The reason one cannot progress past level 1-2 with this code is that the high number of enemies causes the game engine to ignore certain other objects in the level data. The elevators are an obvious example, but this also includes the invisible objects that specify pipe destinations and warp zones. I'm a bit surprised that levels are not more fundamentally broken here.
