PROOF PROOF!! YOU DONT NEED TO BE GREAT MUSICIANS. IF YOU KNOW WHAT MAKES A GOOD SONG AND YOU HAVE A DISTINCT SOUND YOUR THERE! GREAT PLACEMENT AND STRUCTURE IS MORE INTERESTING THAN RE-GUR-GA-TASH-ION
the moniters were working at this gig. Steve's guitars were damaged in transit and rendered largely unreliable, going out of tune etc. That's why he bought that awful Firebrand as back up to his '74 white custom and (alleged) '54 black custom. The firebrand sounds naff & tinny especially at Winterland, but seems ok on the short clip of GSTQ from Tulsa.
@theverge69 It's called a Gibson Firebird not Firebrand lol Winterland Steves Twin wasen't mic'd properly until the encore of No Fun, it's too bad I loved his playing at Winterland. The 54 BB was sold along with his '74 witch he even himself doubts it was a '74, it was possibly a '73 from what him and Sylvain has said. Malcom sold all his gear after they split. Steve has made a handful of copies and has sold them over the years, never claiming tobe the original but "his".
Even though they were worlds apart (but both playing the clubs at this time) I always thought Steve Jones and Eddie Van Halen were linked in some weird way...making the guitar sound ALIVE AND DANGEROUS again. Obviously Eddie is a technical prodigy and Steve's not. But Steve doesn't get enough credit for his POWER and tone, and Eddie doesn't get recognized enough for his insanely punk approach to guitar (at least in the DLR days). This might sound crazy, but I bet a few guitarists understand
@mielazul Yeah totally agree. Steve's tone was incredible, especially in this recording. I love it. He was incredibly tight, even Chris Thomas (NMTB producer) said he was one of the tightest he's ever known.
Steve Jones did alright considering he was getting spat at, had shit thrown at him, didnt have a fucking bass player who could play with him and was probably off his head anyway.
@TheAliceBeth Their manager wanted a song called Sub-Mission about bondage and domination, but the band decided to mess with him and write a song about a submarine mission, but still make it dirty. lol
these Atlanta tracks are great thanx for posting... if i had to introduce punk to someone this Atlanta material is it...and how raw and totally punk...
steve jones is my idol !!! i have a pretty big feelin he did alot of it on purpose!!! through bordem because he thought the band was going backwards!!!

Also, the monitors werent working so they had no idea how they sounded. Rotten sounds amazing for not being able to hear himself.
