What is the size of the stylus being used here? There is very little or no background noise from the disc, but I just read another post where someone said they don't use their 3 mil tip on DD's because it's too big! Wouldn't a 7mil just slip around the groove and make distortion and surface noise?
Depending on the DD, you can sometimes use an LP stylus, since they are vertically cut, most of the "info" is on the bottom of the groove. Edison's quality control was another story. I'm pretty sure I used a 2.0 mil stylus on this disc. It can vary all over the map with styli sizes on Edison discs.
Pat of the answer is knowing the subject. Edison DD's were made from 1913-1929. The first electrical experimental recordings were made no earlier than late 1927, and then not released. Recording for Edison. in any format ended 10/20/29.Or within a week of that date.
How do you find out the age of these old records? I don't see it printed anywhere on the label. BTW, I like the song. I didn't know there were any electrically recorded diamond disc records out there.
Ermine Calloway was an Edison artist. All I know is what you say, she "tries" to Helen Kane her way through, which she does well! Apparently she also recorded for Gennett but I've never seen any of these. I think most of her records are pretty scarce!
since it is a diamond disc, doesnt the leads on the headshell/cartridge need o be rewired to be compatible, because they are hill and dal recordings? i have tried and failed. any tips on the proper rewiring method?
Yes, you need to reverse the leads on one channel. Move the + side to the - side and vice versa. My EQ has a switch so I don't need to do that, but that's what you do.
I was unfamiliar with the brand - checked out their web site. They sell a model that looks and functions almost exactly like my Numark. I guess the DJ field is very competitive. Anyway both offer features that are great for 78's like the speed range and instart start/stop.
Actually, you're exactly right. I still have a "spare" Numark. I bought this for it's speed versatility, plus being able to play 16 inch ETs was something I'v always wanted to be able to do!
My Numark has the same range as yours but won't play 16". I was fortunate to find a Garrard 401 transcription table with an SME tone arm in a thrift store for $30!
she has better voice than helen kane, we actually hear every sound she makes, she knows how to project.

Did you play around with the phasing by crossing the cartridge leads? I get good results with my vertical Edisons that way.

Who sings? Rivals Helen Kane, especially on such a crisp record.

It's a Vestax - variable speed from 16-120 RPM. I love it, it can even play 16-inch radio discs!
