I learned Kunfu for over 6 years, and i learned some sword skills as well, and let me tell you, THERE IS NO WAY that the sword will make noise as loud as this. Is true that they will have swish noise when u swing them, but not this loud.
people who know very little about broadsword it makes noise its not very stiff and rigid when swung correctly u will hear it cut the air and hear its bending so its not all sound effects added in.
@atomaboy Which is presumably why they are exactly the same pitch and amplitude even when the footage is in slow motion...? Look at around 40-50 seconds in. He is not making those sounds.
@Cheeseitnow those actually aren't sound effects! sorry if this was a joke, but broadswords, when used properly by a master, actually do make that sound when the tips bend and snap back into place
@realityismyreligion Sir. you are wrong. im guessing you dont do kung fu either. ive been training with broadsword forms for a few years now, and any kind of broadsword does NOT make that sound, the sounds you hear are fake -_- u hear them in movies too
ive read some where he accedently cut himself on the cheek (not sure wich side) during one of his exhibitions early in his career with the broad sword if you look closely at his face in some of his movies you can see the scar
only when theyre being stabbed... when theyre slashed they have to be stopped abruptly so send the energy moving to the tip where the sound are being made.
that does look goofy but thats because its probably drunken style. it looks very wild and uncoordinated but its practiced and intentional movements. =]
If you've ever swung a wushu steel sword, that's exactly how it sounds. Looks like you need to stop watching martial arts videos and start practicing one ;)
Also, to address this video, Jet Li moves beautifully! So quick and almost...passionate? Its really impressive. So wild in appearance at times, but then they slow it down and you can see practiced intention. I just hate the corny sound effects. He's using a foil for the first demo scenes, so it won't make the proper cutting sounds, so they inserted them, but ughhh. BTW, anyone have any links to good chinese polearm demos? Can't find too many really nice ones...
My Gosh this guy will kick my ass in seconds! XDDD He is a pretty good fighter, but Im actually curious to see Bruce Lee VS Jet Li VS Jackie Chan VS Tony Jaa, to me; that'll be the fight of the century >:)
lmao, of course it looks lame, but in Wushu and most Kung fu, those spring steel blades are far far lighter, and they use those swords mostly for form competetion sake. personally i agree, i don't like the springsteel floppiness and ridiculously lightweight, but oh well.
yep! its a typical wushu broadsword. personally I wouldnt fight with it in a war. Cause then I would be worried about getting laughed at rather than getting killed! lol.
Ok I got a question: there's this movie with a very young Jet Li starring in it, he wears a black suit with approx. 6 big buttons on it. In the beginning of the movie he battles a communist soldier with his belt, after that you get to see some amazing acrobatic shit from him :p in the rest of the movie there is thi Russian fighter, who looks like Jean-Claude Van Damme who acts like a friend of Jet Li in the movie. My question: what is the title? The fake dvd package says "Fist Of Legend 2" XD
Jet Li was the world wushu champion when he was younger, there was no one that came close to him at one point. Richard Nixon even offered for him to be his personal body guard, this was before he became an actor of course. But even as a kid he was the world wushu (mixed martial arts) champion.
If training Dao used with even not-so-much skill, it makes sounds as well, but more like a metal sheet wobbling sound when it's point wobbles. Great vid when muted :P
Btw, u can cut with the tip side of the training Dao, since it's thinner at the tip, so don't do any joke-fighting with it.
it's a chinese broadsword, also known as a Chinese Dao-Blade, it's used in most martial arts movies and demos, you can probably find videos on here, somewhere, the blade he's using is made out of impact steel, or 'spring steel' given because of it's tendancy to return to it's original shape, no matter how much abuse it recieves, what a nice invention! I like the whooshy noises :3
I have respect for the Asian martial arts but I prefer the European martial arts. As my favorite sword is the Longsword which is highly underrated as it is as heavy as a katana and is longer and has 2 cut sides but it depends on the sword user after all.

Fiore Di Libre was a 15th century Italian swordsmen, he's left behind manuals for his studied style of fencing (especially the long sword)& these texts are used to teach his traditional style in our day. personally i study george silver's style but i must say this video is very impressive..Eastern martial forms always look so graceful when performed by a master..
even though I am Japanese, I dont fully agree with you on that one. Knights of Europe depending on what country are also well trained with swords and can block many swift attacks. It also depends on the sword being used.
You have no basis for your claims. There are no recorded battles or even small skirmishes between fully armed/trained knights, and equivalent samurai. Besides, it would depend on WHICH part of Europe the knights derived from and which era it took place during. You're clearly just showing biases. Both cultures' warriors were very formidable.
