the merkava also has an anti-air capability and a smoke-screen feature. I am not an expert in tanks but even if the leopard has hose capabilities, just the fact that the merkava uses the TROPHY system ("windshield" in hebrew) makes it a lot safer than the leopard.

well the merkava mk.4 project was finshed in 20002 but the trophy was finshed in 2005 and they only stated to use it in 2008 but the flars are still vary use lets say thet there is a problem with trophy or it can also alow the tank to "play dead"

Well, you have to consider that merkava has some advantages which other tanks don't have. It has a hatch in the back, which can help the crew evacuate if the tank is damaged or enable easy entering of wonded fighters, or help carried fighters get out of the tank and join quickly the battle, it uses the most advanced anti-RPG missile systems, it has very thick armor but still much power speed and accuracy, and it's designed to ensure the crew will survive no matter how it is hit.

Tanks only good when they're on the open field or in an all out armor attack like in the past with the 6 days war when thousand of tanks from both side had engaged and destroyed.But in the invasion into Lebanon in the recent years,the Merkava has suffered a big lost.33 tanks were hit by the new Russian made antitank missile and 2 were destroyed by road side bomb in result of 33 soldiers killed!Tanks are not intended for urban warfare!just like the Abrams are almost useless in Iraq today.Cheer!

In many ways you are right about tanks in general. Their abilities do work best in the open field. But tanks can also provide good support in urban warfare as well. They can be used to give cover to troops while advancing, and they can also break through tough enemy obstacles/strongholds so that the troops can easily over take their positions.

They can also knock out sniper positions in a building; and provide strong cover-fire for the troops. Tanks can seriously turn the tables in urban.

You are entitle to your own views, but when the Irasrel tried to rescuse only "2 of their own soldiers" and lost that amount of tanks and soldiers. To me, that is not winning by any definition at all. When you fight an urban warfare, it is hard to tell who was who even with the infantries, let along tank! and the proofs have shown in Iraq and Lebanon!

I didnt say Israel won or lost, I said Tanks can possibly give victory in the battlefield, in a general sense.

And yes. Lebanon was filled with citizens who had rpg's and citizens you didnt. So it was obviously very hard to see who the enemy was, and thats probably why 33 Israeli tanks got destroyed; From confusion, and trying not to kill the wrong civilians while being attacked by enemies who LOOKED like civilians. Hesbollah isnt a conventional army where you can tell tell who is who.

So in truth, tanks aren't only good in the field. They can be very significant in urban settings as well.

It's true Israel may have lost 33 tanks in Lebanon because of anti-tanks missiles,rpg's, and tank mines; but the same thing can happen in the open field as well. The only difference is that Urban settings are more closed in, so it's alittle more risky. But that doesnt mean tanks dont belong in urban battles.

Using tanks can mean the difference between losing & winning in a battle.

Good point, and I think there is a reason why Israel hasn't lost any of the tanks in Gaza so far, since artillary has blown up the known tank booby traps, the tanks are now VERY feared among Hamas who intend to fight the infantry IDF. Surprise, here comes the Merkeva 4!
