I had the 6 button pads - had many consoles in my time, and NO pad beats Genesis 6 Button pad for fighting games imho. The D-Pad on them was perfect! :) The Playstation D-Pads are absolute sh!! for fighting games lol. Dunno what's with their durability either. Think it's all become about $ more than ever before...I still have a perfect working original PS1 pad...in the meantime I've had half a dozen 2nd generation Dual Shock Pads become unusable after a lot less use :/
I don't know about the U.S version of MKII on PS2 Midway Arcade Classics 2 for PS2...but as far as the PAL version goes, the PAL Genesis version is infinitely superior. The PAL version of MKII on MAC2 for PS2 has god-awful collision detection, the timer for Fatalities is wrong, and it plays NOTHING like the arcade...Whereas, though the Genisis version may be lacking in colour/detail/sound, the playing experience is what it should be.
Kintaro was insanely hard to beat in this game, the only way me or my friends could do it was to reduce the number of rounds to one and just jump around avoiding his attacks and try and land a few punchs and kicks while in the air, always took at least 5 or 6 attempts.
MK2 was just cheap I begged my parents for this game when hit the stores day 1 I got it my father bought for me I got out of school and there it was I played it and was like WTF after the 1st 2 matches I kept losing I passed the 1st mk but the 2nd no way it took me months to get to shao khan when did the fight was over so quick I got so sick of the game I gave it away to my cuzzin for nothing I will never bother with mk2 again I even played the one from PSN still fucking cheap.
i bought mk2 on sega for $70 when it first came out and still play it now its only 5 bucks on ps3 haha wtf mk2 and the new mk9 are best fighting games ever
Why do people always say that you need to press "start" on the genesis version to "switch between punches and kicks?" Start was for block, A was for punch (forward + punch = high punch), B was for lock kick, and C was for high kick. SF2 used start to switch between punch and kick. Also, as others have mentioned, the 32x version was far superior to the SNES in terms of gameplay.
I played the Genesis version a lot back in the day. Although I admit it is not as good as the SNES, 32x, or arcade, I found it enjoyable to play. (As long as you had the 6 button controller......) hahaha
Dude you seriously miss lots of points here... but is still a enjoyable video, take a look at the video about the 32x combo factor that i upload on my Supernescesario Channel... You will see why 32x is the best on 16 bits consoles minus the music factor; but hey!!! fighting games are about gameplay and comboing, isn it? Then in the 32 bits department, you also forgot to mention the psone version... And actually comparing 16 and 32 bits versions, with the ps2 version was kinda sooooo unfair!! xD
Best MK2 ever. Now, best old skool MK that is. Also the hardest of them all ! Arcade version is the good version. SNES one is decent. Genesis/MegaDrive version is utter garbage.
you didnt have to press start to switch between punches and kicks on the mega drive version, your confusing it with street fighter 2, have you actually played the mega drive version?
The ps3 version is absolutely fantastic. i gladly paid the money for it. i can get to shang tsung in about 15/20mins, but when it comes to kintaro its all down hill from there lol. so fucking hard!! :)
@FinalFantasyFan12100 : interesting. I realy spent almost an entire afternoon on trying to finish it. The classic "I started this and I WILL finish this" syndrome. Yesterday I figured that the difficulty level was messed with because even on lvl1 it still gets hard as hell after 4-5 enemies.
@w00tmc the only reason the game was hard for you is because you were playing the PS3 version. That version is designed to piss you off. They enhanced the difficulty by making Hard mode lv. 3 and Medium mode lv.1. On the Snes version i can breeze through the game until getting to Kintaro. but on the PS3 version I can't even get to shang tsung on the easiest difficulty. So the PS3 is to blame for the insane difficulty. :)
I had the Snes version and I loved it as far as I was concerned it was Arcade perfect as you could get it back then.
Also games back then from Arcade to home were conversions mostly rather than ports as the hardware was nowhere near as powerful as the Arcades back in those days.
By the time the 32x , Sega Saturn and PS1 versions came out MK2 was played out and newer 3D games is what people wanted. However now that retrogames are in get the best version you can afford =)
@reddeath555 I think his accent ramps up the hot factor even more LOL but anyway....I don't want him to get all uncomfortable so I'll leave it at that. The more important thing is he did a kick ass comparison vid :)
@modewr id say the saturn one was more like the ms-dos version. the 32x sounded just like the genesis except it had a few extra sounds. the graphics had a small amount of extra colour but to me it was just an enhanced genesis version
@NBAXXX : The reason is because the AI was made to eat your quarters (back when this was an arcade game) , you could never win with one coin. They never bothered changing the cheating AI when they ported the game to home consoles.
The 32x version was better than the saturn, 32x was a hacked version of the megadrive port. The classic collections are emulations of the arcade machine hardware, Just like Mame.
It was just a different experience. Some people are going to prefer MK's style and aesthetics over SF, nothing wrong with that. I know the hardcore trend is SF 4 LYFE and all, but people have their preferences.
I never understood why they switched the colors on Johnny Cage in the Snes version but beside that it was the best home version ...great review of this outstanding game
The Mega Drive version is definitely the best! It's by far the easiest, most enjoyable and the only one with bad ass drums in the music. Matt Furniss was a master in percussion and he did a much better job than Dan Fordan.
All the rest have the same dull, uninteresting soundtrack.
Im a MK fan for a long time now but I cant beat MKII...its fucking impossible....I mean, Ive beaten Mk1, MK3, MK Trilogy, MK4, MK DA, MK D; MKA and MKSM...but MKII is just tooooo hard
MKII's computer opponents were notorious for being cheap. So you had to find a weakness and be repetitive with it. Like with what he did with Baraka, he kept early jump kicking him and then the blades. I use the blades a lot more than he did, it works just as well.
I watched this whole thing but i couldn't hear which one he thought was best. The PS2 versions shorten the time for you to deliver fatalities, making it harder.
@brunobb1 The only really way to beat MK2 is to be repetitive with a certain pattern of moves (which may be considered cheap online) because the arcade version can predict every move you do most of the time and that makes it extremely unfair.
Uh...Midway Arcade Treasures 2 came out in 2004, and it was on more than just the PS2. It was on the XBOX and Gamecube. And sure the Genesis version's sound sucked, didn't change the fact it was still better from a gameplay perspective than the SNES version.
Nope, not from here. I had SNES and I knew that game backwards. I could walk through that game today, I memorized everyone's moves and fatalities and babalities and level fatalities. Even most of Shang Tsungs transformations. The SNES controller was the best, to this day. The moves flowed much more smoothly. Genesis had the better MK1 though.
This video is a lie, you claim to review all versions of MK2 but you actually skipped out on a lot of them. Maybe you only reviewed the console versions but yet you skipped on the Amiga, Sega Master, Sega 32X, Sega Saturn, and PlayStation 1 versions. Also you mention that MK2 for Midway Arcade Treasures 2 came out on the PS2 but you also failed to mention that it also came out on the GameCube and Xbox as well.
Mortal Kombat II for the Genesis was a good game. It may have not been up to par with the SNES or arcade but its still a classic. The SNES was released two years after the Genesis so it was more powerful. I give the Genesis props for what it accomplished.
There is one glitch in the ps3 version. During the ending cast list the music will stop completely. Any other glitches beyond that are arcade perfect.
As a Genesis owner I was VERY disappointed with MK2. I thought they would've learnt from MK1, and at least put in a better effort in regards to the audio! The visuals may not have been as good as the SNES, but they were still very strong, and the character movements were very fluid. The audio though (or lack thereof) was completely unacceptable! At least they didn't make the same mistake with MK3. It's just too bad MK3 sucked though...
i owned MK 1 and 2 for the snes, while all my friends had the genesis versions. they were the exact same game, only difference was the sound and graphics especially in MK1 were FAR superior to the genesis version, snes lacked the blood for MK1, but looked and sounded much closer to the arcade.
i have played the SNES and Sega versions, although segas graphics and sounds werent up to par, the gameplay was. the SNES was slower and the controls didnt feel right either.
I never understood the exaggeration of port comparisons. If you play MK2 on either the arcade, Genesis, 32X or SNES you're essentially playing the same game, no difference in gameplay. When people say one port is better, they mean it looks and sounds aesthetically better. I have a lot of good memories playing the good old Genesis version with a friend, but I have to admit the SNES was the best looking version hands down for me. Well, except when compared to the arcade that is.
somethin about super nintendo and sega genesis caused intense euphoria in me when i wuz little...these new systems just dont do it for me anymore i like playin them but it isnt the same
well both version to me are playable and the Genesis version is easier to play. The sound or the music is very crappy however compared to MK1 GEN and I personnaly prefer the snes version for that.
You OBVIOUSLY have no idea about what are you talking about. Don't say inaccurate things about the genesis version. The genesis version was a good version not better than snes but a good version + you don't change from kick to puch with the start button....before you say something DO an actual RESEARCH and don't lie...
i agree the genesis version was very awesome cuz it had the cheat menu and the fabled 'fregality' I LOVE IT... the only prob was that every character sounded the same with the "ugh" sound but the music was BYFAR better than the SNES cuz genesis had that bass sound like a dark version of the game...
@darkheart220982 I agree there were only two versions worth having and the Sega Megadrive version was one of them. I personally had the Super Nintendo version as back then a person could only afford one console. Although I have to say having played the Megadrive version later although it's not as colourful as the Snes version I prefer the control setup
I mean yo street fighter 2 they did such an amazing job when you compare it to the arcade, MK on the other hand....was never even close to the arcade...
thank God for MAME....
but still...SF2 4 LIFE thumbs up me people it's the truth!
Frankly I think the 32X version is better than the Super Nintendo version. It's not all about graphics and sound, it's about gameplay. The Super Nintendo MK1 and MK2 had delayed controls in comparison to the Sega versions.
I used to have it on snes and genesis , but today I got it on my old psx but I could not perform the kintaro fatality with shang tsung .. can you tell me what the hell is going on with the psx version ??
I've always had a poblem with MK 2 AI. Some moves never work against the computer while some others never miss. I wish they would release a version with upgraded AI.
I had the 6 button pads - had many consoles in my time, and NO pad beats Genesis 6 Button pad for fighting games imho. When people say one port is better, they mean it looks and sounds aesthetically better. I have a lot of good memories playing the good old Genesis version with a friend, but I have to admit the SNES was the best looking version hands down for me. Well, except when compared to the arcade that is.

@KimballBerht
Some of us just get used to one machine. I played Genesis a lot when it came out but I ended up buying a Super Nintendo.

Looks like genesis went with better gameplay then sound on MK2,as opposed to the SNES version.

Get your facts STRAIGHT
Genesis 3-button had for its controls
A-Punch
B-Low Kick
C-High Kick
Start-Block
The 'Start for P/K' is from street fighter 2!
Snes was the most accurate
Genesis has near perfect music.
You don't even have the Game Boy,Game Gear,Master System,Amiga,PC/DOS,And the versions with MK:Shaolin Monks

*SIGH* ........Such a fan boy. The Genesis version was twice as good as the Snes version.
bigwillystyle1234567 2 years ago
yea the genesis was close to snes version
spider486 2 years ago
well both version to me are playable and the Genesis version is easier to play. The sound or the music is very crappy however compared to MK1 GEN and I personnaly prefer the snes version for that.

What about the hidden version that came with Shaolin Monks?

I think the hidden version in Shaolin Monks is the same version as the one in Midway Arcade Treasures 2.

You OBVIOUSLY have no idea about what are you talking about. Don't say inaccurate things about the genesis version. The genesis version was a good version not better than snes but a good version + you don't change from kick to puch with the start button....before you say something DO an actual RESEARCH and don't lie...

i agree the genesis version was very awesome cuz it had the cheat menu and the fabled 'fregality' I LOVE IT... the only prob was that every character sounded the same with the "ugh" sound but the music was BYFAR better than the SNES cuz genesis had that bass sound like a dark version of the game...
xxslaytanicxx 2 years ago
@darkheart220982 I agree there were only two versions worth having and the Sega Megadrive version was one of them. I personally had the Super Nintendo version as back then a person could only afford one console. Although I have to say having played the Megadrive version later although it's not as colourful as the Snes version I prefer the control setup

@darkheart220982
Mk2 on Sega 2 was pretty bad..
I mean yo street fighter 2 they did such an amazing job when you compare it to the arcade, MK on the other hand....was never even close to the arcade...

I think the SNES version is the best one.
ATDCraigekiteam 2 years ago 3
Frankly I think the 32X version is better than the Super Nintendo version. It's not all about graphics and sound, it's about gameplay. The Super Nintendo MK1 and MK2 had delayed controls in comparison to the Sega versions.
Yes, it did.

I've always had a poblem with MK 2 AI. Some moves never work against the computer while some others never miss. I wish they would release a version with upgraded AI.
