I read a little further into the bill. In Section 1032 it states that this military detainment is not applicable to citizens of the United States nor legal alien citizens. I guess I'm missing the proper section. Could somebody tell me where to look?

Section 1031 of Bill Calendar No. 230 states that the military will have authority to detain "covered" persons. "Covered" persons are referred to as persons determined to have taken part in the 9/11 attacks, or anyone determined to be involved with Al Qaida or related groups. I can understand David's scenario of an Occupier being detained, but, from what I've found, the bill refers to being involved with Al Qaida. I just wonder what is meant by "determined". Interesting indeed....

Specifically the part where it talks about USA is considered a battlefield in terms of the war on terror and that although the military doesn't have to arrest/detain/imprison civilians, they are authorized to do so/if they so desire. "Doesn't have to" doesn't mean "can not."
I'm against the act, but they're not going to use it to arrest Occupy protestors. They can only arrest you under the act when suspected of being associated with the Taliban or Al Qaeda, which is already the case anyway.
The president is against this because it doesn't give him enough powers;

Section 1031 of Bill Calendar No. 230 states that the military will have authority to detain "covered" persons. "Covered" persons are referred to as persons determined to have taken part in the 9/11 attacks, or anyone determined to be involved with Al Qaida or related groups. I can understand David's scenario of an Occupier being detained, but, from what I've found, the bill refers to being involved with Al Qaida. I just wonder what is meant by "determined". Interesting indeed....

(f) Extension to United States Citizens and Lawful Resident Aliens.--The authority of the Armed Forces of the United States to detain covered persons under this section extends to citizens of the United States and lawful resident aliens of the United States, except to the extent prohibited by the Constitution of the United States."

SEC. 1031. DEFINITION OF INDIVIDUAL DETAINED AT GUANTANAMO.
In this subtitle, the term ‘individual detained at Guantanamo’ means any individual who is located at United States Naval Station, Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, on or after March 7, 2011, who--
(1) is not a citizen of the United States or a member of the Armed Forces of the United States; and
(2) is in the custody or under the effective control of the Department of Defense.
I don't see a police state here...

You are looking at the House version of the bill: HR 1540. The amendment has been defeated, and is no longer a problem, however disturbing it is that such a thing was contemplated. The amendment in question was Amendment. No. 1107 to the bill: S. 1867. Both versions were named the "National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012" See my other post for the correct text

@hehfilms 1031 and 1032.... Specifically the part where it talks about USA is considered a battlefield in terms of the war on terror and that although the military doesn't have to arrest/detain/imprison civilians, they are authorized to do so/if they so desire. "Doesn't have to" doesn't mean "can not."

I'm against the act, but they're not going to use it to arrest Occupy protestors. They can only arrest you under the act when suspected of being associated with the Taliban or Al Qaeda, which is already the case anyway.

I am beginning to think that this bill is politics. The GOP gets to look "tough on terror" and the president gets to magnanimously protect the people from the "evil overbearing Republicans" by "turning away from the temptation of too much power", popularity gets lifted out of Carter-junk status, reelection.....
