Britain has talent nobodies.......sit 'em down to watch the best at work then send them away to write a monster 9 minute track.....no chance....this is talent at its best!
Brings me back to my college years ('82-'86) at the University of New Hampshire when I played this album consistently...and, much to my good fortune, met my wife-to-be on a Thursday evening when I was playing "Firth of Fifth" loudly and, at an early hour, when she happened to be passing by my dorm room. The rest, as they say, is history...
@PFforever1 : I was jammin' Seconds Out in England (at a USAF base) during the same timeframe.....early '80's. Always loudly, too!! I've owned this music in cassette, album, c/d and several at that. This album is my most favorite.
All I can say is that when listening to this, life loses all value. I dont care if I die, if I am sick, if I am troubled. Its like nothing can overcome this power. Nothing makes me feel as alive and as eternal as this, not God, not church, not friends not people not love nor hate. As a matter of fact, if any of those things interrupts this musical entity, I face them as pests and rivals of universal goodness.
If you're like me, you've listened to Seconds Out literally thousands of times. And oddly enough, I bet you're not sick of Firth of Fifth, Cinema Show, Supper's Ready, Los Endos either, are you...How is that possible? Because this is the best music in history, it really is. All instruments played to PERFECTION!
@genesis1975 I spent hours, if not days (collectively) analyzing the album jacket, wondering what it must have been like to have been in the audience at this show. Almost 35 years later, I still find myself in a similar mindset. The power of music is without measure...
@genesis1975 I wore out vinyl listening to Seconds Out and was lucky enough to see the tour in Madison, WI. I'll never get sick of this wonderful music.
We are the shepards. We are the Freemen. Sovereign by right. Come, we'll lead you away from babylon. You in your world of incorporated being, shed your chains, see your pains. Come out from under idols hiding as cancer within your minds guiding you to worship things and fictional entities of paper mache rather than he who lives in you and will make you great with power and with clear pathways shall lead you out of the incorporation to human life...
Although that's clearly not dubbed properly - and probably a muted concert with Seconds Out playing over it - it's still f-ing DYNAMITE. What a ridiculously amazing live show. Seconds Out will live FOREVER!
There is nothing flashy about their music, but for some reason when it all comes together, there's this magical and sonic recipe about the music itself. It was far and wide the greatest show that I ever saw, June 18, 1980 at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston, Mass,
Firth of fifth masterpiece. It is never late to know it. Everyone should listen to this 1977 "Seconds Out" wonderful version and also to the 1973 studio original in "Selling England By The Pound" album.
i love the open hi hat from phil while chester plays closed during guitar solo. phils drums sound wicked. they play to good together. phil in right speaker, chester in left. awsome. synched up in the fills. dont get better.....

This is such a great and powerful tune. Listening to it for the 10,000th time I do not tire of it. It packs emotion and spirit, it brings tears to my eyes. This takes me back in time. Will miss these guys.
When those 8 distinctive notes are played in the keyboard & guitar solos, all of a sudden I'm 7 or 8 years old again. Those sound waves reached my ears & ingrained themselves in my memory. Now as an adult, they're a beautiful familiarity of musical sound... they seem ancient, from another life
The first time I ever listened to this song live on Seconds Out, I nearly burst into tears when the crowd erupted in cheers and applause at the end; it was like suddenly being surrounded by thousands of new friends....
Peter Gabriel and Phil Collins are two of the best front men ever and to be from the same band is amazing; to compare them is plain stupid as they are separate entities ! I love them both but still have to say that though this is an amazing album, their best from the old days was THE LAMB LIES DOWN ON BROADWAY, quite possibly one of the ten best rock albums ever produced - PERIOD !!! Give credit where it is due - not just based on what u like. and remember, GENESIS never had an opening act! EVER
In MY opinion, this is the BEST piece of music from the BEST album ever created by ANYONE. The pure talent displayed here is simply amazing. Both the creative song writing, and the raw playing talent by all the members- especially both drummers. Its always a treat to go to the listening room, put this CD in, dim the lights and put yourself center stage. BUT, I believe this was the apogee for Genesis before Collins led them off the cliff with the pop/commercial style. Truly a waste of talent.

I have been a Genesis fan since ´76 when i heard them on an album some lent me, I have been hooked ever since. I wish i could find the entire Seconds Out concert on a DVD somewhere .
...seen this at London Earl's Court in June 1977. Since then, attended Genesis show a dozen of times, but never had these sensations anymore... they were at their best, before Phil took the lights on himself... :-((
I am happy to be 54 and to have witnessed the Wind And Wuthering Show in Cologne on June 17th1977 .. a date I will never forget. It simple changed my life ... i do not exaggerate ... one of the last shows of Steve Hackett with Genesis on a warm early summer evening .. unforgettable. I will see all the boys in heaven ...
Lived it in 1980 front row center...although that was too close up..never again..could not actually hear it for all its quality...but what a night ...we met Collins,Hackett and the drummer Billy Bruford...the Toronto,Canada concerts.
Thanx for these memories!
Gemma
Phil slapped my bum on the way out of backstage! Now I can die.
The best music ever.....I love this album... this was the first show of genesis after Gabriel left..wasn't it?
This song was my first song I heard from Genesis...since that I like Genesis, Yes, Pink Floyd, ELP, Marillon, and the youngest generation is IQ and Jadis.
Steve Hackett wasn't happy at all with the mixing of Seconds Out. "It could have been so much better", he once said.He thought the guitar parts sounded quite weak. Imagine Seconds Out could have sounded even better.
I played this album to death in my teenage years and later on of course.
Nope, we had front row center,as my pal in 1980 owned the 4 seats through the club called 'Cheap Thrills', here in Toronto...I will never sit front row again at a prog rock concert...tooooo close...bad acoustics...so we ckose 7th row for Pink Floyd etc, all the years hence.
THE BEST LIVE RECORDINGS,of the decade !!!!! '76 visiting my best friend (GREG) at college smoking a joint and this, WOW !! WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED TO AMERICA , TWO TOURS IN AGHANISTAN BSM,PURPLE HEART....... DO YOU HAVE ANY PAPERS ????????????????????????
I´ve seen genesis performing live in 1977 with 17 y.o. and it was one of most espetacular experiences in my live, unforgetable. I was totaly envolved with the magic, by the end of the show, with the final part of Musical Box, tears began to roll out, I felt levitating. Too sad they are not doing magic anymore...
Finally they're inducted into the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame. FUSE Channel on March 15th 2010 LIVE from the Waldorf Astoria in NYC- DON'T MISS IT -- GENESIS LIVES FOREVER !!
Igual siempre fue un genio como cantante y como baterista NI HABLAR! lastima toda la plata que perdio con sus 3 divorcios y ahora no puede volver a los escenarios por su sordera.....
No, when the Band auditioned for a new drummer, Phil had to choose the new live drummer and he called Chester via phone, because he knew his work with Zappa etc. And Chester admitted that he loved the album "Trick of the tail"
@celticsarebest i agree,i like pete and glad he left to give us the music he did. but phil was made for the genesis we grew up with.i've seen them a few times, and love phil in concert with genesis, would like to add that tony banks wrote most of there great stuff
Not completely. Where I think Phil Collins has a technically better singing voice than Peter Gabriel, I think Gabriel has a far more interesting voice.
Thats funny, what you said is precisely what I was thinking as I was listening to this video. Its even better demonstrated on other songs that Collins sings with greater dynamics, often times with an almost fragile delicateness. However, Gabriel has that distinctly unmistakable tone that is, as you said, "interesting"
This tune is very powerful & it must have been something else to be seated near the front
I totally agree with you, this performance is unbelievable !! This version in this show is fantastic (also Supper´s Ready is fantastic ! The Seconds Out album is the best live album I ever saw in my life !!!
@celticsarebest Phil Collins did perfectly but I don't agree that he was better than Peter Gabriel. They have different character or timbre. Phil more to POP and Peter more to Opera singer.
Steve's play is amazingly well in pace - it's a pitty he was not allowed to be more in front than he was. It's not that I don't believe Tony did a good job, but his play pushed Steve away which contributed to him leaving the band.
I saw Genesis live in 1977 (Earls Court). They played better than ever, and Collins was a great front man. Sadly it was going downhill with the band after Hackett left.
Ai tempi c'era Tony il perfezionista, Phil il folletto, Mike il tuttofare, Steve l'aristocratico e Chester che dava una mano......ma mancava il genio Peter!!!
A great live album. The film footage, however, is a disaster. The Director had obviously never heard the song before, and was utterly baffled by the idea of an extended keyboard solo.
("what do you mean 'the other band members aren't doing anything' Tarquin ? ... for gawds sake focus on that funny double-headed guitar or something. And get Jeremy to give us a shot of the drummer....just how long can a wretched pianoforte solo LAST anyway ? ")
Even without Peter tha band was at its best, the sound, the production, the way they enhanced each and every song making it a masterpiece, that's why, I believe, Seconds Out shows how they evolved in order to be better musicians and better showmen and get the recognition they deserve, I do feel very strongly about this period of the group beacause they never played this immaculate way again not even in Three Sides Live, Phil's drumming, Tony's keyboards and Mike's 12 string and bass lines ...
è difficile sostitutire l' incantesi o di gabriel con la sua presenza scenica e la sua voce tagliente originalissima, ma diciamo che l' unico che poteva osare era giusto collins!! grandi
Genesis gave me the inspiration to play the drums. I`ve had 3 copies of Seconds out. Thank you Phil, Chester, Mike, Daryl,Tony. you made this 16 year old boy very happy all those years ago and still very Happy today
Never trust anyone who 'goes off' Genesis - fakes, the lot of them!!!

sembra incredibile ma "seconds out" è registrato meglio dei dischi in studio!! paranormale, per me!

This music must have been so weird for Chester...
Reinisen 2 years ago
what? He played on tour for over 20 years
guijam94 2 years ago
Chester also played for Zappa, whose band was jazzy/proggy as well...
rennyminou 2 years ago
No, when the Band auditioned for a new drummer, Phil had to choose the new live drummer and he called Chester via phone, because he knew his work with Zappa etc. And Chester admitted that he loved the album "Trick of the tail"

No, you can't beat Peter in my opinion. But Phil (spell his name correctly if you adore him so) does a good job!
Chrisbajs 1 year ago
@celticsarebest i agree,i like pete and glad he left to give us the music he did. but phil was made for the genesis we grew up with.i've seen them a few times, and love phil in concert with genesis, would like to add that tony banks wrote most of there great stuff

@celticsarebest I think phil was by far the better singer & musician but peter's eccentric english songwriting & stage presence was beyond compare!
dodosquonk 1 year ago
@celticsarebest
Not completely. Where I think Phil Collins has a technically better singing voice than Peter Gabriel, I think Gabriel has a far more interesting voice.

@5jerry1

@Chuichupachichi
ANY version of "Firth Of Fifth," played on a good stereo, up fairly loud, is a memorable event. Period.
5jerry1 11 months ago
I totally agree with you, this performance is unbelievable !! This version in this show is fantastic (also Supper´s Ready is fantastic ! The Seconds Out album is the best live album I ever saw in my life !!!
sf19610217 9 months ago
@celticsarebest Phil Collins did perfectly but I don't agree that he was better than Peter Gabriel. They have different character or timbre. Phil more to POP and Peter more to Opera singer.

Steve's play is amazingly well in pace - it's a pitty he was not allowed to be more in front than he was. It's not that I don't believe Tony did a good job, but his play pushed Steve away which contributed to him leaving the band.

genesis were gods in the 70th...
still no one in sight to create something at this level today...

@brouuummmm - you are correct. I put The Who, Jethro Tull and RUSH in the same category / level with 70's Genesis

I saw Genesis live in 1977 (Earls Court). They played better than ever, and Collins was a great front man. Sadly it was going downhill with the band after Hackett left.

Footage is disspointing. Also wish it were in synch, and I'm a drummer love to see more of chester thompson (1st chair drummmer on the road)!

Bah !

Even without Peter tha band was at its best, the sound, the production, the way they enhanced each and every song making it a masterpiece, that's why, I believe, Seconds Out shows how they evolved in order to be better musicians and better showmen and get the recognition they deserve, I do feel very strongly about this period of the group beacause they never played this immaculate way again not even in Three Sides Live, Phil's drumming, Tony's keyboards and Mike's 12 string and bass lines ...

è difficile sostitutire l' incantesi o di gabriel con la sua presenza scenica e la sua voce tagliente originalissima, ma diciamo che l' unico che poteva osare era giusto collins!! grandi
