Thank you so much for this video. My girlfriends old dell laptop, which ran xp home edition, had this exact problem and she didn't have her original install cd's her as her father lost them. I was able to get my old copy of XP media center, put it in the cd drive, follow this videos instructions step by step and restore my girls lap top to where she can boot up and log on. Thanks again!

Congratulations Sir, From all the step-by-steps that I tried - yours was the only one that worked.. unfortunately, I have a virus that I was trying to system recover from to a previous date and didn't lose the infection by manually recovering. One point I'd like to touch on though..

it's said in many of these types of tutorials to choose the 2nd to last restore point.

I did as you asked, but why is this so important? Can other points be attempted also?

When it said you can attempt to repair this file by starting windows setup, using the original set up cd room select r at the irst screen to start repair. when i clicked r it just rebooted and i kept doing it over and over but it always rebooted. even when i click 1 it reboots

I neeed help!!! after i run the recovery console from usb, after it says loading recovery console pelase wait i get a black screen no usb light flashing or any thing and i cannot access it. i have tired different usb's i have done the guide that you put on youtube for booting for a usb my usb are a lil bit bigger than 1GB i see the UBC and i can choose the options when i choose recovery consle i cant see it it will not load for me to type in commands first time loaded but now it wont.

i need help this morning when i started my computer it said that(some random stuff) and gave me some options witch were safe mode, safe mode with networking, and safe mode with command prompt, config windows to last know work, and start windows normally.i chose all of them all i got was blue screen. i found my reboot disk(burned form my computer becaus i have a emachines) and put it and rebooted now it goes to the xp setup screen and says. autochk program not found-skipping autochk and reboots

I got to to "c:\system~1\_resto~1" directory.. but there's no "rp" files in it. i had various system restore points which i saw only yesterday (before windows update killed xp), however there's no "rp1" (etc) in the directory.. is there anything else you could suggest? Can someone answer me? Will FIXMBR command delete my files from the HDD? Is it safe to use it without backing up my files? I checked previously there are no viruses or malware on that disk. And what about other similar commands in recovery console. FIXBOOT or BOOTCFG? I am asking this cause I am having BSOD error 0x00000024 NTFS.SYS I can't hear the sound in this video cause I'm running the safe mode. Thank you.

The error is a sign that the registry has become corrupt, it happens because of an interruption of the power supply to the PC or Laptop at the time when Microsoft Windows was accessing registry files.

Alright, I have tried this several times and keep getting hitting the same problem. I edited my bios to launch from CD, insert my Windows XP Sp2 disc, reboot, and hit R to repair. 1) use Driver Verifier to fix this problem.
