  • Chicago has last 1/3 of its population in the last 40 years... Do they really need more housing?

  • Chicago spire was cancelled

  • new york take a lesson chicago will built the spire !! ground work already took place I cannot believe all the red tape with new york city the twins should of been built already . whats up second city huh! yeah right chez

  • @meljes2 CHICAGO SPIRE WILL NOT BE BUILT

  • It will get built if you just wait for a while. The economy will get better and there is a demand for this building. This guy is just some dumb old guy out of touch with today’s world. His breathing drove me insane.

  • @MRY1181 That "dumb old guy" has built thousands of units worth billions of dollars around the country.

    And you?

  • I'm just pointing this out because some of you people from chicago don't understand something that's going on in NYC. The new world trade center is being rebuilt, and guess who's designing the transportation hub? That's right! Santiago Calatrava! He's going to be paid a fortune by the port authority to design this, and that just might jumpstart the spire again. Hopefully it gets held of for many more years so that I can buy an apartment there when I'm done with school. :)

  • Guys the city doesn't pay for it it's aboriginal ate company

  • grrr what the hell its a good design but why why does it have to be bulit around this hard economic times!!! fuck it!!!!! this is all the fucking governments fault!! stupid george w bush! i wanted to live in chicago when i grow up so that i could get a good job and live there but that went down the drain real quick didnt it!!

  • Something I don't like is the smug look on this guy's face.

I want to wipe it off with my fist.

  • lol caaaaaalm down....

  • Folks from illinois are far from calm.

  • So do u think this will get built, ever?

  • Comment removed

  • I knew there were risks in constructing massive buildings, but I didn't know it was this bad! I guess Emaar got incredibly lucky with their Burj Dubai.

  • Yo, I was appalled by your efforts to discredit someone that called you out. Not sure why being a first timer diminishes the validity of my point. I guess it was not that lame otherwise you wouldn't be all over this.

You just outed yourself as what you are. A PAID TOOL!

BTW: Trying to bully people with insults doesn't make you any more credible. And I will not take your bait. Over and out.

  • I've got a long record out there and only anonymous trolls have ever suggested that I could be bought.

I note that you don't answer my question: who are you, anyway, and what are your motives?

I note, again, that YouTube closed the account that you're so appalled I questoned.

  • It's no secret that McLean's MCL is one of our advertisers in some of our media programs. That doesn't affect the facts here.

Respond to this simple point: McLean has nothing for sale or on the drawing boards that would compete with the Spire.

And who are you, by the way? Probably another name for the Monocle8431 account that YouTube closed, since your account is new today. Anyone can see how lame your position is and how badly your slimy game reeks.

  • Crain's Chicago Business front page from February 23,2009 sure makes it look like Monocle8431 was right on the money with his comment.

I think it's time for YoChicago1 to come clean here for attacking him.

He seems to post a lot about Chicago Real Estate on You Tube.

    Getting paid by McLean, Yo?

  • monocle8431 joined YouTube today - probably for the sole purpose of taking this cheap shot for undisclosed purposes. Come clean on your interest in this topic, please.

  • I read that the Spire guys sold 30% and the $40 Million Penthouse too. And that this "expert" developer that calls them dead is up to his eyeballs in lawsuits with his own projects. Seems like someone is just trying to shift the attention to a competitor. What a cheap shot.

    Go Spire!

  • If you knew much of anything you'd know that a) McLean is not "upt o his eyeballs" in lawsuits even though he's involved in some litigation and b) he isn't building anything that competes with The Spire. The Spire's in an entirely different price range from McLean's nearby projects.

You're the one who's taken a cheap shot at a developer who's built billions (yes, billions) of dollars worth of real estate. And your expertise, pray tell?

  • I agree it doesn't have a chance. It would cost upwards of $2 billion to complete and never be profitable. Kelleher tried to market it as a "work of art by Calatrava" to justify astronomical prices and counted on a weak dollar to lure in foreign buyers. But in the end he could only pre-sell 30% of the building after a 6 month tour of 5 continents. First signs of trouble were early last summer when he implied he was open to converting a portion of the building to rental units.

    It's dead.

  • Best news I've heard all day. Every recession has a silver lining.

  • it's a unique building. Ive been following the progress of it

  • Its a shame it may never be built.

  • Sadly, i think this man is right.
