Yes, the gas tax is going to rise by 8.5 cents phased in during 6 years. People must realize spending money on the gas tax, which is 100% dedicated for roads and bridges, is not like spending money on health care or education. Unlike those programs where we can dump hundreds of millions in and see little to no results, in transportation how much we pay for is how much we get out of it. This bill was needed and I for one after looking at the facts am glad it passed.
People are sick of bonding. Where is the republican party that I knew that cut instead of issuing more bonds? MNDOT pays over 50 million a year in interest from the last Pawlenty-Molneau funding package. At least this gas tax increase pays off that interest and pays for bridges like the Desoto, Hastings, Lafayette, etc. Also blaming the democrats for the over 40 cent rise in gas prices since the bill has been passed is hilarious since the gas tax has only gone up by 2 cents.
I use to be proud of the republican party but this is pathetic. The DFL did not raise taxes to solve the budget deficit. When is the republican party going to come up with solutions instead of just complaining. Did you read the legislative auditor's report on transportation? By 2012 all of the current money MNDOT spends will have to go towards preservation only. MNDOT has a funding crisis and all the republicans did is come up with a bill for more bonding.
$0.08 per gallon??? big deal??? Gas prices are over $3.50?? The majority of that money going to BP and Shell or worse yet, the middle east, none to help fix our roads/bridges. The last gas tax increase??? 1987!!! Gas has gone up over 400% since then. Why don't they just tax gas by percent of the sale and not by the gallon?? It's easier for the oil companies and their lackeys in the government to trick you into thinking $0.08 is a big deal. Figure it out pal!
Thank you to anyone involved in making this ad. Minnesota has really become an expensive place to live and I am pretty furious that they steamrolled this tax increase when we are already overtaxed. I guess they were upset about slipping to the 7th highest taxed state in the country and are now fighting for 3rd or 4th.

Stop DFL!
DFL to English translation:
QUOTE:
Democrat Speaker of the House - "We are a very fiscally moderate caucus."
Translation:
"We are going to raise your taxes"
