@seansacco A-theist = without a belief in a personal god. Bill is an atheist. He says he doesn't know, which makes him an atheist. Theism is to confidently believe in a personal, influential god. He isn't sure, so he's an atheist. If he was against the christian/muslim/mormon/jewish god, he'd be an anti-theist. If he was without any belief/consideration of/for a god of any sort, he'd be an adeist.

My point is, he is an atheist. By saying he doesn't know, he's claiming to be one. No problem

@seansacco Thats called being agnostic, its a stance on knowledge. Atheism and theism are stances on belief. Atheism isn't a stance on knowledge, its a stance on not believing. Most atheists are rational enough to be agnostic as well. If bill doesn't believe then that makes him an atheist, regardless of whether its a title he chooses to actually use.
