umm make sure you have the latest version of itunes and if that doesnt work degrade itunes. Sometimes running blackra1n might work subscribe if worked!!!
for the window users xp or other window,what you have to do is us system recover and when you done you d install service pack 2or3 and install itunes.and when you in system recovery mode on your computer do not close it while ist in the middle of it.now restore your ipod if a new error pop all you have to do it close ur ipod and open and replug to the computer and there u go if any problem with windows email me
well i dont know if you want to do this but i had the same problem and i fixed it by downgrading firmware by dfu mode if your on 3.1.2 downgrade to 2.2.1 or lower because i had problems on 3.0 try it

Don't give up! I can help!
My iPhone had that symbol also.
1) Put into DFU mode.
2) Plug the phone to your computer
3) Download a program called RecBoot (google it)
4) When you click restore on iTunes and you get that message, click cancel or ok to remove that message.
5) Open up RecBoot and press "kick me out of recovery"
Then your phone should be restoring back to normal again!
