It likes to find "ideals" that fit certain stereotypes (in this case, a racial one) and displays them for negative attention, like for jokes and laughs. The audience buys his CDs to begin with BECAUSE the media decided to showcase him.
You have to ask why 3,000 other Idol fallouts didn't make publicity like WH did (not to mention that he, unlike them, actually sang audible notes).

Furthermore, people like me wonder why famous singers like David Tao, Hu Ling, the boyband Tension (who were from, ahem, ahem, California) and Jay Chou are not as publicly noticeable like David Archuleta, Jordan Sparks and, ehe, William Hung are.

However, my point was, a major reason why William was spotlighted in the first place was because his display of character during the tryouts championed the negative "asian stereotype" that the US media often times uses to portray guys of mongoloid skin in the US.
You have to wonder why 3,000+ other poor auditioners didn't get showcased like WH did. Surely, something about him made him an icon for, as you put it, "good news"?
