  • Halloween 1984, Patty dressed as a witch and opened for John Waite, great Minneapolis concert memory

  • Im the first to admit there were some great rocker fems back in the 70s/80s and I have all of that featured in a playlist.HOWEVER I totally disaggree about the new gals.....not the ones we in the US are stuck with, THE REAL ONES. All over the world is a huge rock/metal movement for the last decade and these gals are off the hook.Check out: Nightwish, NEMO, & Amaranth; DELAIN, April Rain, & Frozen; Leaves Eyes, Elegy. You folks gotta catch up. There are some smokin fems rockin today.I PROMO THEM.

  • @kevingthompson13

Excellent post! I'll certainly check out your fem modern rocker playlist! Always looking to catch up! Rock on!

  • @KissFanSite Did you check out those bands & songs I listed? I got some male fronted bands you"ll love. 1) Hamerfall; Any Means Necessary 2) Sabaton; 40:1 (official) & Cliffs of Galapoli 3) Evergrey; Touch of Blessing & Broken Wings. Some more gals you"ll like: 1) Sirenia; Path to Decay 2) Leaves Eyes; Norweigian Love Song (live official) 3) Tarja Tarunen; Die Alive & Good Die Young (live w/Scorpions!). Email me directly for more.Id like to hear from you. I have some doozy playlists for you!

  • You think the lady ga ga and Katy Perry can sing like this no.wow

  • like Danny Wilde version better

  • Does she do the Elaine dance?.lol

  • Pat Benetar, Patty Smith, Ann Wilson, Joan Jett, Lita Ford, Melissa Etheridge....women sure knew how to rock back in the day. Now all you see is pop tarts.

  • Damn. Smokin' hot. I love me some Patti Smyth.

Is there ANYBODY today that can sing like that? I can't think of one female vocalist in recent history that can rock like she could.

  • @jth213

The only one that I can think of that comes close is Sass Jordan. Check out the "So Hard" video I've uploaded, then check out her live versions of "Make You A Believer" on Youtube. Sass is still delivering the vocal goods even today!

  • @KissFanSite ...totally agree about Sass...... first saw her on a network (ABC i think) Halloween show performing Make You A Believer back when it came out and they were live from some theme park ..... fell completely in love with her voice right then and there....and as you said, she is still one of the best live voices out there.

ps.... my first album was Destroyer back in "76.....had to throw that one in KFS ....lol

  • @ace2k707

I remember that Sass performance too. Maybe it was at a Disney park somewhere? I discovered her back in the "Columbia Record Club" days when I selected "Racine" pretty much out of the blue.

My first album was the first Bad Co. album, but Destroyer was my first KISS album (my sis bought it for me). The rest is, as they say, no, I can't say it! :)

  • @RealityCheckHero WHAT ARE YOU CALLING FOR......A BAND OF BLACK PEOPLE, I THINK THATS WHATS CALLED A TRIBE! Tribes arent known for starting bands except for Fine Young Cannibals. Tribes however is an EXCELLENT PC GAME!

  • soundman sucks

  • This woman must be a demon in the sack. Nice choice John McEnroe, you lucky bastard.

  • Hey John if you see this please try to get the band back together.you are one lucky man.macEroe

  • patty is one of the most powerful female voices in rock history, and what presence. along with janis joplin, linda ronstatt, darleen love, deborh harry, and pat benatar, they are all hall of famers.

  • MacEnroe's trying to get Scandal back together. Lets hope that works out.I've always been a huge fan of fem rockers. There were not that many in the 80s.Patty was as cool & hip as Pat Benatar, and both are awesome. In the US the music industry hates females. In europe, oh my god are there some rock divas/bands.Delain, Nightwish, and dozens more. I've got an entire playlist series 4 Parts dedicated to them. And yea, Patty Smyth is there.

  • Johnny Mac's an ass but he's no fool. He couldn't have picked a better wife.

  • A talented professional. And very cute.

  • yea - the 3 dislikes are lesbo groupies who got the Heisman from her! LOL....damn hot!

  • Todays female singers have no clue.. She was sexy.. tough.. classy and my god SO HOT!!

  • god if I could go back in time !!!

  • Today gals like Tarja Tarunen and Annette Olzon are bad ass rockers (look them up you'll like-band called Nightwish. Videos "Nemo", and "Amaranth"). ALSO, Charlotte Wessels/DELAIN..."April Rain" and "Frozen".But they all owe much too these old school gals that brought it down. DID YOU SEE THAT DANCE/FOOT THING she kept doing? Without MISSING A NOTE. Brittney needs to just quit! Patty Smythe is one of my ALL TIME FAVORITE ROCKERS! And I work with these great NEW groups. Let the 80s roll on...

  • she was gorgious back then

  • Had a BIG crush on Patty back in high school. Man I love YOU TUBE! That IS how it's done. Effortless...

  • Yeah! It's enough baby!

and kudos to Anton Zip..... eh, Fig

  • Wow Patty is a true performer my rock queen

  • A great time, a babe that just blows my mind.. To bad I was only 6 at the time..

  • 3 dislikes here are fans of Gay Beiber and Whore gaga. Feel sorry to your music now for you can never experience a great decade with lots of good music anymore!

  • Man check out those hot leggs!

  • Wow now thats a sound!

  • This was from a time when rock singers actually rocked! Yeah Patty!

  • The music of the 80,s and the women that sang it. Nothing today comes near it.

  • just one word: WOW. Is she from the same town in Jersey as Bruce?

  • is she still married to mad mac?

  • Eyes, lips and getaway sticks...

  • I love this performance so much. Raw talent unleashed....

  • mann this girl could belt it out.

  • If the energy and passion in this frankly STUNNING performance could be harnessed, there'd probably be enough to power a country the size of Estonia or Moldova. Hot damn. I love Patty. A true rock goddess in EVERY sense of the word.

  • Anton back there!!! Love this! Thanks for posting!!

  • back when letterman still had hair and nobody realized the power was not plugged in to paul schaffers electric piano.

  • Letterman, you're still a vile creep.

  • I think she sang Whole Lotta Love on this same show. It used to be posted on Youtube, but it has been removed. Do you happen to have it? If so, would love it if you could post.

    Thanks

  • Fantastic voice! Even now she has a beautiful pair of legs. McEnroe is happy.

  • I think this is what Melissa Ethridge wished her voice sounded like.

  • She's so underrated it isn't funny. Thanks for posting this clip. Fantastic performance.

  • patty is a hot and powerful babe. this performance just blows you over. Rock on Patty!!!

  • she is sooo good. no pretensions needed. just sang the song with lots of energy.

  • This is an "angry chick song," but unlike Alanis Morrisette it's not annoying. It rocks! How come there aren't any female singers like this now? I hate the music industry.....

  • i love this song!!!

  • powerful voice!

  • Comment removed

  • She almost became the lead singer for Van Halen after David Lee Roth quit the band in 1985. That would have been interesting to hear.

  • Is she still married to that tennis douchbag?

  • LOL

    yes

  • What are those things in the hands of the guys in the band? Someone told me they're called "instruments," but I don't understand what they're for. Are they playing "Guiotar Hero" or something? What exactly IS an instrument?

  • Actually she was solo up front, as was John Waite .... I was front row ... Who is Shane ?

  • Hmmm. They were booked for 2 nights. I remember Patty & Scandal performing first, then John Waite. I was wrong about the song. It's "Change", by John Waite. Patty came out and did the chorus back-up for that night.

  • paladium totally remember Patty coming back out

  • I saw her with John Waite in hollywood , many years ago . They both rocked ' missing you ' No doubt !

  • Comment removed

  • Female singers today should take note. This is how it's done.

  • amen brother

  • @Drumguy1988 And she does it soooooo HOT!

  • haha..nice one dave....wish ud still b funny like?lol

  • She's even more impressive when you're in the audience. Saw her live with Scandal @ The Palladium in Hollywood.

  • Damn, what a performer!

  • I cant say enough about her performance. Look how she just walks out and start blowing that song out! NoOne does that anymore... singers these days are sooooooooo spoid! KUDOS Patty!

  • she's just awesome.

  • I bought a girlfriend a jacket like that and DAMN!!! I couldnt get her off of me. Had to move to Fl. LOL!! TRUTH!!

  • yeah look at the look she gave letterman on the way out - she roX!

  • She was really sexy in her day. I wonder if Letterman banged her. Can't blame him if he tried!

  • i only heard her music, strange she looks just like i thought

  • That chick is just cool...

  • I love Patty Smyth voice. Can't stand Letterman.

  • It's fun to watch this stuff in light of Letterman's recent revelations about his constant womanizing. But then, as one wag put it, "if you can make women laugh, you can fuck above your station."

  • kinda old cut ....but what a fine rockin' babe!!

  • Her enthusiasm and raw energy are infectious...even the band gets into it, and Letterman about wet himself at the end of the song.

  • The woman kicks ass, plain and simple. What a voice!

  • Patty has pipes! When she was in her prime in the 80's she could have easily blown away the best from American Idol.

  • American Idol IS bullshit WAKE THE FUCK UP!!

  • 95% of AI is, but the remaining 5% of the people can really sing. It's not all bullshit, Sherlock.

  • NED no evidence of disease type in nimesh nagarsheth click search.

  • Patty is awesome, and still hot in her early 50's!

  • Huh Huh Huh Hey Beavis .. It looks like she has to go pee at 0:55 .. huh huh huh...

  • She really intensifies the song. A very strong performance for appearing on late night TV. She's great!

  • patty couldve sang with a mariachi band and made it rock!!

  • Great!!!!

  • Too bad John McEnroe made her a Central Park West SHUT IN.... a real talent gone to waste...

  • You are so wrong. 1. Smyth stopped performing in the early 90s because she was disillusioned with the music business, before she married the MAC (my favorite tennis player btw). 2. She reformed Scandal five years ago and they occasionally tour. I'm going to see them in Santa Cruz tomorrow night. Can't wait!

  • So cool to read all these positive comments about Patty and Scandal. They were so underrated.

  • nuclearskull: I AM enjoying the music, Smyth was and IS still one of my faves; all I'm saying is that for the most part Schaeffer conducts himself like he's the shit and trust me, I've watched a LOT of Letterman episodes back in the day and he and his band DID fuck up a lot of artists' songs...

  • Paul Schaeffer is a fucking hack!! I've always despised the way he (and his god awful band) forced themselves into the songs of so many amazing artists/singers; it's like he actually thought his shit was actually good enough to be on the same level as the guest singers on the show. He especially did most of this in the 80's...

The man is a talentless piece of shit and I'm astounded that he's still on the Letterman show after these years of basically playing shit shit shit!

  • Dude you need to check your shit at the door and enjoy the music and from what I've heard ANTON was her studio drummer so I think the majority says: GO FUCK

  • Relax ... chill .. opinion expressed !

don't agree but you got your point of view across.

    gb

  • Great video! Some of the best rock came out in the 80's! Do you have the entire interview? I'd like to see it. Please post it if you can.

  • That's the whole interview. The only part that's missing is Dave saying that they're out of time and they quickly go to commercial.

    Thanks for the comments.

  • Sorry to hear that. A longer interview would have been interesting. Thanks for the reply though.

  • Bravo, Patty. Powering through an awesome performance in front of a very forgettable backup band... You deserved better...

  • MMMMM , my babysitter .

  • Suh-weet!!! What a song!!! What a singer!!! What a band !! And love the moves, too!! Saw her in concert last week--if you get a chance see her--she is still awesome!!!

  • AND it still stands up today.. SCANDAL..Fuck YEAH!!!

  • patt could sing sing the fone book and the band rocks

  • Go you good thing....yeah rockin,,live and all,Get that into you Britney.

  • this is about the time eddie van halen asked her to join van halen and she turned them down because she was marrying John Mcenroe and he would have non of that. Van Halen then asked Sammy Hagar. True story

  • You can also find the original studio version of this song by Danny Wilde (later of the Rembrandts) on here...just a great song...

  • yep, check out the original version on CD, it's a solo from Tommy Conwell...

  • Man, i got chills around the 3:00 minute mark; when they kicked the MF'er into another gear!!! LOL Boy, i too truly miss Rock and Roll--this is how it used to be kiddies!!!

  • Can it get much Hotter than this....what the hell ever happened to rock and roll

  • precisely

  • Smokin hot!

  • SWEET the Band was right on that night HUH? Anton and her Stopping right on the Mark? Hell yeah!! Love it!!

  • Anton played on the record as well. And so did Rick DiFonzo the guitarist in the back playing lead.

  • She is so sexy and what a powerful voice for a little thing. Luv her mad

  • WOW!!! Patty You kick ass on so many levels !!! HOT HOT HOT!! You make my blood a boilin!! LOL!!

  • No! I've been going crazy trying to find that again too. It's amazing !

  • They took it off??? I think, THINK, I downloaded it. I'll have to check.

  • It appears that they did remove it! It's by far one of my all time favorite of her performances too. I've looked everywhere and couldn't find it again. It would be so great if you have it & thanks for the reply.

  • Found it, gimmie a half hour or so then check my channel.

  • It's up. If they find it again, I'm naming it something obscure like the bears of saskatchewan. :)

  • Anyone got the video of her Letterman appearance where she sang "Whole Lotta Love?". That absolutely killed.

  • I love her outfit, it's so cute, the 80's rocked.

  • Great quality clip, but I'd be happy with anything with her from that time. :) What a powerhouse for such a little girl - the energy, the voice, etc. BTW, I think Paul Schaeffer worked with her in the beginning when he was still on SNL.

  • I like daves band but it seems she's coaxing more out them then they ordinarily would give

  • nice, thanks for the video, she sounds really good live, and so dose daves band... david ' a wonder woman and a fabulous babe' i wonder if he was trying to be funny for if that just came out, oh well

  • A song written by the ultra-talented Danny Wilde.

  • It's not surprise that vanhalen choose this gorgeous lady to lead their band over Hagar. She has a great voice. Although I think at least in part they choose her to show roth he wasn't what made the band great.

  • What a great find! You had to love the 80's and it's gorgeous women with powerful voices... Ann & Nancy Wilson, Pat Benatar, Grace Slick, Stevie Nicks, Patty Smyth, etc.

I sure miss this stuff. *sigh*

  • wow, awesome find!

  • She's always doing Vegas shows these days at good-size casinos. And she doesn't look like she's aged morethan five years.

That's a Hooters guitarist playing with the band here. The whole 1987 Patty Smyth album, Never Enough, was done with The Hooters as her backing band. Like you needed another reason to like this.

  • What is impressive is the energy she has on stage after 20 years and still has a great voice. She's still as sexy as ever. Wow!

  • Where did you get the original video clip? Did you record it from TV? Were you a Smyth fan specifically or did you record all the Letterman shows where bands and musicians were featured?

  • I found this on an old VHS tape I had recorded from TV. I rarely recorded Letterman, only when I was watching and thought something might be worth keeping.

  • @KissFanSite Do you have the other song they did that night?? She and Letterman's band do a Zepplin cover too.. thanks for posting!!

  • @shaggychef

I don't think so but I'll dig out the tape and check!

  • Peaking on TV. Really killer post...

  • Killer!!You can see at about a minute in,Paul and the guys start realy getting into it.

  • Good stuff. I've always liked Patty Smyth & I wonder what Van Halen would have been like with her fronting. We can only imagine...

  • Who is the guy with the red guitar? I know the dude with the yellow and black one is Sid McGuinnus, but I don't remember Dave's band ever having a second guitar player. Who IS that guy?

  • Folks say it's Rick Difonzo (The A's).

A lot of performers on Dave's show bring a few of their band members along for the TV appearance.

  • You're correct - that's Rick DiFonzo from Philly's The A's. Lots of connections in the Philly scene, Patty to The A's and The Hooters, The Hooters to Joan Osbourne and Cyndi Lauper, Lauper to the late Robert Hazard (he wrote Girls Just Wanna Have Fun). Also a lot of Eric Bazilian and Rob Hyman songwriting credits on songs from those others. DiFonzo also did a stint with Roger Waters (Pink Floyd) for a while and played on the Live Wall Concert, or whatever it was called.

  • I go back to her earliest work and had moved on musically in the last ten years, never having seen this video before. I started tearing up remembering how truly great she was! I hadn't felt that rush of rock and roll for a long time, thanks so much to the poster!

  • This performance captures what an outstanding performer with outstanding musicians can do with a nearly perfect song. Thanks so much for your thoughtful comment - it's the kind of reply that everyone who posts on YouTube dreams to receive. Rock On!

  • May interest you all to know that at least one of the musicians in this band, drummer Anton Fig, also performed with Patty on the album that Dave holds up at the beginning. He definitely knew the song.

  • Anton and Will are definitely into this performance. Anton's playing really pushes the track along for sure.

  • Fan since 82. I was playing in bands for a living at the time and joined a band with a girl lead singer. We played all the MTV stuff, including lots of Scandal. Loved PS's singing from the first note on.

  • I was a Scandal fan since Warrior, but this is one of the baddest live performances on Letterman. Did you see how she energized the band and took them another level? One of the best and biggest voices ever compacted into a small body. I was at a concert that year in New York, where she opened for David Sanborn, and nearly stole that show. She's in the top three of all time rockers of all time. I'm sorry, Benatar--and I'm a fan---takes a backseat to her.

  • You're dead on. Patty's performance inspired the band and their response coaxed a killer performance from her.

  • Man what a kick ass voice...I have always liked her music and songs. Not many females could sing this good live..Maybe Ann Wilson of Heart but besides these two I can't think of any..She is a hottie also.I never saw this clip before and just looked at the clip of her singing Whole Lotta Love by Zepplin live on Letterman and all I can say is Holly Shit.....Thanks to YouTube and the Poster I got to see this.

  • This is definitely a killer live performance by Patty. She delivers to goods vocally, looking very cool and naturally rockin'.

  • Man, I love this song, one of my all-time favorites!

  • Saw her open for Bryan Adams in like 1985 and she completely mopped the stage with him. Wish every rock singer could pour out the energy like this.

  • Nice. She's still incredible. As a female bass player and lead singer, it means so much to see real "soul" poured into the music. Live on, chick!

  • Yep,she's hot.

  • sorry. ..... and she has two boys in that marriage now. type-o's are hell.

  • She is married to John McEnroe the tennis player and tow boys now.

  • Rick DiFonzo ?

  • how strangely she growth.... she was beautiful young and now she beautiful too but how different she' growth. INFIDEL our Forces grows strongeRR everyday

  • "kick ass" sums it up, alright. don't know what else to say?

  • patty smyth en vivo me parece mejor que en video clips

  • eastcoastjimmy - you got it right man!

    right on the head!!!!!!!!!

    Patty smokes-----------

  • from the era when people actually sang in their live performances

  • The ultimate 80's rocker chick! She is right up there with Blondie, Benetar and Lauper. All great acts only they all fell apart when they forgot to rock and tried to show thier soft side. I can watch this over and over again. It rocks!

  • It looks like Rick DiFonzo is the guitarist all the way in the back.

  • Unfrigginbelievable what a voice other rocker women could take a study course from Patty

  • it doesnt get any better live!

  • Wow what a performance. This is how to do it ladies. This is LIVE!!!! ROCK ON PATTY

  • the only thing missing from the awesome performance was Tommy Conwell's guitar solo from the album!

  • you can tell by Dave's reaction how amazing that performance was. that was kick ass!

  • Kick ass defines this performance!

  • Awesome!

Question - I know that Rick DiFonzo (The A's) played on the album and the lead guitarist looks like Rick, is it him? Thanks!
