Fraternities that don't haze are called "sororities." Hazing is not that bad. If your not tough enough to take it, then your not put out for it and that is what separates independents from greeks. It's like taking some shit now to be treated like royalty and being prepared for the rest of your life later. If they don't haze, it's not a true fraternity, and your getting nothing out of joining. Separates the tough from the weak, and the dominant male from the follower.

While I've never belonged to a fraternity, I don't think one may generalize like this. There are good fraternities which are open to most, if not all, and they do good things, contribute charity work, etc.

Watch an episode of "The Adventures Of Ozzie & Harriet" to see Dave & Rick Nelson in a good, non-snobby fraternity. More frats, even today, are like that than the one seen here.

I think some kind of ritual hazing as a means for qualifying for a fraternity or any private organization should be acceptable, so long as no permanent and/or serious physical harm is involved (a minor spanking would be harmless) to the pledge.

Another thing that needs to be done is redefine what constitutes acceptable & safe hazing. Hazing needn't be perceived as a negative practice always involving physical harm & sexual submission.

There are relatively safe forms of pranks & stunts that could be considered hazing, i.e.--removing a well-known school icon, picture, statue, etc. from its usual location, or "kidnapping" some symbolic item from a competing fraternity house to show bravery & loyalty.
