Wow, Freddie's disclaimer before the tune, a quasi- apologetic tone and then...'screw you critics, dig this..." What a heavy funk version, much more ballsy than the studio cut, good for them.
@TheMarlinspike John play acoustic on a couple of Queen songs. I wonder if there is any live footage of Mr. Deacon palying acoustic guitar with Queen? Did they do You And I live?
@JIF882 Yeah I knew he played quite a lot of guitar on the album tracks but had never seen him on one live. I don't think You and I was ever played live (might be wrong) - Who needs you was another one he plays on, but again don't think it was played live.
A song about remaining in a very active relationship for a long time, Staying Power is a great jazzy / disco song. The horns are amazing and give it one heck of a brassy sound. It gets your blood pumping and really lifts your spirits. One of my favorites off the Hot Space album. There could also be a sexual reference to the phrase, staying power.;)
@jackie88jj don't say leader of the band to Freddie he always said I'm the lead singer not leader and hated when peoplesaid that to him. They all got 25% each there was no boss.
its funny how when i loved them when i was younger i hated the hot space album. nowerdays after ive listened to so much more music like prince and orchestral music and so on ive come to really appreciate not only queen more but even their songs that are just so different to their usual styles
it´s ver dificult too understand for some that brian is the leader of the band looking that freddie is the singer, moving with all that energy on the stage.
I like Hot Space, and I think it would have been better received if it didn't catch audiences off-guard with it's different sound. It was just an unexpected follow-up to the success that "the Game" brought.
And there is no bass guitar on this LIVE version they performed!!!!!!
John Deacon is playing a black Fender Telecaster guitar!.(not a bass!).
Interesting! So they did the dual guitar thing...Deacon and Brian...with Deacon having a slightly fuzzed out guitar tone and playing in the lower guitar register
through most of the tune....kinding of getting a bass-ish tone but with that edge and picking clarity and speed of a telecaster! Very nice!
Though I've had this exact concert footage on video since 1987 from the 3 video
Queen retrospective set which was released that year, I haven't viewed this particular song for some time and I have to say it's fucking HOT. What a tight performance by all four of them. Great musicians playing perfectly together in a very fast paced funky composition..pulling off great vocal harmonies too.
Freddie is just, well, he's Freddie! He is THE best! The most charismatic. talented rock/pop singer ever.
@jackie88jj Yes Michimoni is right Freddie hated it when people said he was the leader of Queen. Freddie said I'm the lead singer and all 4 of us are equal.
Interesting that Freddie felt the need to offer that almost apologetic disclaimer at the beginning - I thought the song sounded great live; they were working hard!
The studio versions of the songs on Hot Space still sound good but Staying Power and Back Chat sound amazing live. Much much better. Freddie is such an expressive person!, incredible energy and so much emotion!! and his singing is out of this world. What an amzing man he was!!!
@dockaiser Are you out of your mind? The best times in terms of musicianship? Yeah right, still a good record, but don't dare say that. And what about Innuendo? That's my 3rd favourite Queen album behind Opera and II.
I love that Freddie is like "It's only a bloody record..." to all the people who get so fucking worked up just because they wanted to venture to other genre's of music for a few songs. These guys invented genre's with all their experimentation and seeing them wonder over to a funk sound is cool. What I'm trying to say is, this song is fantastic =) and a great performance, thanks for posting!
WOW! never saw this! One of my favourite songs from Queen played live. Thank U Michimoni for sharing. Heaven keep freddie safe forever !!. God save the Queen.
Hot Space is my fav too. I think the game would be second. I liked how they started incorperating synths into their sound. I feel that a lot of 70's rock bands tried to incorporate synths into their music and were not always successful. I feel that Queen and Rush were 2 rock bands from the 70's that did a good job of it.
lol.. he's gay.. died of aids.. that's why no one can ever beat him.. they can't swallow their pride, but he's gay he has no pride to swallow, he'll kill us all with his awesomeness!
my favorite live song from Hot Space Tour is Body Language it sounds so great love the way Roger screams I want ur body...this stayin power sounds great as well
This sounds sooooooooooooo much better live - the studio version is disco-influenced electronic funk, but with the electronic drums replaced with acoustics and played at a faster tempo it turns into funk rock - perfect for a person like me who firmly believes in classic rock heaviness but also has a nightclub side!!!!!!!!

Definitely two of the best rock singers of all time, Freddie Mercury and Steve Perry. (Sorry, I was listening to the Infinity album earlier, SP is also a god)
For live performences this is the best Queen era, The Gluttons For Punishment and Hot Space tour's: For the first time Freddie looks realy comfortable in his own skin on stage.
Personaly, unlike most of the rest of you, I adore this and in my PERSONAL opinion i'd rather listen to this than Bohemian Rhapsody...Now, I wonder if anyone knows any group from this era (or any era) that makes similar music...I would very much appriciate every tip I can get!
That's right. Freddie used a white Telecaster on Crazy Little Thing Called Love on the Works and Magic tours. Brian would start the song with an Ovation 12 string, switches to a Telecaster during the second verse, then after the guitar solo, would switch over to the Red Special for end of the song.
And yeah, John (and Roger, for that matter) played a fair bit of guitar on the albums. John played the rhythm guitar on Back Chat, and yeah, most of the guitars on Misfire, as well.
John Deacon playing the 'clean' guitar licks/riffs/chords, I was wondering who played those...fabulously done Deacon John ;-). Now I am wondering who is/are playing the trumpets :-).
This is great too! just like Back Chat from Live at the Bowl! Queen has staying power! So Rock me rock me rock me!! They're just a regular dynamo!! What energy-sure don't see that in other groups concerts even today!

Shocked by how good this is live. It was probably the best song on the album other than Under Pressure, but it's shockingly good here, they really rock it out and do a strong translation.
Incredible version... meatier and crunchier than the original version (which I equally love!). One hell of a song and a living proof of Queen´s musical diversity. ROCK ON!
It's only a bloody record, love that comment he's right there but its not really queens strength but this is actually a ton better than the recorded version

Incredible version... meatier and crunchier than the original version (which I equally love!). One hell of a song and a living proof of Queen´s musical diversity. ROCK ON!

It's only a bloody record, love that comment he's right there but its not really queens strength but this is actually a ton better than the recorded version

Lot of people say it's a bad record because it is not rock & roll... so short minded way of thinking.
