@nameless12345 apparently some dude working on the movie who is also a scientist, did some chemical reactions in a petri dish. they filmed it changed the contrast and colour and stuck it in the movie.
Damn this stupid comment mechanism...I was trying to reply to who said nothing was distinctive about the effects. They did not use any CGI, except for color tinting, animating the space bubble, and blue-screen compositing of the images (like you see here). It is "groundbreaking" because everything you see on the film was shot with a camera, using microphotography. This video doesn't really show much of it, but what makes the film unique is the microphotography & the black / gold color scheme.
I love the film and they did a wonderful job on the effects with their small budget but I wouldn't call the effects groundbreaking. These aren't really considered new techniques for a film made in 2006.
@TekLok I don't know who used the word "groundbreaking", but perhaps they used the wrong "superlative" in their attempt to convey their feelings of awe at the sheer beauty of this film?
Whether the techniques are new or old is irrelevant! What matters is how they were used... and how indeed!
@TekLok -- No CGI was used, except for color tinting, animating the space bubble, and blue-screen compositing of the images (like you see here). It is, actually, "groundbreaking" because everything you see on the film was shot with a camera, using microphotography. This video doesn't really show much of it, but what makes the film unique is the microphotography and the black and gold color wash.
The joke's on you-Dr Seuss spent a great deal of time and effort in his books and for however childish they seem, they were actually based in fairly deep issues-The Butter Battle was about the cold war and Yertle the Turtle was parallel to dictatorship. Pi was a good novel, but this is still magnificent art.
It's an allegory. Essentially, a person feels like he lives an interminable existence after his wife dies. He obsesses over the fact that he couldn't prevent it and spends the rest of his life wishing he'd done things differently, constantly living in the past.
At the end of the movie, he comes to term with what has happened, his interminable existence ends.
With that said, you won't become immortal upon the death of a loved one. It'll only feel that way.
For me it is not so much about different times, future, past, present, but more about different dimensions of reality.and how to deal with dead and the search for everlasting life.
The outer reality, scientific and rational
The book, the land of fantasy and dreams
The meditative state
And at the end he "dies" in his meditation and becomes a part of the whole again.
But that is only my perspective...what ever you see in the movie will be true for you!
You'll notice how the tree and her, and him (through all times) are the same persons... and he strives for the same, just with different names. Then perhaps you can make your own opinion of it. For me it's about loss (of a loved one).
This movie was absolutely amazing. My favorite!! it tells the story in 3 different ways; past, present, and future all at the same time. which is why its kinda hard to keep up with. but wow the visual effects are really awesome... these people are too smart.
@Tanru2000 This song is my favourite its called Together We Will Live Forever. it makes me think about all the things ive seen and done in my life, its amazing.
those aren't any groundbreaking effects, but rather very artistic visions beautifully executed with techniques that have been around for 20 years, such as greenscreening and wet for dry and vise versa, dry for wat like they did in the Lord of the Rings films during all the underwater scenes, but still very beautiful and artistic
I was thrown back when I saw people leaving at the showing of the movie, Guess all they can comprehend is hulk and the like. but this was a smooth movie. Death is a disease just like any other.
I think i could be because it helps to seperate the actor from the green screen that much more. It makes it easier to key out the green screen with no green reflective lighting bouncing onto the actor. Its easierh to color correct it back to normal than it is to make a tighter matte around the talent. Just my two cents, I could be completely wrong =P
I think you are right. using gelled lighting to illuminate a subject in a complex compositing shot is a standard method for helping isolate the subject from the background.
They are filming it under water with blue screen background - all that blue light is bouncing off him. Its incredible how well they color corrected it though. The keying would have been difficult for that shot since so much blue light is spilling onto the actor.
I think I've never felt so moved watching a movie like when I saw The Fountain. It's overwhelming. Honestly it's hard for me to understand how Darren Aronofsky put all this together. Everything in this film is great: from the plot to the acting and the music. Simply brilliant. Makes me want to make a movie too (which always happens to me when I see something extraordinary... a movie, a book, etc)
the song is called "stay with me" and i can listen to music like that all day. most times id rather listen to music like this instead of and other. it evokes greater emotion.

It should be noted that Clint Mansell produces the best scores for film - period.
Requiem for a Dream
The Fountain
Yes, both DA films, but he is quite the composer and only adds vlaue to DA's films.

Haven't listened too much to Mansell's works, but Philip Glass is my favorite composer. He's made many really good ones for film.
