  • I do not have access to this acct anymore. I lost my email during a long recovery. Blue is still alive and well at about 13. But he is getting... a tad elderly. I was wrong and have come to find they are not sure how long they live out of the wild. In the wild they are lucky to make it 7 years due to predators and such. Blue had the DNA test and is a boy. For the person who had a wild companion leave. Scrub Jays after so many years may leave their mate for a few months and visit their parents!

  • @TheDeadcowkid I'm glad to hear that Blue is still alive and well. I read your blog about Blue and it was so touching that it brought tears to my eyes. You two have a really special bond. I grew very attached to a scrub jay in an avian cognition center, but that story is too long to tell in a reply to a post. But I'm so glad to see someone else who shares my love for these wonderful birds!

  • They live up to 20 years! But they also mate for life. Its impossible to tell for sure their sex. Only a DNA test will tell for sure. So maybe they were not mates and the missing one found one. I have some wild ones that take peanuts from me, and sometimes they leave for awhile, always returning before winter for NUTS. Good luck and thanks. Ikillion. sorry I have not posted in some time but hope too soon. Blue is still doing well.

  • I have enjoyed your videos and your blog about your adventures with Blue. I lost one of my jays, the one I thought was the female of the pair, Scrubita, left one day never to return. Precocious, her mate, still comes for peanuts and has taken another mate, but I rarely see her. Do you know, on average, how long a scrub jay lives in the wild? I will be so sad when the day comes and Precocious no longer comes for his peanuts. It's been at least six or seven years now.

  • Blue too, he can here the click of the camera being turned on, and that is enough for him to stop singing. But he will come right up and land on me and break into song and dance. Has your companions done that yet? Blue started a about a year old. I wiggled slowly my fingers in front of him, he begins to bob and weave and then goes into a full on wings spread dance, some of the sounds mimic me. Now he just does it.I posted your great pics and Sun trance on the Blog. Thanks Tim

  • Itis funny how they seem to know when they are being taped. My guys hate the flash of the camera and seem to know something is up when I point it at them.
