  • Well Sullivan next time you make sure a hired assassin is dead after you get into a shoot dummy

  • Bloody hell i'm crying again :(

  • For the first time in the film, no dark enclosed rooms, no dimly lit hallways. Just bright, open space.

  • Comment removed

  • Can't says this is predictable at all. No one expected that Michael would go in his fathers foot steps, but the end scene almost made you believe that he would pull the trigger. Now that's well made!

  • "smile":-)

  • dat boy childhood is wrecked

  • Family is important

  • That asshole Tom Hanks is always making me cry, and I'm sick of it!!! He's too awesome damnit

  • First time I watched this film I thought it was brilliant, but after watching it again, I'm seeing plot holes...why the heck did Michael go to Sara's house when he hadn't killed Jude Law's character and Jude knew he going to that house? Makes absolutely no sense that he would go there especially since he wasn't sure that Jude was dead.

  • @karamarieRN i thought the same thing but something tells me that becaause the debts where settled and promises where made from al copone to mr nitty passed to mike sullivan , he was under the assumption that it was over. Not suspecting jude law to be at the house waiting for him. and i think he was waiting because of the chase mike sullivan gave to jude law. and for what he did to his face when the bullet shattered the glass disfiguring him. i think jude law acted to settle the score, rogue.

  • @ExistenceLucid : jude law killed sullivan for his own agenda. By mutilating his face, the conflict between the two men has become personal. Al was out of this. Nitty could have probably given sullivan's address but this remains mystery

  • @karamarieRN Michael believed that Nitti would call off anyone who was pursuing him. That would include the photographer. If Michael had killed the photographer without being wounded, Michael would suspect that Nitti was still out to get him. Michael had already proven how resourceful he was when he robbed Capone's money from the banks and killed off Rooney's entire gang. John Rooney was gone and protecting Connor wasn't worth risking the lives of Nitti's men.

  • @karamarieRN It was all business with Nitti. John Rooney had more to offer in the way of business revenue. Connor Rooney wasn't worth a plug nickel to the syndicate after his father died. The photographer would have read about Connor's murder in the papers. He'd know that NItti allowed it to happen. The photographer held a grudge. He knew that Michael would think that it was safe to go to Sara's house because Nitti had no reason to keep the war going.

  • @karamarieRN Michael called out to Sara expecting her to be home. The photographer probably killed her in another room or somewhere else on the property. That allowed the photographer to hide out in the house for a day or two while he waited for Michael to show up..

  • Conrad Hall's last cinematography job before his death, and every shot is a goddamn work of art. This was my pick for best film back in '02, and quite possibly best of its decade.

  • So many obvious flaws like this killer ( Jude LAw ) not killing HAnks when he got him. And the mob letting Hanks kill Rooney Jr etc. Not a serious movie. Thanks JAmesKlanto. All said, it is a gripping movie, well made.

  • @otsirk17 The old man is dead and cannot protect Connor anymore. Plus the mob hates Connor anyways and doesnt want him to be boss

  • what camera is jude law using?

  • i guess they made bulletproof glass back then, ha, ha!! good moview though...

  • I love how Jude Law drops to the floor like a fucking puppet.

  • Fuck jude law. Anyway i realized in the beginning of the movie because when his son did the opening narration he said he got to really know him only for six weeks.

  • Amazing Amazing Amazing!! The acting and cinematography is incredible!! The music is gorgeous!!!

  • "You've Got Mail" was a shit film. Other than that his career is stellar.

  • @FireKill80 There is that quirky flick Tom Hanks made; Joe vs. the Volcano. It's a guilty pleasure. I love it like I love Reese Witherspoon movies But for sure it isn't in the same class as this movie, or Pvt Ryan, or Cast Away..

  • If you look closely in the window you can see right when hanks get shoot his son start running towards the house. Just noticed that. What an amazing film.

  • @RoseDawsonJick 6:25

absolutely. I combed the comments to see if anybody else picked up on it. One can only imagine the deja vu the kid is suffering. After all, he saw & heard the the gunshots when his mother & brother were killed.

  • 2:35 Could make any father and son cry:(

  • surely it would make more sense to torture graigs character before killing him. giving him an instant death is pointless. should have brought the pliers and a the blowtorch along with him to the hotel!

  • There is no actor i respect more than Tom Hanks.

  • @Josh0473 robert denero

  • @ghandionascooter U mean robert Deniro? lol. Yeah he is a great actor. But the truth is that he's kinda stale. Taxi driver, Godfather 2, Raging Bull, The deer Hunter. He was good back in those days. But since Raging Bull, he's kinda gotten stale. But he is still an amazing actor. But Tom Hanks never picks a bad film.

  • @Josh0473 ye bu ur dad is a ballchinian

  • @ghandionascooter whats that mean lol.

  • @Josh0473 means ur dad has a hairy ball sak 4 a chin

  • @ghandionascooter Do the orderlies know u escaped the asylum??

  • I love the way Capones man had it all set up so that when Sullivan goes to the hotel he can just get in, do the biz and get out.

  • 5:37 - Oh NO!

  • James Bond got owned by Forrest Gump lol!

  • 6:27 - 7:15 If Michael Jr. shot him, it would be as acceptable as when Jim Hawkins shot Mr. Hands in Treasure Island.

  • Excellent and very moving motion picture featuring a great cast with a stiffening of top notch British talent. One possible loose end is why Michael Sullivan came to the lake house straight after eliminating his other enemies, though aware that the hitman knew of the place, having previously intercepted him at the diner on his way there and that the former was still alive. Also whether Aunt Sarah had been killed is left unclear, and Michael Jr does not mention contacting her again afterwards.

  • one of the great films with an all star cast. Of course, it would have been more memorable if he was shot sitting on the can instead. cheers.

  • Last stand....DAMMIT

  • Jude Law is the ultimate troll.

  • WOW wtf didnt expect this to end like that? after the peacefull music and sound of the beach!.........dam

  • I personally find this movie better than the Godfather...I actually care about the cahracters.

  • @Hethrin It's a great movie, but not better than the Godfather

  • @Hethrin No movie of this genre is better than The Godfather, which also has the almost unique distinction of two sequels as good as the original. As with Michael Sullivan Sr, both the first don and his successor are forced by external pressures to do unpleasant things against their wills and are also puppets worthy of our sympathy, rather like the tragic heros in Greek mythology. Less simpatico, Rooney Jr is trigger-happy, and his father has a man killed when he knows his own son to blame.

  • @Hendrikdevuile Don't get me wrong, I love the Godfather, but I just couldn't care about any of the characters, to me they were just mobsters. Mobsters with families? Yeah, but not much else. again, it's just my opinion, I simply like this movie more.

  • Okay, maybe I am missing something here but can someone please tell me what happened to the aunt that was supposed to be in the beach house? It looks to me like the place was empty, so did she move out or did Jude Law kill her? And where did the dog come from? I don't understand what happened there.

  • @superhornet69 here's what i think (because i had to rewind and fast forward to get it too), the sister probably stayed in town at Michael's house to take care of family business since Michael wasn't there to do it. I think she was still alive throughout but she didn't make it home yet before Michael was killed. my theory but then again, i'm using my imagination too so....hope that cleared something up.

  • Spectacular movie, where all the various elements (the acting, the music, the cinematography, the directing & the overall atmosphere that comprises certain scenes!) come flowing together so seamlessly, & so flawlessly, into this work of art! For this movie is a masterpiece, beautiful, compelling & sublime in its presentation of themes both tragic & heroic. It's definitely one of the finest & most superbly crafted movies to ever come out of the gangster genre, right up there with the Godfather.

  • What a coincidence, the song by Thomas Newman is called: Lexingtion Hoten, Roon 1432, and in the movie The Terminal (great funny movie with tom hanks btw) He wants to go to the lexington hotel or was it lexington street?

  • @23hkgrl

I think thomas newman made these songs for the movie :P

Unless it was just INSANE coincidence that some of the other songs are called 'Road to Perdition' and 'Road to Chicago'

  • 2:48 - 2:55

Again I say, that boy is beautiful.

  • two bad men both care about their sons , one has a bad son and another has a good son, bad son dies good son lives fair trade! as Bruce Willies said once in Sin City

  • The ending reminds me of that famous English movie 'Get Carter (1971)'

  • such a heartwrenching scene

  • I like this Frank Nitti so much better than the cardboard Brian DePalma version. Too bad they had to edit Tony LaPaglia's Capone.

  • way to backshoot someone chickenshit

  • @TheCpais lol You expect an assassin to offer someone a fair fight?

  • The bullets go right through him but the glass remains intact...

  • @Slypaperclips bullet proof glass lol good point

  • i thought they were going to meet up with andy and red for a second...

  • good film, good music, but they don't mix at all

the music almost makes it all feel like we're watching a happy film, this film is a freakin tragedy

and i mean, the kid is emotionless after seeing his mother and brother murdered, and finally his father, what the hell? where's the acting there?

  • tom hanks never does a shit film

  • @ZanderHolden "Bonfire of the Vanities". That being said, even the greats have a dog or two on their resume. It happens.

  • @ZanderHolden Holy shit his performance was bitchin' huh.

  • @NewWaveFan1

    lol

  • @ZanderHolden never will.

  • HaHaHa, James Bond got killed, thanks Tom Hanks!

  • at 1:40 dont understand the blodspatter???

  • @saltfan2 he would of been sat up in the bath. The blood on the wall would be his brains as he was first shot in the head, then twice in the chest.

  • Tom Hanks still has it, true actor

  • Best fucking movie ever made

  • Best fucking film ever made!

  • @kickstckle i do not think it will go down as the best movie ever but what I can say is that every scene was shot very well with a hell of alot of thought put into it, in almost a "Edward Hopper" style (look up the works of this artist and you'll see what I mean), it really held my interest, had good sound track music......and something that I could watch a few times and not get tired of it. It's a well crafted film.

  • @inkey2 There's a lot of George Bellows in there too.

  • This, with out a doubt, is Hanks at his most badass.

  • I fucking hate you people..your spoilers.

  • i sort of see Jude Laws character killing Mike because he shot him. i always wondered if it was because he never got a call that he hit was off or if it was something personal at the end.

  • @buck123

In the original graphic novel, the assassin kills the aunt and uncle who are living in Perdition first, then Mike Sr. gets mad, pulls out his gun, and says, "Someone's going to die." After that, the assassin shoots him in the back with a shotgun. He turns around and Mike Jr. shoots him, then helps his wounded father into the car. He is going to take him to the hospital, but instead takes him to a Catholic church, where the priest absolves him of his sins.

  • If i was that kid i would get up and get thee gun and shot that fucker a million times in the face. and continue my fathers work and not stop till there all dead.

  • I've always been struck by the matter-of-fact, its-about-time way Hanks portrays Sullivan killing Conner Rooney, finally. An anticlimactic climax. You can almost hear inside his head 'all this loss for a cowardly, worthless punk like you'.

  • Jude Law is a camper.

  • @TheSerpico97 nice

  • @TheSerpico97

    hahahaha, :)

  • @TheSerpico97 True, but Sullivan used Final Stand / Second Chance Pro ... unforgivable! ROFL

  • @TheSerpico97 good c.o.d. reference mate

  • @TheSerpico97 lol

  • Keep on replaying 1:31-1:33 if you really hate connor

  • Jude Law looks so creepy with all those scars

  • Great flick. Thanks so much for uploading.

  • Another great scene when mike sullivan is given the ok by nitti to kill connnor. Its a powerful scene as sullivan walks through all the gaurds to connors room. Its as if all these gangsters knew connor deserved to die,and let sullivan in with open arms to do what should of been done a long time ago.

  • @jays2474

U r exactly right; amazing idea and scene, huh?

  • man the last scene is brilliant!! amazing movie!!

  • What a great background music for such an epic scene. The main scene where Tom Hanks shoots the bad guy in the bathtub without any emotional impulse. The moment Tom leaves the bathroom he slightly strips the door with his coat, this causes that the door fall into the room and the spectator can see the dead guy in the mirror still watches into the same direction from where he was shot. I guess he saw the bullet coming before he died. I really like this scene ;)

  • i knew it was too good to be true. i knew tom hanks wasnt gonna live in this movie, even though i almost thought he was going to . i remembered jude law was still alive when tom was walking up the stairs. damn u jude law!!!

  • @18ayonuss no happy ending indeed :( damn awesome movie tho :D

  • damn mike jr. knows what to do man because when jude law stood up mike jr. kept the gun aimed at his head. Brilliant!

  • @dontdenythetruth

Wut r u talking about? Hanks' dying character, Mike Sr., is the one that shoots Law's character, not Mike Jr.

  • @20103million i know but read what i said i never said he killed him i said that mike jr. new where to shoot and followed his target.

  • @dontdenythetruth

Wut is soo brilliant or impressive about him keeping the gun aimed at Law's head since he doesn't pull the trigger? Why is just Jr's following of the target soo special to u and worth noting? The writer and/or director only wanted to show that he cud not pull the trigger, not that he knew how or where to aim.

  • @20103million Dude i just said it just because i just thought that it was just neat to see that's all. Geez why even message me in the first place man if it wasnt worth noting.

  • Dammit jude law!! D;

  • I feel like crying ! someone cheer me up ! :(

  • I Love the way Jude Law's Character Carries That Camera Around on His Neck which is actually a dual Symbolism, Good Movie Totally Underrated

  • you wait for it, you know its going to happen because Jude Law's character isnt done just yet. he's at peace, watching the ocean and his son but you know what's going to happen. they wait long enough to hold the suspense, then just long enough to convince you that its cool, he's safe..then bang!

    hell of a movie

  • This is a tiresome overdone movie that goes on forever, and the main actors although very good seem out of their range in portraying these characters.

  • @arrivedp Like you know anything.

  • @arrivedp u talk shit ...

  • tom hanks plays a good gangster

  • My favourite movie...ever. I've watched it countless times, and it still sends chills down my spine.

  • The end of this movie was filmed 45 minutes from my house. I remember people getting pictures with Tom Hanks on the beach. Got to love Michigan.

  • JamesKlanto many thanks for the upload, this was a gem. Not as well known as it should be, possibly because people don`t like to see Hanks killed off in final minutes or possibly because Jude Law`s reverse Mohawk hairstyle was truly chilling.

  • how did Law get those kind of scars. Hanks shot him with a pistol, but those look like buckshot wounds.

  • the glass shatters, hitting him in the face

  • See when you dont take care of a problem how it comes back to bit you in the ass? Or shoot you in the back? He should have killed that sicko hitman/photographer when he had the chance. Instead he gets shot two different times by him....

  • whats the song called when he goes to kill all the people? (when going up the elevator? Its so damn good!

  • How stupid are you? Michael Sullivan Sr. is the antihero to this story. You follow him, you follow his motivations and you discover who he is. Yes, he is a hitman, but he's not a bad man. He cares for his family and, quite obviously, throws everything he knows away for his remaining son.

Jude Law plays the cold, emotionless, calculating villain. I don't think they could've made that any more obvious. He's no bystander. He kills innocent people while attempting to kill a father and son.

  • jesus...i'm gonna ask you the same question.

sometimes, what someone says is not necessarily what he/she truly believes in.

i'm obviously a Jude Law fan so just gimme a break.

  • Yeah, because that was SO clear.

  • I love it...

One man murders but hes not bad? Because he loves his family? That makes it ok then!! lol, another man murders and hes evil.. Go figure?

  • @LaMOi1 u ever heard of a richeous kill... it is when u kill somebody and can be forgiven because they wer a threat or deserved it.... if u shoot a armed thug or mobb boss, its all part of the game.... but shooting a unarmed women or a child is a whole different thing now isnt it

  • @Filligan and he takes pictures of them after.... that scene at the end wer hanks is shot and he pulls out his camera with his fucked up face was great...

  • @Filligan i don't think you comprehend what an antihero is

  • @Jackalofdeath Was it the correct definition that threw you?

  • Are you kiddin me? first Michael was a hitman who killed worthless business men who took advantage of their creditors big time. Michael killed a bunch of hoods who murdered two innocent people and tried to protect the trigger man so if people are sad cause he died then that's why And as for Maguire he was a heartless hitman who was ready to kill a child did you catch that or did you not care maguire is the kind of hitman who would do N E for money and that's just not acceptable in my book

  • @jh4everl lol, you're twisted view of reality is not on the level with the rest of society!

  • @fatsomamacheese

like all the great scientific thinkers of the past, my view is ahead of its time.

one day, when i'm dead, the rest of society will come to terms with what i say.

    ;)

  • @jh4everl Society will never come to terms with it. Society, by definition, has evolved to protect itself which is why it survives. The day it stops that, it will fail.

  • Jude Law is such an awesome actor. Not many guys in the industry can play both a convicing good guy and bad guy role. He was creepy as hell in this movie though.

  • from the looks of the bullet wounds they must have pierced his heart or punctured his lungs that's what killed Mike Sullivan

  • The only bad thing about this film was the attempt to make jude law look more bald than he is, by shaving the middle and front of his head, that looked reeeeeally bad.

  • At least he got his son to his aunts house

  • Mike as with i watching the movie. forgot about the hitman out to get him. Maguire still had a contract on him. and it became personal when he was hit with the crystal jar. He did not care about ending the contract.. He wanted Mike to pay for his scared face.

  • The overhead tracking shot that swoops down and follows Hanks into the hotel room and finally into the bathroom took all day to shoot and weeks of preparation. It is one long impossible shot that is so good that you don't realize how amazing and impossible it really was. The arches in the hallway were on pulleys, a steadicam operation was on a platform on a crane. As soon as the camera passed through the archway they were lowered, and when the camera boomed down the operator steps off follows

  • that was perfectly explained jish55 but Mike wasn't thinkin' he should have realized that maybe the other hit man might not have been in contact with the people who hired him and therefore didn't know that he didn't need to kill Mike. Maguire wouldn't gone any further with the hit his money comes first knowing he wasn't gonna get paid would have made him quit. hit men don't have an emotional investment in their jobs they foucs on the pay

  • @donnylovesayesha1 only one problem. when Maguire was hit in the face with the crystal in pt. 10. it made it personal. Maguire was a self centered man about himself and his work. he felt imperfect. and wanted revenge. but thats just my point of view.

  • That evil photoshoppin prick! >:[

    Jude Law is great!

  • Craig's character was such a dumb-ass in this movie.

  • he was more than a dumbass he was a fuckin big baby not babylike babyish

  • 1:59 is gorgeous!!! 2:42 2:48 are beautiful shots as well. Beautiful movie. my favourite.

  • the part with the mirror is amazing!!!! R.I.P. Conrad L. Hall!!!

  • it must be very hard for young Michael to lose all of his family

  • I love the scene when Sullivan avenges his wife and son's murders.

  • What makes the climax so perfect, to me, is that Mike enters a almost all white room before he dies.

  • @TrustyBucket

    what does that symbolize?

  • and then his son can't pull the trigger. and when Michael dies Hoechlin's performance is amazing!!! So emotional!!!!

  • After watching this again, I can't help but want Jude Law to play The Joker in the next Batman movie. He's such an unsettling psycho in this movie.

Watching for the first time I thought it was kind of a weird showdown: Tom Hanks vs. Jude Law, but it was cool.

  • yeah i didnt even realize it was jude law until i saw the credits, amazing work

  • but heath ledger is the bomb. and even though jude law is a ledgend, he couldn't of portrayed the joker as well as heath...

  • My but you are high and mighty making moralistic pronouncements, o anonymous americanjedi77. Alas, many who love by the gun never "damn well ...die by it." But it's a lot easier taking silly potshots than living the life the father and son did.

  • It's so sad at the ending.

When the Father and son were at their

closest they'v ever been. They were

going to spend the rest of their life

    has Father and Son, forever.

And it had to be ruined. So sad ending.

But one of the best movies.

  • ARGH!!!! That knit-picking, persistent CUNT!!!!! Why?! Why did he ruin this for the kid?! ARGH!!!! People like that just find places like Hell to be vacation spots!!!! I wanna shoot him!!!!!

Sigh...but I guess it had to happen right? But still...

  • chill out, would ya?

  • in the end he gave up everything so his son wouln't lose his soul.

  • To be fair, everyone got what they deserved.

  • Comment removed

  • Aye, for sure.

  • Excellent music in this movie.

  • thats a great move hanks did in the hallway, the way he pulled out the gun and cocked it. A short scene but it proved he meant business

  • @inkey2

I completely agree. That scene was done perfectly.

  • earlier in the movie Sullivan said the guy knew where they were go'n so they couldn't go to the relative's beach house in Perdition so it leaves me wondering why he did but even so, this was an excellent movie and thats not even a matter of perspective

  • @Davie549 you have to remember that he did somewhat deal with the man, so he thought it was now safe because not only did he deal with the man, but he took care of the people who originally put the hit on him, thus thinking that the hit was taken off of him.

  • Presumably Nutti would have taken the hit off, and Jude Law's character killed purely out of revenge (for the disfigurment)?

  • oh ya, that's an almost guarantee, I was just explaining why Sullivan assumed it was safe now, and why he pretty much let his guard down.

  • i like how other people like how they thought it was like how they how of would how to the how of the part when he said how he like the assassin how he shot the how in the back and after that of how in the world

    u know what im sayin?

  • Alright for them just letting Hanks murder the son...

  • That was an amazing scene.

  • You live by the sword, you die by the sword.

  • I like how he shot the assassin so that his son wouldn't have to.

  • NOOO not TOM HANKS!!!!!!!!!!

  • Starting at :21 seconds to 1:58, this is sheer perfection. You will not see a better filmed scene in ANY movie. From the music to the camerawork, nothing comes close.

  • that would have been so funny if it turned out the assassin wasnt gana get paid after all that...if he survived this journey
