It is said that Lao Tzu was an enlightened man, who lived appox 500 to 600 BC,
the same period of Gautama Buddha in India. And that LTzu was preparing Chinese people to welcome Buddhism into China. It could be via celestial power that LaoTzu heard the Buddha's teaching of Impermance, No-Self, Suffering, Emptiness of thingsm dualism, clinging to 5 senses.. and the Noble-Eightfold-Path so He wrote down into verses. It is said that He wanted to go to Himalaya (perhaps to meet the Buddha? )
i saw a documentary called dragons of wudang. there was this old man who believed he could be immortal by practicing his kung fu and meditating. is this is specifically taught in lao tzu original teachings?
@keeyk118b In ancient Daoist alchemy you could achieve immortality, and you could greatly prolong life throuh aligning yourself with the Way, Lao Tzu was said to live for over 900 years, along with many Daoist practioneers. So the answer is yes.
Greetings, AnnakaRae. May I ask what reference you used regarding the period Lao Tzu lived? By tradition the Master's time in history was between 6th–4th centuries BC. 2500 years places the Master 500 (approx) years after the birth of Christ. I would like to review your sources.

@BirthofAPrince I think it should be the first book any child reads. Taoist philosophy is a threat to most because it is unthreatening, but, very empowering. It sets us free from fear, greed, envy and all of the other negative aspects. If children were taught that God is not a threatening deity, but, that God is the loving way that allows all things to be, we would not fear so much.
you don't need to become a taoist, the tao naturally resides within you. check out bruce frantzis and mantak chia for some good practices to help you realise this.
Hi Princegodstar.. Also great is Stephen Russel aka Barefoot Doctor. He has a brilliant way of guiding one through Taoist exercises and philosophy and he has ceated a system that makes it very easy to follow whilst remainig very powerful. Books like The return of the urban warrior is an excellent starter. But if you want to delve right in the Mantak and Maneewan Chia do great work also..Peace my friend
a wuwei,..do nothing and let the natural process lead the way! It's the concept that they always mistakenly as a behavior of one as laziness! Ignorance.
So then does Taoism have a clear message on whether or not the pursuit of knowledge is negative or positive? I don't know much about the philosophy but from my observations of Taoist teachings it seems to be pretty firmly against cramming the mind full of new knowledge.
In our society at least, this pretty much guarantees you are going to wind up homeless and on welfare. How exactly would you summarize the 'correct' integration of this aspect of Taoist philosophy into modern society?
@KurtG85 You can quest for whatever knowledge you want. Use it responsibly and for the good of yourself and others. Knowledge from science is a good example to look at. There is knowledge which helps us and at the same time there is knowledge that does us, the planet and conciousness no good at all. Enable yourself to differentiate between the two.
@Kostly Thank you for the reply but I have a somewhat difficult time differentiating between the two. Can you give me an example of knowledge which does us, the planet, and consciousness no good at all? I feel there is very little knowledge which does not serve to benefit the world in some way by way of clarification if nothing else, but I am still open to correction if there is truth I am not considering (truth is knowledge after-all).
@KurtG85 I think you just have to consider the implications of the knowledge and it's effects on those things that I mentioned i.e the planet. For example, I see the majority of the pharmaceutical industry as ultimately harmful. It really isn't about helping people and their ills. It's become about making people rich. They pop out a new pill every 5 minutes. Military buildup is another example. Religious zealotry is a non-science example.
It doesn't necessarily mean "do nothing", it means to do without being conscious of doing - to be "in the zone". We often drive our cars in this fashion, automatically, without thought. It also means, do not force something, to go with the flow in quite a natural way - it's effortless.
I read the Tao Te Ching yesterday, and I must say it was very reaffirming in my notion that human beings are very much lost. May we return to the Tao as soon as possible. For all our sakes.
@fightforyourrights9 Create the world you want through your thought, prayer and wish. When enough people practice this, humanity will follow. When you let it, the Tao will guide us down the righteous path to enlightenment. It will only happen if we ask for it's help. Otherwise you will be on your own.
:) worry not, it happened because it was supposed to, cause all the requirement to this, that is called "disorder" has comed true. There is no other way. Things weren't different, never. I have no wish for this because I see this all true.
The nature of the world, the soul of things, the healthy and the natural which is the base of everything.
Not overdoing, not exhausting, not planning. Let Your soul shine through and You will achieve influence.
Also power is good. See how everything is fair via being cause & consequence objectively. Natural rage is different from chosen aggression. Keep Your natural connection with things!

The best complement to the Tao Te Ching, is "A Modern Yi Jing" for iPhone.
Why the best?
We have attempted to present the characteristic meaning of each hexagram in a way that makes sense to people living in a modern age.
Check out "A Modern Yi Jing" on the appStore

violence is natural, the line between violence and non-violence is made-man. nature cares nothing about this distinction

and man is seperate from nature?
man is nature
NormanSweetcream 3 years ago
well the definition of nature separates man from nature.
1. the material world, esp. as surrounding humankind and existing independently of human activities.
2. the natural world as it exists without human beings or civilization.
3. the elements of the natural world, as mountains, trees, animals, or rivers.
