  • Most amazing lyricist of all time in my book!

  • I start to think and then I sink

Into the paper like I was ink

When I'm writing, I'm trapped in between the lines,

I escape when I finish the rhyme...

    I got soul

    That is the illest rhyme....EVER!!

  • N.Y.!!!

  • HIPHOP 2 DAY IS DEAD! It will NEVER EVER Get back to classic music like these days EVER!!!

  • The Greatest...of ALL TIME....

  • I`m trying not to get choked up but hip-hop has changed so much that the excitement that Rakim`s is generating to the crowd is so rare today that it`s a shame. I guess that`s why he MC`s(Moves the crowd).

  • This is what hip hop was based on...Real,lyrical skills unlike much of the garbage dudes is releasing nowadays....

  • G.O.A.T !!!!!

  • "I Know you got soul" was so futuristic when it came out. Nothing else sounded like it.

  • Rakim is the greatest lyricist to ever touch a mic, NOT Jay Z!!

  • gives me chills BIGTIME!!!!!!!

  • Anyone who slags off double denim needs to watch this, Rakim would look cool rhyming in a bin-liner! I was 11 when this was breaking in the UK, classic stuff, modern hip-hop just doesn't seem to cut it.

  • LYRICAL GENIUS...period.

  • Those were the best days. If I could turn back time, it will definitely be in the 80's & 90's.

  • @thegunclub123

    I've never heard him curse.

  • @thegunclub123 he swears in a few songs but really who cares?

  • @ThatIncredibleJordan-well i dont care sometimes it's necessary but in rap its usually a crutch. it says something when a rapper can be ill without cursing

    Real Hip Hop!!!

    Class of 1991!!!

  • why didn't he just flip it to the instrumentals? weak

  • well, that's the way the old school kats did it, man!

Plus, often the instrumentals were not available on vinyl-even for the artist.that hasn't changed to this day but I agree with you-I like a "real" live performance better than the dubbed ones

  • Is there a better line in hip hop then "Thought I was a doughnut tried to glaze me" I can't think of one. RA the best to ever do it.

  • Best of all time. The MJ of hip hop

  • yep, talented as no other, at times missunderstood and underrated, never got the TOTAL props he deserves...yep, kinda like the MJ of RAP

    THE God MC

  • Rap performers aint $hit compared to these cats back in the days!!!

  • IS that a DUKEY ROPE???? LOL!!!!

  • yep,its prolly hollow though,or rented for the show,

  • Rakim is my favorite mc of all time, but it was kinda disappointing to see him perform with a backing vocal track.

  • Dope..but his new lp is wack

  • tight upload!!

  • I remember this on "The Wood"! go Ro,go Ro! lol

  • Hyyype!

  • ...no tricks in '86, the greatest natural mc of all time!

well rakim and thought are neck and neck

  • I like the way you think!

  • I take seven mc's put em in a line/ and add 7 more brothers who think they can rhyme/ well it'll take 7 more before i go for mines/ now that's 21 mc's ate up at the same time. Classic Rakim. One of my favorite mc's.

  • Lip sync ?

  • doubt it.

  • I wish I was there that night. Damn! Rakim will always be the #1 MC to me. I don't care how much money Hova makes or what Tupac did or what biggie would have done. Rakim is the #1 MC forever!

  • there are no song out that can have a crowd going crazy like the president and i got soul...little kids take note...this real and true hip hop!

  • 1986 we gunna do it like this!!

  • I heard some rumors that Eric B. & Rakim may get back together. The reason why they both split as a duel. Is beacuse Island/4th & Broadway (now Island/Def Jam) wasn't paying the right cash flow. The record owed them a lot money. For doing thoughs albums. Thats why they (Island records) are being sued along with Rusesel Simmons (their former manager), by Eric B. & Rakim. For monies they owe them both.

  • Hi it's me the faggot lol! Even though you are a jerk I am still glad you shared that comment. I always felt they together were the most amazing Duo ever. Eric B was breat with his beats and Rakim is simply a Genius. Now I truly hate that prick Simmons cannot stand his freaky family but to think Rakim & Eric B were fucked over truly pisses me off I mean seriously, how are you going to do that to the most amazing hip-hop duo ever?? Russ Simmons is filthy rich the bastard OH I hate him.,

  • Just answer me this question..... Why would you call yourself, "Fruityblack"?! Are you gay, or something? Is that you a female? "I mean what?!"

  • Good Lord with all of the weird ass screennames out there and I keep getting grief for mine lol!!!! Just this week A guy sends me a comment saying " you must be a nigger faggot! What is wrong with you people????? I have tried to change the name because I am so fucking tired of the dumbass comments already,!Believe me I have tried to change it but for some reason You Tube makes it a pain in the ass to try and change it. I am just so sick and tired of the imature homphobic remarks.

  • Homophobic! Lets talk about that word for a second.....The word "Homophobia", means "Same Fear" (Homo - means "SAME", Phobia - means "FEAR"). Sotherefore, if you are implying. That i have the same fear, as a homosexual would. You are indeed sadly mistaken. So get that "Straight" in your head. Why don't you try and change your name again. You know, you can contact "Youtube" office directly by phone. To have them reset your username for you.

  • For such a "Genius" why don't you spend more time looking up the words judgement and compassion, Thank you so very much for the information on resetting my name but does that also mean I would lose all of the videos I have had as favorites over the two years I have used You Tube. For such a "smart'" person you are a real asshole I am not the one who made the imature comment about being a "sick faggot" you are homophobic you ass whipe. a pompus asshipe at that lol!

  • Why don't you just STOP with evilness! Just change your freakin' username! DAM!

  • this is my last comment because you are just not worth my time. You could learn alot from a mature person like kenmiller31 . You actually thik it's evil of me to say It was wrong of me to get so defensive or to say that I am sure both of us are better than making insults toward one another? The majority of poeple focus on the subject we are speaking on not the screenname so instead of getting offended I realize it just says more about those that feel the need to comment about a screen name.

  • Then why continue on sending me these ignorant messages? If, anyone is immature.....its you! So don't you think, that you should STOP sending any messages period? "Just ask yourself that question. "Alright?!" Your screenname sure sounds fuckin' gay!

  • i thought we were supposed to be talking about eric b & rakim here..lol

  • You need to have a coke and a smile! AND SHUT THE FUCK UP!!! BITCH!!!

  • Shut the fuck BITCH!!! And STOp sending me your worthless messages!!! I didn't ask you for your 5 & 10 cent!!!

  • Which part did you NOT understand BITCH?! I told your dumb ass to STOP messaging HOE! So Stop messaging me! I have already reported yo9u to the "Youtube" complaint dept. So they are already observing your annoying messages BITCH! So keep it up hoe!

  • Why do you even care about my screenname ?? Any why on earth would you make a comment "you sick faggot"I guess you are not homophobic just a jerk a judgemental person who makes reckless rude comments to people who have not even done anything to you, God you sicken me you judgemental shithead.

  • O'kay! Whatever you want to think FAGGOT!!!

  • Look why don't you whipe the cum stains off of your mouth stop molesting little girls and ask your mother if she wants you to give it to her up the ass again. The best part of you ran down your mothers leg and that was hard since she stands on four legs lol!!! You are the one who probably loves to get the tubesteak up the ass speaking of calling people Fags I don't care you can call me Faggot, nigger but at least I am not a cocksucking child molester like you. You are a stain filled cum rag.

  • I am gonna be the bigger person inspite of my imature angry comments I made just recently. I am sorry This is not what I am about. I am a straight woman who thinks that Eric Barrier and Rakim Allah(William Griffin) are the most brilliant duo alive. The first time I ever heard "Rap" I was high sittin in my friends car in NY (I am from SF) and I know you got soul came on the radio well It brought me out of my coked up trance to a higher level than any drug, It changed my life!!!

  • Well, if you are indeed a woman (so you say.....). So why don't you change your username to, "FruityblackWOMAN", or Fruityblack LADY". Something that, so to signafied who you are indeed. Fruityblack what? Makes a brotha like me wonder whether, or not , you're a male or female. lol lol lol Because your username sounds gay! lol lol lol "From a males perspective that is......."

  • This the last time I will waste my energy on you. You have so much knowledge about Rakim and I wish You would spend more time sharing that instead of wasting time with the dumb stuff. You are a smart individual and I wish I could hear from that person not the cocky rude person. I am big enough to say I am sorry for the imature remarks I made I don't expect the same from you but no biggie, It's in the past and I'm over it. My main objective is I pray Eric B & Rakim make another album together

  • I cannot believe a moron like you even makes such insightful comments. Obviously you also wear your pants or panties in your case around your ass!! You stupid fuck insted of discussing Rakim the best Mc in the world you have brought me to the imature place of insults becuse of a fucking screename. I have actually gone to your level of losing focus and that focus is Rakim is the Greatest MC EVER can we just discuss that??? forget the fag comments the insults?? I' better than that so r U.

  • i don't care what your username or sex is, you are on point in your assessment of Rakim's skills on the mic, he is the best ever!!! I have been saying this for nearly 20 years, the man is simply gifted!!!

  • God thank you !! your comment made my day, night YEAR!!! It gets so boring when people make the most hurtful remarks and totally get off of the subject which is that this man is simply the best lyrical Genius in the world!!! If a person takes the time to read his lyrics while listening to the tune it is almost too intense to handle!!! I was listening to the "Punisher" and reading it at the same time I almost passed out it was so powerful. I mean how does he do it??? I would love to meet him!

  • Sesiest man on the planet

  • You sick faggot!!!

  • You dick for brains!!! It's just a screen name I am a straight woman l not that I owe you any explination and If it were possible I would change the screename just because assholes like you always assume I am Gay. Fuck you freak I have been a fan of Eric B & Rakim since 86 they were the first hip-hop I had heard and he is the sexiest man on the planet. As for all you homophobes whipe the cum stains off your mouthes and check a persons page before assuming things about them yall are so stupid.

  • man Rakim is the best period. His lyrics were way ahead of its time. It is what 25+ years later and people are now realizing how "dope" he was. Today's artist just don't compare.

  • I think if you listen to all of the albums he did with Eric B they made a dope team!! unmatchable. I would give anything if they would get together again one more time!!

  • TRUE AND PURE HIP HOP!

AWW THE GOOD DAYS! Love it!

TOdays HIP HOP can't even compare.

  • look at how many high top fades are in the crowd...lol...this is my favorite time in Hip Hop history.

  • When Hip Hop was Hip Hop....see children you had to have skills...not a gimmick.

  • O'kay! This so Dam true! they so-called rappers of today. Are some fuckin' re-jects! They can't spit fire on a mic period! They got all they fuckin' dirty south so-called emcees! Who are to me some backwards minded punk ass ignorant good-for-nothings!!! We need all of the original EMCEES to make an seriously strong come back. To the real roots of Hip Hop. With an spiritual stance of knowledge of self. "You feel me?"

  • thats got to be a good feeling seeing the crowd going crazy like that

  • yo look at the crowd

  • OMG!

I had taped this back in 86 myself when I was 13 or so but the tape got lost in the mix when my Mom passed and I had to clean up her place and my old things...I am SOOOOO AMPED UP to find this ...I thought'd I NEVER EVER see this again!

    MUCH thanks

  • Greatest opening bar in the history of music - "I came in the door, I said it before, I never let the mic magnatize me no more" I listen mostly to metal and 90's grunge (AIC) but this is epic music! Whomever posted this... God bless you!

  • Nostalgic......back when hip hop was just learning how to walk. Damn I want those years back.

  • I remember watching this and even thinking then that he was the best...hands down!!! Thanks for posting...

  • cuz thanks for posting this i had this on vhs tape back in the day and lost track of it. this is hip hop at it's best

  • Thanks for posting from the south! hands down the best rappers Mc.

  • Hey kids of today, why does your hip hop SUCK DICK compared to all the great stuff from the 80's like Eric B?????

  • ima 13 year old and dont listen to that crap eric b & rakim are the greatest to dj and touch a mike

  • This + Digital Underground doing a fake "Amatuer Night" with bags on their heads = all-time fave Apollo moments!

  • PEACE TO THE GOD RAKIM ALLAH...

  • Damn I can't remember the last time I've seen the entire Apollo crowd feeling the Guest performer. Thanks for sharing the history.

  • Greatest rapper ever! Fuck Lil Wayne! He's not in the top 20 all-time!

  • I agree whole heartedly!!! I doubt if Lil Wayne makes it to my Top 50 LOL!!!

  • Yes, indeed! The R!

  • see this is how u know true hip hop...LOOK AT THE CROWD...THAT TELL U WHAT TRUE HIP HOP IS!

  • Dis is the shit!

    I am still jumpin!

  • Bad as hell.

  • BTW...they didn't need a bunch of vide-hoes shaking their asses and a bunch of "ig-nant ass" cats walking around on stage trying to dazzle the crowd...one DJ...one EMCEE

  • REAL TALK!

  • OMG...that was hot then and is still hot now!!! this is a overwhelming honor to even witness something like this. Rakim... the greatest lyricist that ever touched the Mic. Eric B...so creative and such a trend setter with his clever use of samples and cuts that most "rap" lovers of today could never understand. as you can see...they could really move the crowd.

thanks for the post...this is a rare clip that is a true artifact of the golden age of hip hop.

  • I'll never forget walking to summer school in 86/87? listening to this cut on my box and "It's just begun" by the Jimmy Castor band. I can still smell the summer air and that feeling that I had.

  • & when rakim said "cos i'm better than the rest of them" he was right. Rakim laid the law. He's the blueprint for the rest of the rappers that followed. Thank you for uploading this video.

  • I'm a rocker at heart but I remember going to school in '86 and hearing these guys. I was lucky to experience the classic age of hip hop firsthand. Nodisrespect to many rappers like biggie, tupac, jay-z etc.. but when eric b & rakim came out, We knew it, we knew this was different & I suppose it was like watching jimi hendrix play the guitar for the first time. You knew there would be many more to come, some a bit faster, but none would compare to the first ones...

  • Classic joint..but hes rhyming on top of the track kind of weak.

  • This shit gives me goosebumps..I remember this...

  • WOW! Thank you for Posting this Bro!

  • Anyone know what sneakers he is rocking?

  • Patrick Ewings

  • dope song!! thanks for posting this!!!
