What a joke; she's been a model prisoner; she lives in the general population of medium security; but I guess they felt for the cameras and everyones safety, she needed to be handcuffed. It just shows you how they like to pump this shit up.
In my opinion, Leslie should be released. She's old, she's regretful and she's no danger to society - she was brainwashed like most of the young girls, and they were all poor souls at those times. I don't know, I just feel, that many many people could be in the same situation as these people were in - they were all runaways, lost, didn't know where to go, manipulated with, a lot of teenagers now and weak people - could be brainwashed exactly like those were... well.. that's my thought, at least
what is with you Manson lovers those poor victims died and you people cry for all the murderers gimme a break. We are equal opportunity haters when it comes to the Manson family they killed a pregnant woman. Hope she suffers too.
Leslie in handcuffs, what an apt title for this video. I wonder if she's still subjected to strip searches? She must be used to the routine after 38 years. She pulled up Rosemary LaBianca's clothing and exposed her bare buttocks to stab her 16 times so what can she expect.
You really are a pillar of good will, aren't you? Why the hostility? Is it just Van Houten that you dislike so intensly or are you an equal opportunity hater?
remember she was originaly sentenced to death which is what should have happened to her. all of them were sentenced to death and yet these animals live. where the hell is the justice in that?
oh boy!!! if they get life without parole for slaughtering people.why do nixon and kissinger walk free to this day.i guess 1 million dead vietnamese people are just not the same as 7 dead americans.
the public opinion shocked with drugged hippies going on a killin spree.but hey droppin tons of bombs on civilians is a o.k. go figure
Every civilian making, transporting, and storing munitions and war material is certainly a target. --And every industrial civilian worker. When an iron foundry is bombed, the civilian workers are part of the target.
Well, if we're to stick to current criminals rather than 'ancient history' as you put it, then why are you still talking about Leslie Van Houten? At least she was brought to justice unlike the aforementioned politicians.
Although handcuffed, she's not being hooded, gagged, strangled, mocked, punched, knifed to death, or mutilated. She has been allowed to be alive. What's she have to complain about?
According to the case Stephen Kay presented the court in 1978, it was murder during the course of a robbery. A robbery of chocolate milk and cheese. Oh and a pair of shorts. Darn, that'd be the biggest loot in history...
The hood, the lampcord, holding her down for Tex to slice her, the 14 to 16 stab wounds to the lower back (dead or not dead)...they entered that home and terrorized those people and now it's but they only got milk and cheese. Good grief. She did nothing to help Rosemary...she did nothing to help Leno...she wanted to go...she felt left out of the Tate killings...she wiped off fingerprints. She had three trials and she has led a productive life in prison and that's where she belongs.
When you're young and reckless, sometimes you stupid things without realizing just how serious things can get. When a person is trying to "Fit In" with a group, you feel like you want to prove yourself. Leslie getting in the car and wanting to make it look like shes one of the gang probably had alot to do with her intentions for wanting to go. I believe that she Never intended on murdering anyone. Again, she made a terrible choice.
Well she sure didn't think they were going there for a tea party. Charlie told Tex not to make it so sloppy this time and make sure everyone participates. LVH has said herself that she knew murder would take place. It wasn't about fitting in; it was about killing for Charlie, igniting Helter Skelter. Even Linda Kasabian told Charlie "I'm not like you, I can't kill." Many left, and LVH could have left also. It was only the inner core that stayed and killed. Do your homework.
What you know, you read from a book. That's all i'm going to say on that subject. I don't have to do my homework, I already graduated. Read into that what you will.
Good for you. Let me know when you figure it all out. This is my last reply as this thread is starting to bore me. Why don't you go and purchase a copy of the 2006 parole hearing. I hear it's for sale now. It didn't take long for someone to cash in on the opening left by Bill Nelson. I wonder if the clown that runs the website gives a kickback to the victims' family members. I'm willng to bet he doesn't.
A book? Try again. And doing 'homework' on this has nothing to do with graduating. But how typical, and not unlike some of the other illogical, uninformed, and absurdly naiive comments already made.
What I know is fact. I am not answering with emotion, i.e. "I believe" or making broad generalizations and guesses about "fitting in." The debate over LVH is filled with opinions not always supported by fact; however, evidently even the parole board, 16 times now, apparently cannot set aside the horrifying and despicable facts of her crimes and the reality those facts speak is what has kept her in prison all these years...
The facts of the case are quite obvious as they've been kicked around for almost 38 years now, but the "why" is something that you know nothing about and probably never will. You know nothing about me so don't assume that i don't know what i'm talking about.
I don't have to assume, your opinion is clear to read, so no assumptions are necessary, at least not on my part. Otoh, you've made several broad assumptions about my knowing 'the why', where I get my information, among others. As for knowing nothing about you, I'm replying to your comments here. Replies are invited and are not predicated on knowing someone. So...just the facts ma'm. It's a tad ironic that you know nothing about me either but you continue to make assumptions. :) See ya.
I was simply trying to make a point about Les being used for camera play in that video. It just seems over the top. She presents no danger to anyone. As for my name, let's just say that its a link to my past that has long since been forgotten.
I don't see where Ms. Van Houten is being treated disrespectfully. She is a prisoner and prisoners wear handcuffs and shackles. I'm glad she's participated in all of the programs offered and received an exceptional education with impeccable behavior while in prison. However,shackles...even 37 years later, are a small price for the lamp cord, pillowcase and murderous acts of violence committed against the LaBiancas. She is where she belongs for the rest of her natural life.
Something that I think is very unfair in Leslie's parole hearings, is that when the judges come back after deliberating, they always bring up the Tate murders as if they played a role in her being found unsuitable for parole.
She wasn't there at the Tate house. She should only be judged in her participation in the LaBianca murder. Nothing more.
All of the hellaciousness of the Tate murder should never come up at her hearing.
Though I agree she should be judged for her participation in the LaBianca crimes, there is testimony to the fact that LVH claimed at the time to have wished she had been involved in the Tate murders and that she felt 'left out.' I believe had life without the possibility of parole been an option 36 years ago, that is what she would have deserved for her participation in the LaBianca crimes.
On their return to the ranch, the Tate killers talked in gory detail about the murders. Just hours later, when LVH went with the others to the LaBiancas, she knew what to expect; she knew why they were going there; she knew what the others had just done the night before! She is not being judged by any "participation" in the Tate killings; she is being judged her knowledge of her co-defendants' participation in the Tate killings and her own participation in the LaBianca killings.
Leslie made a bad choice. That goes without saying. Leslie felt the need to prove herself and my belief is that her having gone out that night was her way of participating. I don't believe that she ever intended to kill anyone as proven when Tex Watson had to insist that Leslie "Do Something". At one point, she was wiping off fingerprints while Pat and Tex were in the room with Rosemary.
Those kids said alot of things back then. They were all full of lies and boastings.
It's why Susan Atkins is still being accused of things I believe she didn't in fact do. She boasted to shock people into seeing her as some frightening, powerful thing in prison. When in reality, she was kind of a screw up.
All of the girls said they wanted to go, etc. It was a part of their act. It doesn't mean it was necessarily true. Because truth had no meaning to them. It was only a word they played with.
What disturbs me is that people seem to place Leslie in the same role as Tex Watson and Patricia Krenwinkel. Leslie has never been prone to violence and remember that it was only the night before that Patricia Krenwinkel slaughtered Abigail Folger while Tex Watson murdered Sharon Tate, Voyteck, Jay and Steven Parent. I don't believe that Leslie sensed the gravity or reality of what took place. Her role in the LaBianca house was as a support person.
Support person? Okay. She and Katie placed Rosemary face down on the bed, tied a pillowcase over her head with the cord of a heavy lamp, listened to the terrified screams and begging and did nothing as Leno was being murdered by Tex, held her down while Krenwinkle stabbed. Stole and wore Mrs. LaBianca's clothes, stole and ate food out of the refrigerator, wiped down the fingerprints. All acts of "support" worthy of conviction and sentencing for life. And then the stabbing...
There's no reason for her to be treated like that. It almost seems as if it's done just to play it up for the cameras. I'm outraged that she's allowed to be abused like that it front of the cameras and she's put in a position where she can't even object to the treatment without anything she says being held against her.
And then to think she was walking to court unshackled and unchained during the '71 trial, with guards following a couple of feet behind. And I dare to bet she could run much faster back then! ;)
Disgraceful. Do you think there are enough police officers there to keep her under control? There's no excuse for that kind of an excessive show of force especially for a woman who's been a model prisoner for her entire incarceration. It makes the American legal system look like its managed by clowns that have no idea of how to manage people.
I'm not seeing an 'excessive show of force' ??? I'm seeing a woman with a tentative, cautious look walking carefully in shackles and police or correctional officers walking alongside her, as they should. She is a prisoner. They aren't 'handling' or approaching her with any force whatsoever. Clowns? This woman participated in a violent, grotesque, and senseless murder. She stabbed a woman 16 times IN THE BACK. She is a prisoner.
5 burly looking men escorting one women who's shackled looks excessive to me. She was arrested for something that happened almost 40 years ago. She's not dangerous at all and this parade gives off the impression that she is when shes not. I only wish our airports had that kind of security.
She was arrested 37 years ago and her final convictions were 30 years ago; she had three trials, certainly receiving fair justice. Regardless, the length of time makes no difference in prison policy and procedure. She says she doesn't know what more she can do to convey her remorse. Give her freedom, that's what she can do. Restitution. It's about the need for placing value on the lives of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca, and that need does not diminish because it is nearly 40 years later.
Leslie had nothing to do with the death of Leno LaBianca. What happened to Rosemary is inexcusable but, based on Leslie's actual role, I believe that she has paid her debt to society. Charles Denton Watson and Patricia Krenwinkel killed Rosemary and Leno. Leslie had to be told to "do something". It's not excusing what she did but i do think it shows that murder was not her objective.
Why? Because she didn't plunge the knife into him? She was there, she did nothing to stop it, she heard him being murdered and did nothing! And the autopsy revealed that several of the wounds to Rosemary's back in and of themselves could have been fatal. LVH has said herself she can't be certain that Rosemary was already dead and the M.E.'s findings confirmed that. Good grief. By her own admission, she knew full well murder was going to occur that night.
By separating and hooding Rosemary, Van houten made sure that the LaBiancas couldn't help each other. Van Houten hooded and tethered Rosemary so that her coming struggle for her life would be hopeless and onesided, and so that she couldn't even get away. Van Houten made sure Rosemary couldn't come out of it alive.
Almost 10 years gone and still in jail. Thank you California.

How did Van Houten treat Mrs. LaBianca when she was in HER custody?
Did Van Houten have a heart and give Mrs LaBianca a break? --Let Mrs LaBianca out?
No, she (and Manson, Krenwinkel, and Tex) saw to it that the LaBiancas died hearing each other being knifed.
