@eqgrl2011 The yarn color should match the horse as best as possible. I think they're using purple in the video so that you can see where the yarn goes :D
What type of knot do you use with the yarn at the end of the braids? I braid yarn in like you do and knot it, but when it get pulled on the braid stretches and sometimes the yarn comes out. Are the braids too loose?
i generally have it just a half inch or a little more of "feathered" mane past the width of my hand. this makes for lots of little braids like you see on this horse's neck. i prefer to put up a "wall of braids" on the neck, but not everyone can tie in all the hair i do without tying off the tail exactly like i do and folding the hair back and under. there's lots of parts to the job and all of them have to be done together to achieve the results i get.
How short do you prefer the mane to be? I've heard its supposed to be the width of your hand which is what I make my mares, but should it be just a touch longer ?
Also do you count how many down you do on each braid before you put in the string and after? If so how many? :) thank you so much! You are awesome at this!!!!
How many cross overs do you do total? I braid down to 10, put the yarn in, then continue to 15. I have tried going longer but for some reason I can't get them to lay flat! Also, I'm planning on going to a show and braiding.. do you have any tips of mane preparation? Thanks a lot!
hey joe! i really admire your work, and because of watching your videos my braiding has gotten MUCH better. ive gotten tons of compliments and whenever im asked how i do it, i always tell them to go check out your videos. :-) but i have one question: after you braid the mane, when you pull the end through in order to get the loop of hair to form your button, what do you do with the loose hair at the end of the braid? i always have trouble figuring out what to do with it. thanks!
yes, exactly. first you start right over center. roll each piece under with your thumb and forefinger, then press down with the pointer on the top of the braid once it's turned under. that helps it lay flat
Your braiding is awesome!! I was hoping you could help me out. I was wondering if you did any tail braiding or if you could possibly upload a video. I am a local braider in my area but I have trouble braiding tails. It starts out great but about half way down it gets too thick and i have too much hair in my fingers. It starts to get looser and its too thick to pinwheel. Hopefully you can help!!
you should do a Hafilinger's mane, I have one and they don't exactly eant u to the cut the mane short like u would with a hunger. So her mane is really long, plus she has what they call a "double mane" so its like the thickest mane I have ever seen!!
When pulling on the mane like that does it hurt the horsE? i have asked this question a couple of times and some people say yes and others say no, so im rather confused if it does or not.
@PrometheusFlyingSolo not if you do it right and thin the area you're pulling out down with a (bottom) clipper blade or use a "ferminator" on the ;mane
This video is great, but it doesn't do justice to the experience of just how fast and fluid John is, gang. Folks, he is AMAZING! So glad to find you here on the YouTube, John, and see you're still in the biz and doing more massage! Miss you!!! Stay safe and well!
Hello John! I am enjoying your videos! I have a question: we have a lovely, "deadhead" TB like the one in this video but unfortunately, he has a very thin mane, not matter what we do! How can we make his braids look better? They're so skinny that it's very hard to make them look right.
could you make a video showing how to do the braid step by step? because i love your videos but in this video you do it very fast so could you maybe do it slower?
@ClariFlutiPhone you can with rubberbands if you want to, but it doesnt come out as nice. although i have seen some people (a.k.a. some friends) make it work, so i guess if you do a good job it can look proffesional.
Just watching your video. I was a braider in college as a summer job. I was lucky enough to pick up some tricks from a circuit braider. I am a Mom now and am teaching my daughter to braid. I am curious do you double twist with your left hand, and only once with your right? Braids are beautiful.
my horse is an Arabian and he is kind of impatiant and really doesnt like his head messed with do you have any advice for me or any trick you use to keep his head still/ keep him calm...
do you braid the yarn into the mane or just tie the ends off with it? different people tell me different things when it comes to how they braid, but yours come out so good, so obviously your way works best :)
i only put the yarn in at the end. i put in 3 more twists and tie off. i do this so if i make the braid too long or too short it's easy to fix. also, that's the best way to crimp the end and turn the tail end to the side so catching the end in the knot is easier. more twists of yarn in the braid makes it harder to make your manes perfect.
I love braiding, just never manage to make them stay and look good! In the UK we plait them, fold them in half once, fold them in half again then use a small elastic band to made them stay. lol
Thank you for this post. Now I know why my braids never look good...I use this technique, but, now I see I was using to much hair for each braid. You are a terrific braider!
I'm new to this, how did you get from the string of plaits hanging down, to all the little circles? Did you just double them up? I think it would be better if you explained this in the vid. :)
you are an amazing braider! im 15 and get paid to braid at some of my local hunter shows but im HORRIBLE at the pinwheel, could you post a video showing us braiding enthusiasts how to do it properly? preferably on a grey or palomino so it's easier to see =]
where did you get your little blue tool? I have found some online that are pricey-is there a chance a craft or hair supply store would sell one like youre that clips shut (it looks like) when you pull the strings through? And what is you tool called? Thanks!!
this is called a "latch hook" and you can get it at walmart or hobby lobby. you should pay under $2. it is for rug hooking, so ask in the crafts depts:)
John you are wonderful! thank you so much for your video- is there any chance you plait tails and could put a video of that up as well? Thank you for spending the time to put this one up!
The yarn is twisted in the last three revolutions and is tied off in a single hitch.
The trick is to tie the end off so it will crease at the point of the knot and fold backwards without letting the braid unravel at all. This maintains a tighter braid longer and keeps you from getting "palm trees". It also allows you to tie off a longer "tail" and braid less of the length of the mane. This leaves a thick tail end to help "flesh out" the braid and gives it a better base.

My only problem is my horses forelock is pretty long, and thick, but I don't want to pull/trim/cut it because it's so nice.
Will that change the size of the braid ?
Because I don't want the braid to be too big, and look weird compared to his others, which will be smaller.

@HannBrownie its a rug hook you can get one at walmart or a craft store for about a dollar or so.
