Gary is plain AMAZING and does a GREAT Paul in both films. He made Backbeat enjoyable to a certain degree. And he's great in The Linda McCartney Story as well.
Agree 100% with Prismgap. Iain Softley himself said that he was deliberately trying to soft-pedal the fact that the band became The Beatles as we know them. I think if the real-life Paul thought about it, he'd recognise that the character in the movie is based on him as he was when he was an 18 year old lad - a bit insecure, occasionally insensitive but clearly bright, funny and incredibly driven.
The movie was not about Paul. It was about John Stu and Astrid. That's why they kept the movie from being about the Beatles. Too much Paul and it would've suddenly become The Beatles movie. I mean Ringo is in the movie for what? 5 seconds?
Let's be honest, Paul might well have been the one to stop John from making a scene or embarrassing himself in front of Bert Kaempfert. That doesn't take away from his rock'n'roll self.
He wasn't bad as Paul. I believe Paul was really laid back and not excitable even in his younger years. But they did have him too soft spoken. I've heard some stories about Paul and that he was passive aggressive but not a pushover.
he looks like Eric Idle in the Rutles!

the movie is sopposed to be about Stuart Sutcliffe more than the rest of them.

None of these Beatle movies ever capture Lennon's humor which was a HUGE part of their appeal

I agree that it was pointless, but it was still brilliant. I liked Gary Bakewell in this movie... it was the only part of the movie I liked :-P
