Beautiful movie. It shows what would of happened to Jesus if he would of had decided to sin and have children. Of course Jesus is sinless he can do no wrong. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.
As far as I'm concerned, Last Temptation is up there with The Passion of Joan of Arc as one of the most deeply religious and spiritual films I've ever seen.
The amount of blind vehemence this brought forth from the "religious right" is mind-boggling.
"What does it mean to identify, as the definitive embodiment of God in human history, someone who declares himself abandoned by God?... If Jesus is the self-communication of God in flesh, then the cry of dereliction from the Cross is a communication of the selfhood of God: God is revealed when there is nothing to be said about God, nothing to be said about God by God incarnate."
It should be acknowledged that the author of the book this film was based on is Nikos Kazantzakis, a great Greek author who also wrote Zorba the Greek!
absolute brilliant film! You know the fact that, amid all the controversy, Scorsese was still nominated for Best Director for this, showed how absolutely genius it was. Had the subject matter been something more popular, like Dances with Wolves, it would've swept everything. soundtrack by Peter Gabriel is ahead of its time, as is just about everything else in another Scorsese classic. Ironically, watching Lady Gaga's Judas made me think of/search for this.
the best movie ever..i reccomend to everyone...no matter if u r atheist or catholic or jew or wathever...i saw it when i was 17 and i was finishing highschool..it was the answer for so many questions about bible and about faith ....and the music?? well it changed the way i listen music forever.. cheers...& good music to everyone
..esta pelicula fue una verdadera conversión al cristianismo.. la misma tragedia en el corazón de Kazantzakis la hemos vivido muchos.. es volver a retomar el camino.. Jesús..
The best ending to any movie in movie history. As Christ is dying, he smiles in exhausted relief and says "it is accomplished," and then as Gabriel's triumphant music comes up (sounds like a forest full singing birds next to church bells) Scorsese fades into a kaleidoscopic light show in which you can also see the sprocket holes from the film strip jump and bump into the frame. Supposedly a technical snafu that was left in, though who knows. Gorgeous and emotional.
ALL WRONG! Jesus is God's sun (son) and SIN (Evil) the Babylonian Moon God would come OUT during the day light hours and TEMPT Jesus, BUT the SUN never comes out at night time, during the time of SIN, and that's why Jesus the sun, never tempted Sin (EVIL) the moon, the dark chaos of nigh time. Why do you think Jesus is our risen (RA EYES) savior? In Egypt his name was SET, when god's sun would go to the underworld at SUNSET. Wen the sun REturned, he was Horus RA EYES, as in HORIZON! Truthiracy
great film, but it happen something wierd to me the other day watching this movie. I was fallin sleep but something woke me up and i saw among dreams that the characters in the movie were deamons. I didnt put much of attention to that in that moment bc of the sleep but now i think is something really wierd.
its a shame this films ruined by the tony soprano style judas and gay pontious pilate but it shows jesus was a human my favourite part is when jesus meets paul the man who started spreading jesus message jesus tells him to stop spreading lies about him this is what i think happened jesus was over hyped into being some divine being when he was one of gods most loved prophets god and faith gave jesus his healing power not jesus he was the same as anyone else
@galgia12345 Not exceptionally. NOTHING like Mel Gibson's Passion of the Christ. The more...graphic parts are sort of 'concealed'. Martin Scorsese turned it down, and very little of the movie focuses on Christ's death. MOST is about his life, and struggling with his emotions, his human side...
One of my favorite films and I think it gives a unique perspective considering most of the films about "Jesus" focus on the divine side and shy away from his humanity.
I don't follow a religion, but I adore Jesus because he represents the human search for divinity within and struggle against ignorant and selfish authority.
As an atheist i love this film... After the book and the film i have developed so much sympatyhy for Jesus. By the way the film as good as the book, which is a quite rare case... Greetings to Princessportent, long time no seen. Hope you are ok :)
DAMN!! WHAT A FUCKIN' GREAT THEME! This is my favourite tune of the entire film. And yes, is one of the greatest monuments in the history of cinema. It can't be a blasphemy (here's a true catholic speaking), because the author told that the story wasn't based in it's entirety upon the Bible. It a twisting-story, like Jorge Luis Borges did with his tales.
It is! Even atheists/ agnostics (I guess, technically, I might classify myself as agnostic) usually like it...for the music, the direction...the odd visuals - almost dreamlike, surreal. So many lingering moments that make it an almost harrowing experience (although it has grown on me quite a bit...)
I agree. It is one of my three favorite movies about Jesus (along with Jesus Christ Superstar and Jesus of Montreal) and this is my favorite song from the movie.
All three movies make Jesus' humanity much more accessible, which is important for those of us who don't believe in his divinity.
Really?? I loved the entire album...each one impacted me for different reasons, and in the context of the movie...was perfect imho. "Disturbed" is another one I love a lot, but it *is* so low key. To me, it's eerie...but if someone just had the volume down too low while watching the dvd, I doubt they'd even hear it...
I also am stunned. It is one of the most beautiful pieces of work ever (the whole album), imho. (I'd also put select pieces from Ennio Morricone's "The Mission" - such as Gabriel's Oboe - and Michael Nyman's "Gattaca" soundtrack on similar footing). Some things just grab you at the deepest level and never really leave you...
i wouldn't take oscar seriously :) this album and the film did not take any oscar. so did not many other good films. there are many good films being done all around the world and oscar does not take them into account. and thanks princessportent, great music and nice clip :)
It's probably my favorite album by Peter Gabriel, and that says something. His work for Rabbit Proof Fence also fit that film perfectly too, though. He really has a gift for soundtracks :D
I think this music is so rich. I'm a huge Peter Gabriel fan, but I think his soundtrack work is the ultimate best - my favorite works. But I think this movie was the perfect vehicle for PG's music ;)
He was fasting in Idumea at that point (day 10 or 11 of a water fast to connect with God, in the desert). He was weak, possibly hallucinating...or possibly being tormented by Satan, so he was scared and dizzy and feeling completely overwhelmed. It's one of my favorite scenes in the entire film :)
I always felt like the historical representation of Christ has marked a separation from nature, feminine power and magic. This film partially breaks through this veil, this tune makes me feel reconciled with this great power.
Actually, those are reasons why I find fundamental Christianity harder to believe in, Caco ;) I am very much a pantheist, very much one for the equal representation of both genders, one for animal rights and so on. This take on the Christ story impacted me for the reasons you outlined - because it IS a departure from most of the takes, and I think it a little more embracing of all peoples, and also shows Christ's greatest spiritual turmoil, internal turmoil.
Maybe I'm missing something but I never felt the Biblical Christ was harmful in any way to animals or women. (Certainly Catholics don't think so since they have given such high praise to his mother, St. Mary.)
No, I don't feel Jesus ever acted in ways that were harmful to women or animals either. Insofar that I support the actions of Jesus Christ, I'm a *total* Christian. But there is a lot outside of Christ in the Bible...things of animal sacrifice and basically the abuse of women, and maybe that's what cacofonico was talking about?? Jesus IS the highlight of the Bible though, absolutely. *lol*
I think you miss it because you (i assume) are a male. It is not harmful but certainly does not stand for women's or species' rights. That is perfectly normal simply because it reflects the ideas of 2000 years ago and i am sure was extremely revolutionary for its time. I take the inspiration of love and see the rest of it as a gift of history for humankind. I probably have more respect for human Jesus more than an avarage christian, that's another thing.
I don't think this was for me, Unilka ;)?? But I agree. I think that within the Bible as a whole...there is OBVIOUS diminishment of females - a segmenting in an obvious dismissive fashion of what they had to offer. Fundamentalists often take this to a sad extreme, which is why many feminists have so many problems WITH religion. I do think *Jesus* the character, however, stood out for his love for all. His views often seem contrary to others in the Bible, actually (and confusingly...)
no it was not for you princesporten. it was a comment about another person's comment. sorry for the confusion. i agree with your ideas on fundamentalism. it never works and creates more polarization among people. love is the most powerful knowledge :)
I agree, Unilka :) I also think love does provide a form of knowledge...when what someone feels is true love, and not-ego inspired love, not lust. I think a problem - a very big problem - is that many of us don't receive true love, nor have felt it for others. So that leaves us in a very desolate, barren place, spiritually. And that leads to hatred and killing and 'needless' suffering. I also think people that crave love, deep down, often support fundamentalist ideologies...
Thank you for making this video. I have the soundtrack and this is probably my favorite song on the album (probably my favorite song period). The song should be left to fade out :) This video is very creative and I felt very emotional watching it. You put it together well. I applaud your efforts! Thanks!
Thanks for commenting Rodimus! Yes, this is one of my favorite pieces of all time too. To me it's such an emotionally powerful song - representing joy, achievement. I think some of the others on the soundtrack, such as "Disturbed" and "Wall of Breath" were equally powerful for other emotions as well. Have you listened to Gabriel's soundtrack for Rabbit Proof Fence? It's amazing too!
Yeah, I totally agree. This song makes me feel so good. Peter Gabriel is a genius. I like the album version and the end credits version. They're both great.
"Disturbed" is an awesome song as well. I like how is segues into "It Is Accomplished". I haven't heard any of his other soundtracks except for some songs I found on Youtube.
