This movie seems kind of sad from what I've seen and heard. I have not watched the whole movie but this clip hardly represents the real Charles Manson we can see in the videos from back then except for a few quotes. I'd say the 2004 version is better.
I know what Manson is saying. The difference between me and Manson is that he preaches love, I don't know how to love, I only know hate. I have no concept of love. Also Manson is a spiritual person, I am Athiest.
Great Performance by Steve Railsback..of this Monster who dares to call himself a 'Human Being'..Just another monster with a lot of sick sheep following him..I was horrified when this happened, how could anyone with half a heart do what he and his 'sheep'(followers) did..??..I can never get my head around this type of monster, and there have been many..Sickening..Those females singing at the Courthouse was chilling..It's easy to be evil, being good is harder in this world..but I'll take good..
My opinion would be that the actor didn't really know the meaning of the words he was supposed to say (such as "but I'm only what lives in each and every one of you" (meaning the energy of The Universe)), and I also bet that he was said to play Manson in a way that was to show how crazy he was, which is quite the mistake to make... You just have to understand the meaning behind the words, then you would understand the meaning behind the actions of his, and then you can play the role well. IMHO
@Xgoes8 Oh but I didn't say it was so. It just fits perfectly, that's all... Well, not really... Manson said those things himself. (that we are all god, and everything else is too - we are all one)
It's too bad this movie was horribly fictionalized; fake names, fake characters, etc. This monologue, while Manson's real words, is abridged to the point where the meaning of his words are lost and misunderstood.
Steve Railsback he played the roll of Charles Manson to a T.Steve Railsback tried to talk to Charles Manson but later left San Quentin because according to Steve the way Manson spoke to him made his skin crawl.
This role really screwed Railsback for a long time because nobody wanted to hire Charles Manson to be in their movie. Same thing happened to Andy Robinson who played Scorpio in Dirty Harry. It's amazing what happens where you're too good.
It's too bad that this may be Manson's testimony words, but all out of order and out of context. For instance the "too deaf, dumb, blind" part was said like 30 minutes before he talks about "I hear what it relates..." and that was in context of music telling kids to "rise" and "kill". Funny how movies mess everything up.
@dk5388 Uh, what is it you don't understand? There are two parts to his speech. First he talks about how they want to sentence him to death. He says that's ironic because they made him. His father was a jailhouse, etc. Then he talks about the idea that he brainwashed his followers. He says that you don't get it, these children are rebelling because of how they were raised. Charlie had nothing to do with it.
There are few roles I've ever seen on film that match Railsback's performance as Manson in this movie. From the mannerisms to the voice to the eyes...all spot on. Just a riveting and haunting performance. Unfortunately Railsback became a victim of typecasting after this
The radio station KEXP uses the bit starting "Is that a conspiracy"? at 2:48 through "The music speaks to you every day but you're too deaf, dumb and blind to listen!" at 3:03, in a station ID. It's followed by "KEXP—Seattle" spoken in a very mopey emo voice.
They remade this film a few years back and though the production values were higher, the actor who played Manson paled in comparison to Steve Railsback. He captured the character so well that many people who think they saw authentic Charles Manson court footage were actually the film. His performance helped bring national attention to the Manson story to add mythology to the crimes.
Manson, while brilliant, misdirected his disdain for society. He could have used that mind to change things for the better instead of exploiting naive kids who were searching for something missing in their lives.
Too bad they don't give academy awards for TV movies, this performance by Steven Railsback was one of the most superb I've ever seen. What happened to him?
Yeah Railsback studied Manson's speaking voice and nailed it, perfectly caught the hint of country accent manson has. the recent remake of helter Skelter sucked, the guy wo played Manson just talked in a low gravely voice and didn't sound anything like manson. Railsback is a great actor.
I thought this version was better. But, I thought Jeremy Davies nailed Manson in the newer version. This guy was good too, but he didn't have the advantage of seeing all the Manson footage that Davies did.
manson epitomized bleeding-heart liberalism and scapegoating. waa, waa, waa. can you say giant chip on the shoulder, boys and girls? accountability to self, maybe you've heard of that, charlie. railsback really rocked this.
Exactly! That same disappointment Manson had for the ills of society could have been turned into something positive, but he chose to use it in a negative fashion. One of the worst scapegoaters ever.
Is this what manson really said?

He played Manson great, but Manson had a real deep voice, this guy kinda has a squeaky voice, just saying.

Now THIS is an actor and a performance beyond reproach. Steve Railsback should have won at least an Emmy for this performance.

I don't know if there's any acting that really gets better than this. Strasberg must've been soooooo proud of this performance.
