Of all these soap opera people, I'd like to see Verity happy at the end of this. Too bad she and her Captain couldn't end up together. That mess wasn't his fault. / All of a sudden she loves him again? This time period is wonderfully done in, "Garrow's Law." A series here on You Tube. / As I've said men owned their wives. Had she left he could have had her returned and she certainly wouldn't have gotten the children.
This deviates a lot from the books. And Elizabeth considering leaving Francis and moving with Ross is simply imbecilic. It wasn't done in that time. When you were married you were stuck. If you left you went to your family, and only if there was a lot of physical abuse. Moving in with another man was unthinkable. Francis would have had to shoot Ross at the very least.
@xhagast You are absolutely right, especially with people of this social level but in the early 18th century the notorious Jonathan Wild did leave his wife & son & lived with another married woman who had sneaked away from her husband & then wild & {Mrs} Milliner,{for that was her name} lived as man & wife & i am sure there were other such cases also.
@Poldark3 True, anything could happen no matter the times and customs but it was extremely rare and an absolute scandal. They present it here in too casual a way. Verity running away to get married, however, was more in character with the times. This was a good series but they weirdly deviated from the books. Unnecessarily, too.

@Poldark3 Yep that's why is was Man and Wife, not Husband and Wife. You might of well have said Man and Property, it basically meant the same thing.

Ephemeral, certainly. Why does misery appear so long lasting ?
