@RealityCheckHero WHAT ARE YOU CALLING FOR......A BAND OF BLACK PEOPLE, I THINK THATS WHATS CALLED A TRIBE! Tribes arent known for starting bands except for Fine Young Cannibals. Tribes however is an EXCELLENT PC GAME!
patty is one of the most powerful female voices in rock history, and what presence. along with janis joplin, linda ronstatt, darleen love, deborh harry, and pat benatar, they are all hall of famers.
MacEnroe's trying to get Scandal back together. Lets hope that works out.I've always been a huge fan of fem rockers. There were not that many in the 80s.Patty was as cool & hip as Pat Benatar, and both are awesome. In the US the music industry hates females. In europe, oh my god are there some rock divas/bands.Delain, Nightwish, and dozens more. I've got an entire playlist series 4 Parts dedicated to them. And yea, Patty Smyth is there.
Today gals like Tarja Tarunen and Annette Olzon are bad ass rockers (look them up you'll like-band called Nightwish. Videos "Nemo", and "Amaranth"). ALSO, Charlotte Wessels/DELAIN..."April Rain" and "Frozen".But they all owe much too these old school gals that brought it down. DID YOU SEE THAT DANCE/FOOT THING she kept doing? Without MISSING A NOTE. Brittney needs to just quit! Patty Smythe is one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE ROCKERS! And I work with these great NEW groups. Let the 80s roll on...
3 dislikes here are fans of Gay Beiber and Whore gaga. Feel sorry to your music now for you can never experience a great decade with lots of good music anymore!
If the energy and passion in this frankly STUNNING performance could be harnessed, there'd probably be enough to power a country the size of Estonia or Moldova. Hot damn. I love Patty. A true rock goddess in EVERY sense of the word.
I think she sang Whole Lotta Love on this same show. It used to be posted on Youtube, but it has been removed. Do you happen to have it? If so, would love it if you could post.
This is an "angry chick song," but unlike Alanis Morrisette it's not annoying. It rocks! How come there aren't any female singers like this now? I hate the music industry.....
What are those things in the hands of the guys in the band? Someone told me they're called "instruments," but I don't understand what they're for. Are they playing "Guiotar Hero" or something? What exactly IS an instrument?
Hmmm. They were booked for 2 nights. I remember Patty & Scandal performing first, then John Waite. I was wrong about the song. It's "Change", by John Waite. Patty came out and did the chorus back-up for that night.
I cant say enough about her performance. Look how she just walks out and start blowing that song out! NoOne does that anymore... singers these days are sooooooooo spoid! KUDOS Patty!
It's fun to watch this stuff in light of Letterman's recent revelations about his constant womanizing. But then, as one wag put it, "if you can make women laugh, you can fuck above your station."
You are so wrong. 1. Smyth stopped performing in the early 90s because she was disillusioned with the music business, before she married the MAC (my favorite tennis player btw). 2. She reformed Scandal five years ago and they occasionally tour. I'm going to see them in Santa Cruz tomorrow night. Can't wait!
nuclearskull: I AM enjoying the music, Smyth was and IS still one of my faves; all I'm saying is that for the most part Schaeffer conducts himself like he's the shit and trust me, I've watched a LOT of Letterman episodes back in the day and he and his band DID fuck up a lot of artists' songs...
Paul Schaeffer is a fucking hack!! I've always despised the way he (and his god awful band) forced themselves into the songs of so many amazing artists/singers; it's like he actually thought his shit was actually good enough to be on the same level as the guest singers on the show. He especially did most of this in the 80's...
The man is a talentless piece of shit and I'm astounded that he's still on the Letterman show after these years of basically playing shit shit shit!
Dude you need to check your shit at the door and enjoy the music and from what I've heard ANTON was her studio drummer so I think the majority says: GO FUCK
Suh-weet!!! What a song!!! What a singer!!! What a band !! And love the moves, too!! Saw her in concert last week--if you get a chance see her--she is still awesome!!!
this is about the time eddie van halen asked her to join van halen and she turned them down because she was marrying John Mcenroe and he would have non of that. Van Halen then asked Sammy Hagar. True story

It appears that they did remove it! It's by far one of my all time favorite of her performances too. I've looked everywhere and couldn't find it again. It would be so great if you have it & thanks for the reply.
Great quality clip, but I'd be happy with anything with her from that time. :) What a powerhouse for such a little girl - the energy, the voice, etc. BTW, I think Paul Schaeffer worked with her in the beginning when he was still on SNL.
nice, thanks for the video, she sounds really good live, and so dose daves band... david ' a wonder woman and a fabulous babe' i wonder if he was trying to be funny for if that just came out, oh well
It's not surprise that vanhalen choose this gorgeous lady to lead their band over Hagar. She has a great voice. Although I think at least in part they choose her to show roth he wasn't what made the band great.
What a great find! You had to love the 80's and it's gorgeous women with powerful voices... Ann & Nancy Wilson, Pat Benatar, Grace Slick, Stevie Nicks, Patty Smyth, etc.
She's always doing Vegas shows these days at good-size casinos. And she doesn't look like she's aged morethan five years.
That's a Hooters guitarist playing with the band here. The whole 1987 Patty Smyth album, Never Enough, was done with The Hooters as her backing band. Like you needed another reason to like this.
Where did you get the original video clip? Did you record it from TV? Were you a Smyth fan specifically or did you record all the Letterman shows where bands and musicians were featured?
I found this on an old VHS tape I had recorded from TV. I rarely recorded Letterman, only when I was watching and thought something might be worth keeping.
Who is the guy with the red guitar? I know the dude with the yellow and black one is Sid McGuinnus, but I don't remember Dave's band ever having a second guitar player. Who IS that guy?
You're correct - that's Rick DiFonzo from Philly's The A's. Lots of connections in the Philly scene, Patty to The A's and The Hooters, The Hooters to Joan Osbourne and Cyndi Lauper, Lauper to the late Robert Hazard (he wrote Girls Just Wanna Have Fun). Also a lot of Eric Bazilian and Rob Hyman songwriting credits on songs from those others. DiFonzo also did a stint with Roger Waters (Pink Floyd) for a while and played on the Live Wall Concert, or whatever it was called.
I go back to her earliest work and had moved on musically in the last ten years, never having seen this video before. I started tearing up remembering how truly great she was! I hadn't felt that rush of rock and roll for a long time, thanks so much to the poster!
This performance captures what an outstanding performer with outstanding musicians can do with a nearly perfect song. Thanks so much for your thoughtful comment - it's the kind of reply that everyone who posts on YouTube dreams to receive. Rock On!
May interest you all to know that at least one of the musicians in this band, drummer Anton Fig, also performed with Patty on the album that Dave holds up at the beginning. He definitely knew the song.
Fan since 82. I was playing in bands for a living at the time and joined a band with a girl lead singer. We played all the MTV stuff, including lots of Scandal. Loved PS's singing from the first note on.
I was a Scandal fan since Warrior, but this is one of the baddest live performances on Letterman. Did you see how she energized the band and took them another level? One of the best and biggest voices ever compacted into a small body. I was at a concert that year in New York, where she opened for David Sanborn, and nearly stole that show. She's in the top three of all time rockers of all time. I'm sorry, Benatar--and I'm a fan---takes a backseat to her.
Man what a kick ass voice...I have always liked her music and songs. Not many females could sing this good live..Maybe Ann Wilson of Heart but besides these two I can't think of any..She is a hottie also.I never saw this clip before and just looked at the clip of her singing Whole Lotta Love by Zepplin live on Letterman and all I can say is Holly Shit.....Thanks to YouTube and the Poster I got to see this.
how strangely she growth.... she was beautiful young and now she beautiful too but how different she' growth. INFIDEL our Forces grows strongeRR everyday
The ultimate 80's rocker chick! She is right up there with Blondie, Benetar and Lauper. All great acts only they all fell apart when they forgot to rock and tried to show thier soft side. I can watch this over and over again. It rocks!
Halloween 1984, Patty dressed as a witch and opened for John Waite, great Minneapolis concert memory

I sure miss this stuff. *sigh*

wow, awesome find!

What is impressive is the energy she has on stage after 20 years and still has a great voice. She's still as sexy as ever. Wow!

Where did you get the original video clip? Did you record it from TV? Were you a Smyth fan specifically or did you record all the Letterman shows where bands and musicians were featured?
siskokidd 3 years ago
I found this on an old VHS tape I had recorded from TV. I rarely recorded Letterman, only when I was watching and thought something might be worth keeping.

@KissFanSite Do you have the other song they did that night?? She and Letterman's band do a Zepplin cover too.. thanks for posting!!

Good stuff. I've always liked Patty Smyth & I wonder what Van Halen would have been like with her fronting. We can only imagine...

Who is the guy with the red guitar? I know the dude with the yellow and black one is Sid McGuinnus, but I don't remember Dave's band ever having a second guitar player. Who IS that guy?
c0deMunkey 3 years ago
Folks say it's Rick Difonzo (The A's).
A lot of performers on Dave's show bring a few of their band members along for the TV appearance.
KissFanSite 3 years ago

He definitely knew the song.
siskokidd 3 years ago
Anton and Will are definitely into this performance. Anton's playing really pushes the track along for sure.

Fan since 82. I was playing in bands for a living at the time and joined a band with a girl lead singer. We played all the MTV stuff, including lots of Scandal. Loved PS's singing from the first note on.
siskokidd 3 years ago
I was a Scandal fan since Warrior, but this is one of the baddest live performances on Letterman. Did you see how she energized the band and took them another level? One of the best and biggest voices ever compacted into a small body. I was at a concert that year in New York, where she opened for David Sanborn, and nearly stole that show. She's in the top three of all time rockers of all time. I'm sorry, Benatar--and I'm a fan---takes a backseat to her.

You're dead on. Patty's performance inspired the band and their response coaxed a killer performance from her.

This is definitely a killer live performance by Patty. She delivers to goods vocally, looking very cool and naturally rockin'.

Man, I love this song, one of my all-time favorites!
lpcamaroboi 3 years ago
Saw her open for Bryan Adams in like 1985 and she completely mopped the stage with him. Wish every rock singer could pour out the energy like this.
coin4charon 3 years ago
Nice. She's still incredible. As a female bass player and lead singer, it means so much to see real "soul" poured into the music. Live on, chick!

Yep,she's hot.

The ultimate 80's rocker chick! She is right up there with Blondie, Benetar and Lauper. All great acts only they all fell apart when they forgot to rock and tried to show thier soft side. I can watch this over and over again. It rocks!
eastcoastjimmy 3 years ago
It looks like Rick DiFonzo is the guitarist all the way in the back.

Question - I know that Rick DiFonzo (The A's) played on the album and the lead guitarist looks like Rick, is it him? Thanks!
