant as he was in certain areas, he was a deeply troubled man

  • Bush is a far less interesting character than Nixon.

  • left wing media? left wing propaganda? nixon was a republican. read your history gentlemen. nixon did more for the 2nd half of the 20th century than any other leader. yes he had his vices and insecurities, but he was a great man nonetheless, and served as a brilliant advisor to carter, reagan, bush and clinton.

  • NO, this was the TRUTH.

I was expecting Satan to step out of the shadows and advise his boy "Tricky Dick" not unlike "Slick Willie" Clinton of another day.

The arrogance, the hubris of Richard Nixon... nearly destroyed our country.

  • You need to study Nixon.

  • stone exaggerates everything in all his movies

  • how right he was, and how exagerrated Stone made Nixon to be, look at the real film he is not sweating at all, typical leftwing horseshit from a drunken director of left wing propaganda...

  • stop blaming the media and pick yourself up by your bootstraps sonnyboy

  • the only bootstraps you will see is the ones I will strangle you with after I make you toss my salad, mind your own fucking business left wing bitch...

  • Thanks for reminding me why we can't have nice things, YouTube.

  • you stop being a crybaby

  • My favorite movie

  • I love this scene!
