The trans is a Saganaw 4-spd. with the Crown input shaft. I am always happy to check out
V-8 conversions as there are are no two alike. It is interesting to see different solutions to the same problems...there are lots of right answers. My e-mail address is paulsiano@yahoo.com.
Nice! Had a 68 Crown Conversion Corvair back in the day. I don't think you mentioned the transmission. Is it a Saginaw 4-spd? I had to replace the main shaft in my Saginaw because I kept snapping it in two with a solid main shaft. Would like to email you a picture of my Crown V8 Corvair if you are interested.
WOW!!! Thats all I can say! That is one mean Corvair! I didnt know GM even made a 283 aluminum block.....Beautiful...and so is the sweet symphony of the engine revving up through the powerband....What a treat! I love youtube
It is the original Corvair four speed which has been modified with a different input shaft. The differential is also the original Corvair modified with two additional spider gears to take the extra torque.
I am guessing that GM engineering (Zora Duntov?) wanted to explore the possibility of Corvettes with aluminum engines (Corvette Grand Sports had them.) Some blocks were cast by GM / ALCOA...unsure about the number. When finished with the engineering effort they were scrapped as was the custom of the day. I have approached the Corvette museum and the GM museum. Both would like to have it but have no money and I can't afford to donate it...so it remains in my Corvair.
Beautiful car. I agree, GM could have done great things with the Corvair. I saw a Corvair prototype at the N.Y. Worlds Fair at the GM Pavillion that was fabulous. After the Nader lawsuits, GM seemed to write off the car. Ditto the Fiero, which GM finally got right the last year it was made, and then dumped it.
Thanks for your positive comments. We are having fun with the whole thing and plan to do one more video that will include a couple of maxed out 0 to 130 mph runs and some shots taken from the rear overlooking the engine and through the windshield while accelerating as hard as it will go. The youtube video will be uploaded before the article about it in the December issue of "Automobile" magazine hits the stands.
OMG! that is without a doubt the sweetest sounding 283 in the universe! if ever a sound could raise testosterone levels, it's your vair...now please don't delay- make another video w/ more engine sounds~
Sometimes it's hot, sometimes it's very hot, but it''s always loud.

Even though a fire wall makes a lot of sense, I just can't bring myself to build an engine cover. I do wear ear protection some of the time.
I suffer for my art...

Thanks for the kind words.
The 283 aluminum block is one of several cast for GM's CERV-1 project and was ordered by Zora Duntov and/or Ed Cole.

Thanks, It was worth the effort. If a car show has a catagory for "least practical" it's a contender...but I like it.

Nice job. That made a clean little Hot Rod.

Isn't it kind of dangerous to be right next to the engine like that without any shielding?

@luvscats69 Thanks, most car guys seem to like it, normal people don't get it at all...I'd say you are a car guy.

High praise indeed from one who is so involved with and knowledgeable about cars. We share the same "car guy" gene. Enjoyed your video.

Sweet! That thing sounds like a Can-Am car. Speaking of which, a buddy of mine is thinking of making one of these into a Chaparral 2J look-alike.

This is how i like to see old cars customized.
Still looks vintage, but with a little modern flair. Kinda like the GT500E
