I'm all for scanning the area, but why make such a big show of it? I saw what was in front of me when things started, and I see what is behind me as I make the defense. "Scanning" is just being aware of your surroundings, which can be done as you counter as well as after.
As for fleeing the scene, that is context contingent.
However, I totally agree with the idea of being aware of the environment, and making distance when necessary.
I would rather beat up the assailant till he's half dead. Makes for an easier escape.
