. . . . can we have the words, please, somebody?? I love this song, reminds me of my Maori/pakeha friends I worked with here in the UK in the 70s. The poms love it too !!
E kore te aroha e maroke i te rā, Mākūkū tonu i aku roimata e. They are agitated the waters of Waiapu, But when you cross over girl they will be calm. Oh girl return to me, I could die of love for you. I have written my letter I have sent my ring, so that your people can see that I am troubled. My pen is shattered, I have no more paper But my love is still steadfast. My love will never be dried by the sun, It will be forever moistened by my tears.
you really shouldn't try to make a 4/4 time poncy operetta out of a 3/4 time people's song, this rendition is bloody atrocious and arguably the least authentic I've ever heard, not to mention she completely took the popularist route and only sung half the flippin verses grrrrr
the song is a love song written in the NZ Maori laguage...That was originally composed in a letter of a Maori solider during World War One,,,,sent to the woman in New Zealand whom later would become his wife, after the war (the song was later published in 1928)
Oh god you don't know anything about maori music do you? Hailey westernra ruins the song!!! how dare you say this about dame Kiri!!! I am maori myself, and originaly this song was sung almost operaticaly. Kiri is the finest singer to have ever come out of New Zealand and if you prefer the rubbish and insulting squeeks and squeels of popoera singers like westernra, then there is something seriousley wrong with you all.

Kiri makes a mess out of this. It is a folk song, but she sings it like an opera aria. Notice how she is reading from a teleprompter as she sings - she doesn't know the most famous song of her own heritage.
For a beautiful, authentic Maori rendition of the song see Marie Te Hapuku here on uTube. I guarantee you'll never listen to this colourless performance again...
@neilmak I know what you mean... but she is trying to make it international .... so, the only way everyone in the world can love the song, would be in opera way, cause opera is an international style... I am sure she wouldnt never disrespected it... I think she wants to reach more people to know this song, like she did to me... man I am brazilian, I never heard this song before and I love it now :-)
I might sing it on my opera contest, cause it is beautiful
It would have been nice if she had worn what the other Maori women were wearing to show her pride, and come down a note or two as opera isnt how Maori songs were meant to be sung, love the Maori choir though.
She does look little bit stern, doesn't she? But I would say it is because she is actually moved - so she is trying not to show too much emotions. Dame Kiri once said that this song, whic she sings only on very special occasions, deeply touches her heart. Anyways, the performance is brilliant!
That is certainly a possibility. Obviously I don't know the woman personally, so I couldn't say. But to me, the performance is just too stiff. To each their own, of course. Cheers...
Sorry But Kiri is a Maori and originates from Gisborne where this was filmed. I lived there for 7 years until I moved down to Dunedin. It is one of the most unspoiled parts of New Zealand there is

yes boss, I'll sing whatever you want boss. I don't want to go in the corn fields boss.... even though you might not want to hear our songs that is older that the bible or the Koran.. we're just polynesian cotton pickers boss... we don't know anything else boss... can i go to the toilet boss????
I'm the same, I'm not a fan of Opera but Kiri... She's awesome and yes, I was there, I was stuuuuuuuuffed after that Concert was finished, went back to the Whare, slept then woke for the mean feed with all the Whanau - Was the day!
It was a great concert - Went to the clock 1st - and around 2am we went down to the concert with all whanau and children too! Sat in the rain until Kiri came on - I was drinking so I didn't mind haha And amazing when everyone went on the beach to watch the waka - Heapsss of peeps! Awesome night

Is it just me, or does she seem to be bored up there... not enjoying it or something?

Unearthly, superb, professional, focused, moving, utterly involved, patriotic, divine. Kaileo, your post is unfortunate.
AinslieRiddell 2 years ago
As is your unfortunate review, Ainslie.
Were you really paying attention, or are you simply uninformed when it comes to reading body language? Not one smile, when this is a love song!
Not to mention a completely colorless, boring vocal performance... from a woman who disparages her own people, and rarely spends time in NZ.
A great voice, yet a poor performance.

Sorry, I think Hayley Westenra sings this one better!
I liked the start until Kiri came in.
Don't get me wrong she has a great and powerful voice!
I just think she over powers this one a wee bit.

I agree. Sorry but white people think they can sing traditional folk music better than the locals.. Please, she just ruins it.
