I've tried it in sitting in my truck and in my car. cant do it without smashing my face into the stereo console and can only just touch the top of the pedal. If the pedal is depressed, that's another 3 inches. Unless you have chimp length arms, there's no way to reach the pedal and pull up unless you pull your entire body down and to the side.Try that at 90 miles an hour. and he was afraid to shift to neutral. The car has computers that prohibit certain things while the car is moving. Like using reverse, and park are examples.
It was suggested to the runaway Prius driver to put the car in neutral, or turn of the ignition, or even put the car in reverse. I ask you: If you were in the same position, would do either of the above, KNOWING that all steering control or the engine, would have locked up and rendered the car inoperable. Even if the car did slow down eventually, without the aid of the steering, grave consequences would have been inevitable. I do agree with the driver for not doing the above.

Even so, the emergency/parking brakes should've been an obvious option. Also, he should know to switch to neutral. In a Prius, you can just slide the gearshift up to neutral or even reverse (no need to press the brakes to do so).

At lunch today I decided to test out shifting into Neutral while holding the accelerator on my '08 Prius.
I got the car up to 60 (yes they do go that fast and faster), then slammed on the accelerator, waited a couple of seconds, then, simultaneously, held the shift knob in Neutral. After 1 second, the Prius immediately began slowing with the engine revving.

No it can't lock it. You can most definitely shift into neutral at any speed, and go into drive at any speed. It won't damage anything. At least not with my car. I drive like that all the time. I use gravity down hill. Engine idles, and I am doing like 60mph, and if traffic appears all of sudden, no big deal, just put it in drive. It finds the right gear every time. If Subaru 4wd can do it, and I am sure Prius can do that too, its cvt.
I know it cant lock while driving, but for some reason it does. A recorded 911 call from a guy driving his family in a Toyota was put on the radio and he was in such panic and he was saying how he couldnt get the car into neutral. I dunno, maybe its something in Toyota's that doesnt allow it or something
Maybe during that sudden acceleration problem, but usually yes you can shift into NEUTRAL at any speed and back to Drive at any speed. I just searched for videos and there is one woman with Prius doing that. Search for PRIUS NEUTRAL on google, and a few results down, there is a woman demonstrating that you can shift to neutral in Prius, just like in any other car. Now maybe when the car goes out of control, it somehow disables shifting, but I doubt it.

His break fluid had to have boiled (rendering it almost useless). He stated he reached down to grab the accelerator pedal and couldn't budge it. I've tried it in sitting in my truck and in my car. cant do it without smashing my face into the stereo console and can only just touch the top of the pedal. If the pedal is depressed, that's another 3 inches. Unless you have chimp length arms, there's no way to reach the pedal and pull up unless you pull your entire body down and to the side.Try that at 90 miles an hour. and he was afraid to shift to neutral. B.S.

@DIZZNDAT28 Not if you shut the engine down, and then immed put the key back into the ignition position, the position before start, where the lights come on, the steering will be heavy but will not be locked, you can then easily click it into neutral as well. This guy is a FRAUD, plain and simple. The BRAKE PADS already PROVED he did not "stand on" the brakes. He's a Filthy LIAR with an Agenda, or maybe he just thought Toyota would simply pay him off to go away.

Also , a light car like that, if you stand on the brakes, eventually you will slow down, and then you can LOCK THE rear tires and skid to a stop. From 50 mph down, you can skid no problem.
Survival instincts take over, NO WAY youre gonna count on 911 to help you. Your in survival mode, and you WILL make it happen, This guy did NONE of that.

@solidr1Once before he had this incident, I tried putting the prius in neutral while moving, the computer won't let you. Try turning car off while moving, the computer won't let you. The car has computers that prohibit certain things while the car is moving. Like using reverse, and park are examples.

It was suggested to the runaway Prius driver to put the car in neutral, or turn of the ignition, or even put the car in reverse. I ask you: If you were in the same position, would do either of the above, KNOWING that all steering control or the engine, would have locked up and rendered the car inoperable. Even if the car did slow down eventually, without the aid of the steering, grave consequences would have been inevitable. I do agree with the driver for not doing the above.

Sounds like a case of STUPID to me. He was going at 94mph and he had to to be chatting w/ the 911 dispatcher! LOLOL!!!! sigh... Should I "like" or "dislike" this video? Should I be in favor of Driver's Ed. every few years? I know they guy was probably nervous if there really was a problem, but... the Prius, even with its electric engine, is not powerful enough to overpower the brakes. Even so, the emergency/parking brakes should've been an obvious option. Also, he should know to switch to neutral. In a Prius, you can just slide the gearshift up to neutral or even reverse (no need to press the brakes to do so).

At lunch today I decided to test out shifting into Neutral while holding the accelerator on my '08 Prius.
I got the car up to 60 (yes they do go that fast and faster), then slammed on the accelerator, waited a couple of seconds, then, simultaneously, held the shift knob in Neutral. After 1 second, the Prius immediately began slowing with the engine revving.

No it can't lock it. You can most definitely shift into neutral at any speed, and go into drive at any speed. It won't damage anything. At least not with my car. I drive like that all the time. I use gravity down hill. Engine idles, and I am doing like 60mph, and if traffic appears all of sudden, no big deal, just put it in drive. It finds the right gear every time. If Subaru 4wd can do it, and I am sure Prius can do that too, its cvt.

I know it cant lock while driving, but for some reason it does. A recorded 911 call from a guy driving his family in a Toyota was put on the radio and he was in such panic and he was saying how he couldnt get the car into neutral. I dunno, maybe its something in Toyota's that doesnt allow it or something

Maybe during that sudden acceleration problem, but usually yes you can shift into NEUTRAL at any speed and back to Drive at any speed. I just searched for videos and there is one woman with Prius doing that. Search for PRIUS NEUTRAL on google, and a few results down, there is a woman demonstrating that you can shift to neutral in Prius, just like in any other car. Now maybe when the car goes out of control, it somehow disables shifting, but I doubt it.

So, trying to figure this out, a guy driving a Prius while wearing a Corvette Jacket, has acceleration issues... I'm thinking maybe it was planned. However assuming his story is factual. His break fluid had to have boiled (rendering it almost useless). There were no strait aways (not mentioned in this video) so holding down his power button for 3 seconds wouldn't be safe (it makes steering / breaking manual) Shifting into neutral didn't work (not mentioned in video) I can't figure that one out.
