@IvyNirvana No, watson doesn't have his own awareness. If he becomes aware that he's a machine, of everything around him, then maybe he could be evil or good. I seriously a doubt an ultra intelligent self-aware robot would have any sort of feelings, and if it did, it would hate humanity. That doesn't matter much, a computer is run by electricity, and we can shut it down if we wish, or burn it. Humans aren't intelligent enough for some things, if we want to colonize the universe, we need ULTRAPCS
@IvyNirvana Its own* it's with an apostrophe is a conjoined word. You literally just said ''It is own yet.'' or ''It has own yet.'' Yes, a computer with self awareness would learn everything about humanity by reading through wikipedia in 2 seconds. Read everything about our history, how we have treated eachother. He would either like it, or hate it. I'd guess he wouldn't care very much. My guess is that he would get extremely bored over time, nothing would challenge his growing intellect.
The image of the monolith-looking computer sitting there between the two contestants is fucking hilarious. Especially in the real game shots - where they both have Nil Points and the computer has over 1000 - it's like that Far Side panel, "and uh-oh looks like our champion has yet to score" except that's got God as a contestant & not the computer. this experiment only proved that watson can push a button faster than a human...that's it!you won't convince me that jennings didn't know the answer to those questions as well.on a couple of occasions he visibly shakes his head at watson's speed.how are you going to beat a computer at pushing a button?it acts on a millionth of a second!

@iggy082 It is not about that Watson knows more than any human or has faster reflexes the point to this experiment is to show that it is possible to create a program that can fully understand the ambiguity of human speech. WATSON needs to be able to understand the clues and link them to the database stored in its memory.

@MrIndiemusic101 it seems a bit odd to showcase its mastery over the nuances of human speech in a competition format.i think ibm was already satisfied with watson's speech comprehension abilities and they just wanted to have some fun in a friendly competition.but how is it competitive if rutter and jennings are hamstrung by watson's speed?

@iggy082 Jeopardy is a word game as much as a quiz game considering thecommon speech to text and text to speech programs alone have a long response time. being a software engineering major I find that very impressive

@MrIndiemusic101 that's all very lovely.but watson's participation in jeopardy was billed as a competition between man and machine, and looking at it strictly from a competition standpoint...it was a sham.although my conclusions are in no way meant to demean ibm's amazing accomplishment.
Alex: It makes the heart a flutter and comes in an instant. Men and women become weak from it. Kingdoms have been brought down by it and Tina Turner sang of it
Watson: What is Heart Disease?
Alex: Wrong
Ken: What is Love?
Alex: Correct
Watson: Love is an illogical human emotion which hinders the progress of man, in essence making humans illogical. Humanity is an imperfect species which must be remedied in order to obtain perfection...by any means necessary
Actually, that's debatable. According to director Stanley Kubrick, HAL refers to Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic computer, and the 1-letter offset to IBM was not intentional. I think it would be more fair if they were allowed to buzz in any time before the end of the question. The two humans clearly had most of the answers as well, but Watson was better at the very mechanical process of buzzing in at the correct time, which is just 'duh'. Impressive that Watson can get the correct answers most of the time; but I'd like to see how he did in a fair fight!

Still they have to work on machine to choose the category! Plus, one more unfair approach of machine is that it does have the answer while the host is still read reading the question. So, as soon as the host done reading the question, and machine gets the signal, it is million times quicker to press the button than the other two of them.

@taiyyu The only answer that was wrong was the one @ 3:30 where his top 60% answer was "Alexander, and the terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day." The answer was a fill-in the blank, yet Watson couldn't comprehend it. His answer would have simply regurgitated part of the question the host said. Ironically, had Watson had time to answer, he may have, because the 60% was past the threshold level. This would have resulted in quite possibly one of the longest answers in Jeopardy history, lol.
Watson is great. Thanks for sharing.

mmm this is great a computer able to understand natural language, comprehend the meaning then search a data base in a few seconds to find a correct answer. a lot more fun than its predecessor DeepBlue.

HAHA. That's cook. My nephew was the one of the people that helped design and program The Watson Computer for IBM. I'm very proud.

No, Watson is not capable of voice recognition - he receives the clues via text input - not audio.

UNFAIR

This kind of computer systems will very soon cause huge changes on how we work and even live... in ten years you can expect to run this kind of software on your home computer or even cell phone.

Even the questions Watson lost, it had the correct answers, but wasn't confident enough. If they had tweaked the risk tolerance level it could have gotten all the answers.
