  • when i was a kid i just liked this song for being a pop hit and it sounded good. wow! now i listen to it and truly appreciate how passionate a song this is with it's lyrics and melody. not everything in the 80's had to be electronic sounding or metal hair to be good. what a beautiful piece of work john cougar mellencamp.

  • most "simple white mountain people" i know want to be left alone. Go evolve why cant we do things our way the "old way"

  • Little Pink Houses.?

  • Omg fuck all you people who have nothing nice to say about america not everyone in america is bad and dont blame a whole country because all oir politicians are rich people who think because they have money they suddenly think their smarter than everyone without it and they think they should be in charge

  • The 28 who disliked this song and video must go to work in some high rise and vacation down at the Gulf of Mexico. That goes for any future dislikers as well. I can understand why they would dislike it though; none of them like being told that a simple, blue collar working man pays for their fancy garbage and trips. I think it strikes a nerve when they hear that without these hard working people they would be useless and more importantly jobless since most can't even rub two sticks together

  • You're arguing about what this song is about? It's about his life growing up in Bloomington Indiana, and How it shaped his perception of this country.

  • I always loved John cougar, all the songs he wrote are exactly right . the story is true,

  • I love this country i am proud to say i was born here the reason people from all the other countrys want to come here is because this is the country where you can be whatever you want to be no matter what it is and if you dont make it dont blame america because its your damn fault!but the point is if you dont like being here then we can do just fine without your pussy hippy ass!!! USA ALL DAY!

  • @MetalGrimStar "pussy hippy" Really? you act like you just got back from Vietnam! Lol!

But on a other note! You really should pay more attention to the news.. or is there this secret part of America where its 100% peaches and cream? Because this country is sitting on its ear... and in the worse way too...

  • @fukutube75 your fuckin retarded try living anywhee else tell me how it works for you dumbass

  • ignorant white trash , that is an unacceptable lifestyle choice in 2012 , and you people are what is wrong with america , please evolve already and stop trying to hold the rest of us back

  • Vacation down at the GULF OF MEXICO!!!!!!!!

  • Home of the free!

  • Life would have been better if LBJ And Clint Murchison Sr. didn't have Kennedy killed! Our country sucks now.

  • sometimes i wish i grew up in the 50s.

  • Is it weird that I'm a Canadian yet fucking love this song to death? Whatever, keep rocking.

  • @Maxmulham naw its not

  • I agree with Crazy Jake on this one! John Mellencamp is extremely angry, bitter and vitriolic in Pink Houses to an almost violent extreme because the working class are mad as hell and they can't take it anymore! Absolutely nothing has changed in America! We all have a right to be angry and ticked off. Keep Fighting Johnny Kitty Cat! Meow!

  • =)

  • I also really liked kurt hummel's version!!

  • I live 90 minutes north of the US border. I've always considered America our best friends. Be proud, like us.

  • @billfriday1958 I love Canadiens Too.

  • I was an Ohio born and bred, farm boy, college Junior back in the '80's when Mellencamp's songs hit the Heartland. They touched and still touch our hearts because they speak to the down-to-eath, blue collar hard working people who deep down to the bone couldn't give a damn about and won't be swayed by all the politician's games, but rather still, some would say naively, dream that America is open for business and offers the best, last hope for any decent and free way of life.

  • I'm a New Zealander and I think that we should take our hats off to America and all it has to offer, fly the flag, be proud, love you guys and gals.....

  • perfect anti-home owners association tune

  • I'm Canadian raised in England, fly that flag guys !! God Bless & peace to all !!!

  • civil rights movement anybody?

  • @gijose95

I'm guessing that's what that drummer keeps mumblin' to himself...Ha-Hah!

  • @batucada358 "I'm a little teapot..."

  • He's commenting on how the "little" people including those in low income housing and the elderly are suffering because the government is taking land and building more and more. It is all about consumers and shopping in big corporations like Wal*Mart that does NOT help the communities in which they move into; shutting down all the mom and pop shops, offering low prices temporarily then raising them once theyve been in that community awhile because there's no place else to shop. Anti government!

  • I'm want thank ''Glee'' where i heard this song. I do not like how Colin is singing, but the song is great!

  • John loves America he just Hated what it was becoming and this was how he told it. But he never gave up on her. If you dont Love America...Get The Fuck Out Pussy!

  • It never fails to amaze me that people think this song is about patriotism. Do you think John wants everyone to live in pink houses?

  • @tclayjr Lol, I agree. xD

  • UNA JOYA DE VIDEO! SIMPLEMENTE, UNA SUBLIME INTERPRETACION!

  • 27 people are losers and ain't no big deal.

  • Preach the word John!

  • was that the walton hotel that burned down?

  • IF WE WENT TO ANOTHER COUNTRY WOULD THEY DO ALL OF THIS FOR US?

  • I always thought this song was called "They've Got America".

  • Anybody else notice the biker at the end of the vid hands over a pipe or one hitter to his pal, pal puts it up to his mouth............

  • We were lucky to grow up there

  • This song got my heart a pumpin' in '83, and it got it a pumpin' again tonight.....

  • Gorgeous Kenny @ 2:22

  • I heard this on Glee ( don't bite my head off) and I just can't get it out of my head it's a good song. I sing it a lot on my way to school and at home. To me it's just catchy.

  • When i grow old i want to be like that black man at the start of the song. Little house lake side, eastern Canada ( my home land ) , sitting in a rocking chair on the front porch with my dog just watching the water ... Whatever Country your from Canada U.S.A this song has VERY GOOD lyrics for both countrys ... love this song...

  • This song is about the USA but in actuall fact can be sung for any country, very good lyrics

  • cool

  • American made ,by Americans

  • American made

  • A slice of Americana!

  • Love or leave it!

  • grew up listening to jcm in the far north of nz was freekin awesome times in mangonui hard yeeeeeaaaaaaaaaaa.

  • 24 people are idiots

  • I love Mellencamp's music! It's so reminiscent of 60s rock. I also love how mellencamp's songs tell the stories of working class americans that are the backbone of our country......or they were till everybody started outsourcing overseas. Like foamy says "Keep the jobs in the USA......so i can understand who i'm talking to"

  • I am proud to be a Hoosier!

  • @CapesandCloaks I live 50 miles from his hometown Seymour, I know what you mean. I've always been proud to be a Hoosier, and it brings his music closer to home. Crimson and Crean!

  • Goes a little further than that CrazyJake. Don't get me wrong, I agree with you. But OUR OWN government has been selling us out for years. The American people need to do more than just talk if they want this country back. Read the quotes of Thomas Jefferson sometime. He was big on two things. The Second Anendment and NOT trusting government.

  • People NEED to be more patriotic in this damn country!! Why should it be against regulation to fly the American flag in America! Who cares if it offends people? They came to America so they should respect our customs, not be offended by them. If you dont like it GET THE HELL OUT of out cthe U.S.A.

  • @CrazyJake451 Im scottish and i agree with you all the way. You're american and proud and every right to be.

  • @CrazyJake451 we hear ya down here in australia! if you don't like our way of life, we have airports in every capital. FUCK OFF!!!!!!!!

  • @CrazyJake451 Thank you same thing with the confederate flag here in the south most people think it was based off slavery, but need to read there history shit

  • @CrazyJake451

I love this land as much as the next person, but this country has fallen apart. It's in no way what the founders wanted or envisioned. You want to know why people aren't patriotic? It's because of our government. Patriotism has nothing to do with land, but with government, and ours has nothing at all to be proud of. Ours is full of nothing but corrupt politicians, and it's the two party system that's killing America. It's our government that's offensive.

  • @CrazyJake451 Kid your like five years old, so I wouldn't be talking!

  • @1996BiH1996 First of all, reporting an incorrect age just makes you look a lier (I do not think you needed a metophor is needed in your short comment). I am 13. And what does my age have to do with my pride for America you freakin communist.

  • @CrazyJake451 You're the kind of person who makes americans look bad. As soon as someone says one wrong word they're a communist. I imagine you're the average stubborn buzzcut douchebag american who still believes in the big Red White & blue ILLUSION that you have freedom, which you do not. Please refrain from responding as i have no interest in what you may have to say in return.

  • @CthulhuRogers and who the fuck do you think you are you eltitist fuckhead. your one of those liberal fuckheads who I think are even worse then those stubborn douchebags. Yes I hate both fucking sides and even a shit like you. Keep your opinions to yourself.

  • @brooks323 I hate you fence sitters content to pretend to have some sort of mystical magical views but never expressing them because they're not actually that radical or sensible and you don't want them to be shot down, so keep silent and pretend to have them like some soft-spoken Jedi Master. Content to express discontent with everybody else, though. Just kidding buddy, but you see what I did there? You could hate on everybody, or you could just chill and be cool with them.

  • @CrazyJake451 patriotism is stupid, maybe a little bit of nationalism can't hurt nobody but pledging to a flag with no disagreements is an idiotic way of living. the first amendment of the Bill of Rights is the freedom of speech and i live by that. we're allowed to say controversial things for a reason.

  • @CrazyJake451 Fuck this country and FUCK YOU, TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @CrazyJake451 Dont care about the discriminate fucks who dislike my comment... but.... North America... South America..... We are american. ;)

  • @CrazyJake451 Please tell me of once instance where it has been "against regulation" to fly the American flag in the US. I have no idea what you're talking about. It sounds like you have a fear of people different from you though.

  • @CrazyJake451 You have it wrong. If it is a country of freedom, don't you agree that people have the freedom to think what they want? Or do you define freedom for others?

  • @CrazyJake451 YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS...... I love COSTA RICA.

  • @CrazyJake451

You do realize that this song is a biting bitter recrimination of what was going on in america during the early 80's when Reagan's economic policies were devastating farming communities in the mid-west and when his social policies were destroying poor inner-city communities all over the country.

This song is about how the urban poor and rural farmers were being ignored and abused by the government thanks to policies which greatly benefited the rich and corporations.

  • @Hammerhead547

Yep just goes to show how long BS has been going on!

The American lies...dont we tell all good boys they can be president!

All the shit we've been told believed and repeated!

Makes me me proud to be a dissident!

  • @Hammerhead547

It's been nearly 30 years and these policies are still been played out across the world by all governments.

  • @MrSweetlou1980 absolutely agree with you mr. Hammerhead. i'm a product from the eighties.

  • America is still great!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This song so needs a remake, exactly as it is, but full of the irony of the American dream gone wrong and the strong will and generosity of the American people at the front. We still love you ordinary, hard working, big thinking Americans with your will to make things work

    .

  • @MattMollgaard It's on next weeks Family Guy.

  • This is such a GREAT song. ROCK ON!!!!!!

  • Great song! It reminds me of Ken Koenig's song of "Little Boats on the River" check it out if you haven't heard it! Let me know what you think of it if you do!!

  • I'm 17 and when I grew up in the 90's, this is just one of those songs you remember growing up with, either if your parents were playing in the car down a long road or something. All my life, until I now, I thought "little baby cows for you and me." and I never quite understood why. He was actually saying "Little Pink Houses" ...the title of the song.

  • @CorruptBox fuck you

  • And so the search begins for astanghetti's original comment...

  • MY FAMILY WERE ON OUR WAY FROM CHICAGO TO NASHVILLE FOR A VACATION. I AM A BIG "J.C.M." FAN. SO WE STOPED IN HIS HOMETOWN IN INDIANA JUST TO LOOK AROUND. I JUST HAPPEN TO RUN INTO THAT GAS STATION THAT WAS IN THIS VIDEO. I'VE GOT PICTURES. IT WAS PRETTY COOL.....

  • i hate the youtube comment system. They should use chain comments instead of chronological comments.

  • ..can`t we all just get along...??........

  • If there is one thing John Mellencamp's music is symbolic of, it's the greatness of sheer rock 'n' roll simplicity.

  • @samboy1288 Agreed!

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVELOVE LOVELOVE LOVELOVE LOVELOVE LOVELOVE LOVELOVE LOVELOVE LOVELOVE LOVELOVE LOVELOVE LOVELOVE LOVELOVE LOVELOVE LOVELOVE LOVELOVE LOVE~~~JOhn Mellencamp!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I think I married one of those at 1.50

  • what a song - what a memory

  • Half of this video was made in my town! The old African man in the beginning lived here FOREVER!

  • @KevinMFox93 To say he lived there forever is probably an understatement. He lived there as long as most of my family can remember. And even to visit my family in C-Burg, this song gets played as loud as possible while travelling across SR-60.

  • WTF Y ARE PEOPLE FIGHTING ON SUCH A BEAUTIFUL SONG SUCH AS THIS?

I'M PROUD TO SAY I'M FROM THE SAME STATE AS MUCH AS A COUNTRY AS JOHN "HOOSIER (i know it's cougar shut up) MELLENCAMP!

  • Omg you are all idiots this song is actually a satirical song, he is making fun of America...

  • @SaltySangster He's not making fun of America, it's more of him pointing out that the "American dream" isn't all it was really hyped up to be.

  • aint that america

  • I love how this song discusses how the American dream comes to die with age and cynicism, yet it's been co-opted by the Tea Partiers as a theme song for Amurrica!

  • Only in America will people start an argument on Youtube. Welcome to America 2011, pea brained, selfish and unmoral capital of the world

  • In Indiana they have drive thru convenience stores. It's so weird. You actually drive into the store.

  • 24 people don't have pink houses.

  • Foot loose, bitch's!

  • looks a little like Micheal J. Foxx in the beginning.

  • @SaintSirus Yep, totally agree. Springsteen tried to open up everyone's eyes with "Born In The USA".

  • 24 people don't live in America

  • wish I was dancin in that field with John..........wonderful song!!!!!!!

  • @misslantana52 more like in a horizontal dancing position! ;) he was the shit back in the day! you could say i was borderline obsessed with him..

  • Hey its the most misunderstood song on earth!

    :D

Some of the comments are fucking hilarious.

  • Adapt and over overcome... THIS IS AMERICA.. HOME OF THE FREE.. Make it your own Have ya ever lived in a simple pink house??? HOME..is where ya make it.. At least we are not lead into a burning oven LETS JUST GET ALONG n MOST OF ALL RESPECT N LOVE!!!

  • @brettpainter1 brett how much do you make a year? I want the NET.

  • @billboardnumber1

whats money got to do with it?

  • @ddawg132 dawg, money is everything. Money is power, money is authority, money is justice. Anyone who tells you otherwise is in denial. Offer them $1 000 000 you see if they still say money is NOT everything. dawg, money IS EVERYTHING.

  • @billboardnumber1

its ok my small minded friend, perhaps one day you will see money is nothing.

i cant blame you for your ways, everyone and everything has told you that money is everything so why shudnt you believe them? and why should you believe me when i say its truely and utterly nothing?

whatever makes you happy i feel i dont have to disprove someones reality for mine to be true.

  • @ddawg132 dawg i understand you collossal fool you deny it like you always do that's why you are bitter and you dont even want to admit that. look around you and see how superior they are over you coz they got money and you have NOTHING.

  • @billboardnumber1

I will not argue with you as it is near impossible to reason someone out of a thought they did not reason themselves into.

and actually im only 19 and my parents are so stupid rich its rediculus. so stop acting like you know whats what. money is nothing and this is coming from someone who has it.

  • @ddawg132 yeah do not argue with me because by the way you write (you cannot even put an apostrophe on your "i'm" and misspelled "ridiculous", so if you do not need money, you NEED formal education really bad because it seems like at 19 you do not have enough of it.

  • @billboardnumber1

Change of topic becuase you feel your in the wrong now, now personally attacking me and forgetting all about what the conversation is really about. go ahead and act like a give a shit about spelling on youtube haha. nice try. and your writing isnt 100% either and hopefully you know that. please if we are going to argue lets keep it relevant and at least somewhat intellectual otherwise its pointless.

  • @ddawg132 hmmmm - one usually wants to change the topic when he feels that his weakness is being yanked out. it is not an attack and it is not another topic, it is about what you do or dont have. and it is apparent that what you claim you do have is money but what you dont have is education and you're in denial. so it is indeed 100% relevant - it's ironic you talk about intellect but upon your own self conception you project that you don't have one...

  • @billboardnumber1

how about your fucking retarded and this isnt even fun anymore. it went from a conversation about the true worth of money to you trying to sound smarter then you are.. so suck a bag of dicks u homo erotic ass hat then read another vampire book and listen some to more miley cyrus songs.

  • @ddawg132 The truth usually hurts and the guilty always screams the loudest with the language being the foulest. You are to be sorry for. There are many schools in your area where a diploma could be got by you for free. Do school so your rich parents can be proud of you that at least one member of the family had been educated.

By the way, you should spell "you're" and not "your" (another educational offer from me to you in grammatical contraction...)

  • @billboardnumber1

I could beat you in a physical confrontation. I am also smarter.

    I win and you lose.

  • @ddawg132 LOL i love how you run out of intelligent conversation and resort to violence - very typical of rednecks and the uneducated. i feel sorry for your rich parents. they're money did not do you any good... :P

  • @billboardnumber1

    im better than you. sorry.

  • @ddawg132 keep telling yourself that. if it does make you feel superficially better. that's what they teach you in therapy classes .... lol.

  • @billboardnumber1

    i think therefore i am.

  • This song portrays our great country pefectly. It probably doesnt mean much to this generation but there was a tme when you had to work for your dreams, now all of your dreams are right under your nose, you just have to chose to take advantage it. Live every moment to the fullest

  • I wonder if this song title is a reference to the Pete Seeger song "Little Boxes", when he says "There's a green one and a blue one and a PINK one and a yellow one"

  • parts of this video were filmed in my hometown and my mother met him. Everyone who met him says he's a really sweet guy.

  • Great song! You gotta stand for something or you'll fall for anything.

  • @luhne123

    No way.

  • This video needs a little bit nudity

  • needs a mustang and a corvette in the video lol

  • bust fucking song ever i get a little teary eyed when i here this song then i listen to like a G6 the i dance
