oh! that was simpler than i thought it was going to be. Im about to experiment a little with felts; could you not just use a sewing needle to do that?

No. A sewing needle will not work. You need felting needles that have barbs on them. The barbs catch the fibers as you are pushing the needle in and tangle it so that you end up with felt.
