I hate people who on every single rowing video complain that the people who are rowing are doing something wrong. The fact is that it takes decades to perfect your stroke, and in fact maybe you can never reach perfection. Everyone has something to improve on, so go get every single little tiny detail absolutely perfect in your stroke before complaining about other people's rowing.
I'm amazed at the anger and beligerent attitudes all about a spot that is simply using the example of listening to the voice of the coxswain in rowing as an analogy to listen to God's voice in life. It's an ANALOGY, not a perfect comparison, because there IS no perfect comparison to listening to the voice of God. But we did use a real rowing team with a real coxswain to make the spot. C''mon people. Give it a rest. God loves all of us.
@FallFollies2010 Yes there is... the perfect analogy is called schizophrenia. If you have voices in your head and listen to them and claim they are God then you sir are ridiculous
I dont know about you guys, my tunnel vision during a sprint race, i can vaguely remember any parts of the race at all after it's said and done. I may "listen" during the race but I'm not exactly hearing them during the race.
I'm in a sort of zone, where even god's voice himself cannot break me out of it.
jayaveva, i row and this is my pastor, you do realize that he was just pointing out a simularity right, just cause he's not exactly right doesnt mean anything, yes its an extension of the coach but it was just a simularity, chill
@manofpopsicle516 Ugh tell me about it. This one girl I know was trying to pass herself off as a rower to impress some guys on my team. I think she might have ended up a little embarrassed when they told her the coxswain does NOT in fact, beat a drum in the boat.
@octembuary LOOOOOOOOOOOOL xDDD ever saw a rowing race(the girl) avoiding the fact that there prob wouldn't fit a drum in that space of a coxswain, to have the beat of a regatta one would be like a rock battery xD like 40+ beats(blade's strokes) per minute?xD
@TheHappygirls123 lool well, we need them in a race though... (if rowing 4 or 8 or some cox pair though not so common the pair...) but they shure help in training or so, its like having a personal coach for the boat (well for me &my boat) xD
Eugh, God through rowing, this is an insult, whats more those guys can't row properly! And the rowers don't steer, the cox steers and if need be round tight corners tells the rowers to ease off on bow/stroke side or apply more pressure on bow/stroke to bring the boat round.
@spitboi7 Every person in the boat, with the exception of the shot with Bryant Wright, is a professional rower, including and especially the coxswain.
"A rowing crew listens to the voice of the Coxswain to know where to steer and how fast to go." Not quite, a rowing crew doesn't have to bother with steering and you always know how fast to go: as fas as you can.
yeah i know they call bursts and round sharp bends one side may have to pull harder but in general all the cox does is steer and motivate in a race and maybe give a few technical calls on outings.
i am a cox we are very important because if any thing happens to the boat or the rowers it is our fault you try coxing and it is not as easy as it seems i use to think it looked easy when i rowed it is very frustruating when your crew does not listen or respect you
Jay, keep the split up, take the rate right down to about 10%...actually, just hold it up. You're arguing with yourself on you tube. Maybe you should get a job or a hobby or something...
By the way for your information ... this clip ... so called "Listening to the Coxswain's Voice " is NOT in any way an "instructional video." It was a very cheap and lazy attempt by the religious fascists to use something that is beyond religion for their own narrow minded goals.
If you really take a long hard honest look ... all "organized religions" ... whether it be christianity, islam, buddhism, hinduism, judaism or any other "ism" are all very sadly political, materialistic and devoid of any true spiritualism. Yes they is NO difference between any one of the so called organized religions when they are practiced by scared, terrified, insecure and sad individuals with the most inflated inferiority complexes.
As for me, during my pretty in-glorious rowing career I was a hard working "bow man" and a single sculler. I have also coxed many crews, mostly junior crews because that is how we passed on our rowing skills and knowledge as participants of a pure and simple amateur sport.
Well allenhuntsucks ... hope your are having a fine day and that this very light hearted banter on youtube might pique your interest to try out the "holy" sport of rowing .... lol. To hell with partisan and divisive religion!!!!! Curl your fingers around the oar handles ... sit tall ... look up towards the heavens and drive with your legs ...
Keep your back straight and strong and finish your powerful stroke with a neat and subtle flourish that would make any gymnist proud. Unleash the spirit inside you and be humbled and be made whole by the effort of your self and your crew!!!! Let the bleeding calluses on your hands and the boils on your ass purify your soul ..... lol!!! Row on ... no excuses!
The last time I checked there is NO Judeo-Christian "god" who would ever "listen" or take any "feedback" from the unfortunate/illiterate masses who are supposed to be "led". Therefore so please get off our boat docks and keep your materialistic marketing tactics out of ROWING. Thank you kindly!
A Rowing Coach will go over the training schedule with the coxswain AND all the rowers and if he is a GOOD coach he will make the effort to listen to feedback from the rowers and coxswains to modify/develop that particular schedule for that day.
Brian, I don't know if you've ever rowed or coxed or participated in a similar intense and satisfying communal/competitive life activity. When it comes to rowing you were NOT "talking from your heart". When you stated that "a rowing crew listens to the voice of the coxswain to know where to steer and fast to go" unfortunately your analogy is totally/shamefully wrong and/or deliberately misleading. The coxswain is just an extension of the Rowing Coach.
Having said that it is obvious that there are some coxswain with a "more than-rowing agenda" who would "approve (d) and verified the accuracy of this video spot" and you would swallow it hook line and sinker because you obviously have no clue about the delightful and entertaining psyche of a coxswain (a.k.a. god???). Please allow me to clarify and educate you Andy :
"And after God had created the earth and all the things that were in it, God created man and woman. They followed her command and were fruitful and multiplied.
Then God looked down upon the human race and sought out four strong humans: tall, lean, well-muscled, but not too bright. These four God called "the engine room".
One more human God found. An individual who had all the qualities of "the stroke" but one who could also follow and send a strong rhythm and will to those who in turn followed him. This individual God called simply "seven".
Now God faced the biggest challenge. God must find an individual who could control and lead these eight exemplary human beings. One who was cocky and confident with a loud voice and dominant bearing. God found no such human being, so God came to earth and took on the role of the coxswain.
And the eight human beings declared that the coxswain had a "God-complex".

I'll pass on the leadership stuff, napoleon complex garbage, and point out a secondary characteristic or two that coxes unintentionally inherit after riding in the box for a while.
They (coxswains) can't drive a car anymore. They take 10 miles to change a lane, oversteer, can't find the brakes, and yell to the car a lot. This has nothing to do with the coxes' former driving ability. Stick Richard Petty in a cox seat for a while, they'll take his drivers license away. Coxes also begin to squint a lot, no loss in vision, they just squint.
One; This guy plainly knows nothing about rowing. Rowers don't steer the boat according to the cox's instructions; the cox steers the boat.
Two; Most rowers hate coxes. What exactly is this crackpot trying to tell us?
