love this record so much. cool performance here! on the album version, the strings are so integral to that build-up to the chorus, that I swear I can hear them here! that's just great arranging! these guys are pure class. thanks for the post, friend.
@shovingwords I think it's an instrument called a güiro that your hearing. It sounds like it's a percussion part for the chorus and continues throughout.
@tim498cc I can't hear it myself (high frequency loss, I suppose), but I know that a lot of people can. Norman Blake has confirmed that the percussive sound is actually an autoharp.
why, when I listen to this on record, do I hear what I can only describe as "interference" around 48-50 seconds in? It happens around the key change. I've downloaded the album from play.com, downloaded that particular track separately from play, downloaded illegally using torrent and downloaded the track from a fansite. they all sound the same. Do you all hear this in the recorded version? cheers.
@sexyaccident hi. not on this live version. it's right before the "baby lee..." chorus. there's a key change met with a "crackle" of interference. It's really put me off the track. the more I listen to it the more I think it may just be a... It's clearly a part of the record but it bugs me. ha. love the record though.
@shovingwords I know the crackle that you're talking about, at first I thought it was my headphones. It must be part of the song but I was wondering why they would do that, it is annoying. That said, it's an amazing song.
Scottlands finest! The Fannies are just popgeniuses! "Sparky´s Dream", "Ain´t That Enough", "I Need Direction" and now this! Greetings from Stockholm Sweden

It appears they had a stand in for Raymond here. It's a great version and even with the guitar solo flub.

@shovingwords I don't hear it! There is a color chord (probably a maj-7th) right there. Is that what you're hearing?

@shovingwords Oh, I knew you meant on the recorded version. I went and listened to it and couldn't hear any distortion. Will listen again.
