very informative. i know that dioxin is a by-product of bleaching and present in trace amounts in disposables and is so toxic it is outlawed in many countries. what are the other 2 chemicals? how do they end up in the diapers and why are they harmful? thank you.
I've only been following you for about a month and I had no idea about your background knowledge on the environment. This video reassures my decision to cloth diaper my baby when they come into this world. Thanks!
i was wondering if you could do a video on your routine of washing your cloth diapers? a lot of videos i've seen you dont really touch anything because its a top loading washer so i was wondering how you do it with a front loader. thanks i love your videos and all the info you put out there!
This is a really good video. You make some very good points. I like the point that you make about us not throwing away our knickers every time we wear them. Very true- hadn't really thought about that!
Oh, and another "benefit" of cloth diapers aside from all of the very real and practical ones you mentioned are that they are so stinkin' cute! They come in so many colors, patterns, and styles--and to think I am saving money and the environment, too! I would probably choose to cloth diaper just on the cute factor alone! LOL! Thanks again for this awesome video!
I am appalled by how many people say they don't care that they are supposed to dispose of the solid waste in disposable diapers before throwing them away. People seriously don't care? It's too much of an inconvenience to do the right thing? I will never forget the first time I went to a grocery story in the UK. I was shocked that they charge people for plastic grocery bags. Now I get it. Everyone brings reusable ones! It is amazing what us Americans are willing to sacrifice for "convenience!"
Thank you for this video! Finally someone that knows the facts! I think it is such a shame that so many people don't even consider cloth diapers or assume they will be too much work. They are not more work at all and with all the benefits of them I can't believe most people are still using disposables.
cont... My hubby is a sailer, so he brings lots of fish with him every time he comes home, we have our lifestyle changed dramatically since I watched this! Because of you, Carla. Thank you so much!! And I even now watch this video every once in a while as a reminder.. Those numbers are just scary!
It really scares the crap out of me that so many people are actually NOT thinking about what's going to happen to our world in xx years, if we do not CHANGE our way of living now.. I saw your video for the first time a couple of months ago. Since then I started cloth diapering. I only buy organic food, I buy organic clothes for my daugter, I recycle, I actually have hens (chicken??:P) that give me eggs, I buy milk and meat from a farmer, I use recycling bag for my groceries ....
Thank you!! I thought I was the only one who noticed that size 2 font on the package that calls fort dumping solids into the toilet before disposing the diaper. lol.. I don't have kids, but I have 9 nieces and nephews and all used disposables. I'm not a fan. Then there's the fact that I'm not paying $25 for diapers that will only be used once and won't last a week. I'm cheap like that. haha.. Then there's the environmental aspect of it. The thought of decomposing poopy diapers turns my stomach
you live in oregon too. can you please tell me any stores around southern oregon that sales cloth diapers. we are going to buy online but I would love to acutally go to a store and look and hold each brand of cloth diaper :) thank you carla.
@connarviper Check out ecototsboutique dotty com. They are a store in Grants Pass, OR and are retailers of both Fuzzibunz and Bumgenius, plus others. Hope that helps! :)
thanks im not a mom yet (well this is my first year of college) but im really interested in baby stuff and how things suchas cloth diapers can benefit the enviornmet because when im older i want to be as GREEN as possible. thanksfor the advice if i was a mom i wouldnt want to use disposable if they have harmful chemicals in them thanks for the advice
Just reached this video. It is wonderful! While my fiance and I chose to disposable diaper our first child, my fiance was initially wanting to cloth diaper. But as I'm the one that is around the majority of the time I chose the other rout. However with our next child I won't be in school and working I plan to investigate cding more!
Finally someone who knows what they are talking about when making a video on this hot topic. We cloth diaper our baby for many of the same reasons and wish more people would grow up so to speak and get over the "ew" factor of cloth diapers. It's not that big of a deal people! You can also get cloth diaper services if you are that grossed out! Anyone considering making the change, give it a lot of thought.. YOUR BABY IS WORTH IT! :) Happy diapering.
I actually think you changed my mind about it. When I have my next baby, I would cloth diaper and put a disposable on only when we are leaving the house...thanks! I didn't realize about the chemicals, and I never thought of the poisons in the soil at the landfill...yuck.
I posted your video on my facebook page to explain to people why I am choosing to do cloth diapers. Some people are down right rude/mean when they make comments about my choice but your video explains my reasons to them better than I ever could.
"This really concerns me!" my favorite line...lol. really great post! i'm TTC as a single mum & planned to cloth diaper & EC for financial reasons, but the more i research, the more i'm convinced that it's unhealthy for the environment and my potential future children to use disposables. my overprotective big brother (and father of 3) thinks it's crazy and making more work for myself, so hearing someone with professional experience in this field AND a passion for the subject is very helpful
We are making the switch to cloth this very day. I completely agree, no parent should be made to feel that they MUST do something with their child just because that's what most people do. It took me months to figure out that the biggest gift I coud give to my son was to trust my own instincts. I "feel" better cloth diapering already and really hopes this works for us. Thanks for these videos! They are very encouraging for people like myself :))
I think this is hands down the most informative vlog I have seen! I love how you incorporate your knowledge and expertise and really feel like you tell both sides of the story. We have been contemplating whether or not to cloth diaper, and after this video there is no question to me that cloth diapering is the only answer for me!
...My question is, prefold or pockets? I like pockets better because of their fit and the fact that they keep a little of pee away from the skin with the microfiber, but prefold seem to be more environmentally correct (when using the diapering services) and cheaper. Do you have any info on that? I know a baby who uses prefold cloth diapers and his parents started using disposable at night because he'd wake up every time he peed during the night. Do you know if that happens with pockets? thanks
Thank you for such an informative video. I am doing research on the subject. I am more inclined to use cloth diaper because of the environmental damage. But I was told about the increasing amount of water used to wash and dry the diapers and it being more wasteful or as wasteful as using disposable. I found it hard to believe and that's why I'm researching. And your video was the most reasonable piece of information I've found so far...
So, now that you've been diapering, which diapers are your favorites? I'm not due for five more months so I'm trying to get some diaper reviews. I want to avoid the bad, and get only the good, if possible :)
Wow--who knew that throwing away poo in a disposable was illegal??? Certainly not me!!! Wow...lots of law-breakers out there who didn't even know they were doing it. It's funny because messing with the poo is the number 1 objection I get when I tell people I'm planning to cloth diaper. Thank you so much for this informative video! It really helps me feel more confident about my decision to cloth diaper.
This was super informative! I am in the process of researching cloth diapies for our future kiddos (We are TTC #2). My 16 month old is just starting potty training. It pissed me off when I found out that children were getting CHEMICALLY BURNT from Pampers Dry Max which is what we have been using. We used them because my daughter is a heavy wetter and leaks through diapers daily.
Again, thanks so much! This makes me even more confident in our decision.
I too am an Oregonian. I wish you would have seen this video out 15 years ago. I did use cloth on my first child, but found it easier to use disposable with my subsequent two children. I agree 100% with everything you said....but since I am done with my baby days, I will only have the opputunity to push for this with my grandchildren. It disgusts me when I read about or watch things about our land fields!!! My husband is a Recycle truck driver and our family recycles EVERTHING! There is no excu
totally agree with everything you say cloth is so much better and if you use fleece liners the baby's skin stays dry anyway ,also baby can get nappy rash with disposibles aswell thats what abrrier cream is for
I am watching this video again to reinforce my cloth diapering decision... you have amazing facts here and this is a great video, and seriously, you are the person that got me to consider cloth diapers in the first place... I watched this video on 1/25 and bought my first cloth diapers on 2/3 :) Love you hun !
Great video, especially about the amount of crude oil actually used!! I have been using cloth diapers for about 6 months on my 12 month old and made the switch for eco & enviro reasons.. plus they are really cute!!! good luck.... i dont mind doing it, except obviously the poo factor YUCK! and once she was on solids well, even grosser, but I still stand by my decision... i have pretty much gotten all my diapers CHEAPER on Ebay... and they are all great diapers, $5 a piece.

Hubby and I are looking into cloth diapering. We are getting educated now so that we can have all the pros and cons for both ways. I honestly think we are going to cloth diaper. Have you made more videos for cloth diapers and on the ones you have chose and why? I am looking on YT everyday to see reviews of the different ones.
I tryed Cloth diapers with my first child, they leaked like crazy. I even used a doubler. Then it took forever to dry and they smelled bad. I guess I was young and didn't know exactly what I was doing and maybe I didn't have the right kind of covers and they were extreamly bulky. I did uise them when my son got diareah to save on diapers though but I mostly used disposables. I would like to give them another shot when I have another baby, I am not sure how to do it and what kind to use.
Kudos to you on your decision to use cloth diapers. That's great! The plus side to using cloth diapers is that your baby will potty train faster and sooner than if he or she were in disposables, plus you can use the cloth diapers, wash them, and then use them again. Also, I think cloth diapers are far more comfortable on a baby's bottom than any disposable diaper. The only down side to using cloth diapers is that they're not as absorbent as disposables, so you have to change them right away.
My name is Lucille, and I just wanted to say GREAT VIDEO!
I myself have made all of my cloth diapers from the Ritas Rump Pocket pattern and use thirsties and bummis covers. I used to use disposables, until I learned about all of the nasty chemicals!
i would love to see a more video's about cloth diapers ( how to put them on , the steps involved in cleaning ect pretty much anything (I'm TTC ) but would still like to know more about cloth diapers because that is the direction hubby and i are leaning toward once we do have our little one.
Excellent excellent points! I posted this on my facebook...when I first started researching and considering cloth diapering I got so many nasty comments...I made the decision alone and have been doign it ever since...I love it and I keep trying to convince other people to...and the dangers that go along with disposables, but people just dont get it.
i totally agree with you, even though i am not wanting to have children for another several years because i am only 17, i know i am wanting to home birth and use cloth diapers and all my friends think i am crazy for wanting to do so, And in my opinion cloth diapers well "nappies" where i live can be cuter than regular ones because they come in so many patterns and colours :D
I'm researching cloth diapers right now. I'm SO EXCITED and really want to start using them but my husband is not with me! So...that's where I am stuck right now. Great video!
Hey, I looked on my pack of diapers, It has nothing about throwing the poo in the toilet and nothing about it being against the law.??? Just wondering where you seen that at and what brand i use parents choice and huggies ,Pure and Naturals.
Wow I really love your outlook on this subject. I have been using disposable diapers with my daughter. She's 2 now and close to being potty trained so it's too late to switch now, but with any more children that I have, I am definitely going to give cloth diapers a try!
Thank you!!! I can't wait to show this to my Fiance! I'm the one that has decided to cloth diaper and he thinks that no one will care and they might even go get disposable diapers. If that's the case then they wont be watching him/her (7wks 2days pg :)). Again Thank you for all your great information it's really going to help the next time I need to defend my point of view!
I did not receive support from my mother or husband, so my cloth diaper experience was very short. We did however use chlorine free disposable religiously. You start to talk about them a little bit and just mentioned them being more expensive than regular disposables. Do they have some of the scary chemicals in them too? We mostly used Earth's Best as I always was able to get them on sale, but occasionally Seventh Generation.
We've already decided to go for cloth diapers and your video just re-ensure us that going for cloth is definitely a great choice!!! One brand I would love for you to include in your review is GroBaby. I've seen so many great review about it and I am 90% of sure that we will eventually use this brand. Love you know what you think.
Ok, first of all...this video should be a youtube featured video on everyone's home page. You make your points SO clear, SO factual and SO friendly. Thank YOU.
As a hawaii resident I'd also like to apologize to you and your state for dealing with "our" waste. FYI I make less than one 50gal container of trash a month, and am DEFINITELY using clothe diapers throughout!
Also, in a previous video u mentioned going to a fabric store, do you sew? You can MAKE your own cloth diapers REALLY CHEAP! :)
i trust your knowledge in the chemical department however cloth nappies have a higher risk for skin rashes due too the type of detergents people use sometimes its trial and era i used natural detergents still my bubs got rashes from some of those detergents i think if you were too be cleaning them would have too be boiled and then again using more power resources
Rashes can happen with both Cloth and Disposable diapers. You can use different liners or switch detergent. You can also change the diapers more often or use a cloth diaper safe barrier cream.
As far as the increased water/energy usage, I'd rather increase my usage of renewable resources like water than increase the amount of trash in landfills. The two are not comparable side effects to me.
@bessie3030 There are plenty of detergents available that don't cause rashes, and most rashes were caused by the old "plastic pants" our parents used, because they prevented gas exchange and created the perfect environment for yeast to grow in. With modern cloth diapers, there are far fewer incidents of diaper rash (if you use detergents that are free and clear of additives like perfumes, dyes, optical brighteners, and other stuff that shouldn't be on baby's skin anyway).
WOW that was deep!! Can you demonstrate how to change a disposable diaper when you have a chance? Now that I have seen this video I will not be using them. You know It's amazing that the FDA would approve and authorize the use of them! I also do not trust the medication that doctors give due to the chemicals in them so I plan to deliver naturally. Thank you for taking the time to educate so many individuals!!!
I thought your point about the chemicals in disposable diapers was very interesting -not something I had considered. I assume you have compared them with those in the detergent you would be washing the diapers in or is it possible to boil wash without detergent?
I suppose there is also the option to reduce the concentration of chemicals from detergent by using less detergent/extra rinse.
(I'm a chemist but have no prior knowledge on this =) )
Hmm, well there wasn't even a question in my mind that I was going to use disposable but I may reconsider after watching this! Thanks for the info. I just don't know if I can do it or not but other women do it everyday! So why can't I?
I've been using cloth for over 2 years now and I love them. Disposables are full of the nasty chemicals you talked about and I hate how they smell! Just walking through the diaper isle is gross. Thanks for your vid.
As a nanny, I'd totally use cloth on the charges, had the family chosen to.
Just making a point that even if you don't have family members for care givers doesn't mean you can't do cloth. Even part time cloth would be better for the environment and the health of our children.
Thanks for your video. It is reassuring to hear someone who has experience with those chemicals talk about the concerns regarding them and disposable diapers. I'm totally new to cloth and am starting with gdiapers soon. I'm going to find your next video and watch it too!
I'm just wondering, do you know if there are different chemical used among different brands of disposable diapers? And if so which one do you think has the least amount of chemicals. Thanks for all of the great facts!!! Also, what do you thing of gdiapers that are flushable? My cousin is planning on using them.
@Jenkins3Fam: Most companies keep their 'cocktail' a secret. But the dioxin will be in any diapers that are WHITE because it's a byproduct of bleaching, and the others will be found in the stay dry gel that forms when the diaper is wet.
As far as the flushable gdiapers, it seems like they be pretty hard on a private septic system, but if you're hooked up to the public water system, everything dissolves or is comparable to toilet paper. They are more spendy though. :)
Wow, great video!!! I will be a SAHM and have also made the choice to go cloth. Like you said, everyone has their own reasons, and for us our first reason was simply the cost of buying disposables all the time, but now that I know all this great info you have just given us, you have completely reassured my decision to use cloth with even more great reasons to use them. I am looking forward to your next video about diapers and very anxious to hear the ones on your short list, the pros and cons
hey carla. i totally support your decision to use cloth diapers. i grew up around them . and with my daughter, we used those new diapers where you use an insert in the cloth diaper and you can flush it! i love them!!!!
Hey, great video. I was cloth diapered as a kid and hope to do the same when I eventually have children. I was just wondering if the same chemicals you talked about in this video are also in sanitation pads and tampons? If so, you have me slightly worried!
@Parkerfur: I've heard a lot of people mention that daycares are not willing to accept children in cloth diapers. It seams so crazy to me - especially since some diapers systems like Gro Baby have a cloth shell but a disposable liner. You just toss the liner, snap in a new one with the same shell and you're good to go. Boggles my mind why they can't handle that. :)
Great information for all of those looking into this information and providing the environmental facts associated with disposable diapers. My husband and I are planning to use a mix of cloth and disposable. Since we will both still be working full time we will be using disposables for the 8 hours the baby is at daycare and then cloth the remainder of the time. We can see the environmental impact as well as well as the health impact that disposable diapers cause... however we just can't cont..
Hello! Thank you very much for sharing all of this useful information with us, youtube-watchers. I have been thinking about this issue for some time and it's been helpful to hear your findings, given that you are an environmental engineer. And please don't feel bad about potentially offending people who disagree. You are giving the facts; there is nothing that should offend people about that.
Thank you for the very important info on why you choose cloth diapers over disposable. I think it's good to at least get people thinking about the choices they make as consumers, and how those decisions effect the planet in the long run. I used disposable diapers exclusively for my son, but would like to try cloth diapers for my daughter due this May. The cloth diapers out now certainly make the decision easier, and I look forward to your videos on which you think are best. Thanks again!!!
can you imagine what we could do if more people cloth diapered, I myself have decided to cloth diaper with this baby and i have a friend who actually makes cloth diapers! ill post her website on her wall, she also makes cloth pads for the mommies too... I completely agree with CDing!
@Colettereyes6: I'm glad that CD is catching on again. Hopefull their use will continue to increase. Thanks for posting your friend's website - I'll check it out!
@thebubblelush I think the choice to cloth diaper is wonderful. I'm not sure if you mentioned it or not, but are you going to be making your own cloth diapers? If so, will you post a how to video? thanks :)
if anyone watches thegracediaries.......she made her own clothe diapers! im not sure how much all the things cost! but you can check her out and ask her! plus...if your prego its a little project to keep you busy :)
my daughter is 18 months and I have been thinking of swapping her to cloth for a while now....the only issue is that initial expense and I can't seem to get my hubby onboard. However, when we have baby #2 we are for sure cloth diapering!
@TrulyBlessed5586: Keep in mind that most One Size systems would fit your daughter now and still be able to be used with future children. There are lots of daddy friendly systems like the flushable inserts with gdiapers. Besides - after 18 months of diaper duty he's seen everything. I think it's harder to convince new dads that are still scared of changing diapers that rinsing poopy diapers 'isn't that bad' *wink* Good Luck!
This was the most informative cloth diaper video ever! I was already seriously considering going to cloth diapers but I am now officially convinced! I will definitely be sharing this information with my friends and family so that they too can be informed! I look forward to more videos on this topic! Thanks again for taking the time to share this with us!
Thanks to you, I have a renewed desire to get my son (who was formerly in cloth) back into cloth diapers for the remainder of his diapering days, and I will be purchasing cloth training pants for him once he starts potty training. I cannot tell you how easy it is once you get used to it. And now it will be easier for me to be motivated to cloth diaper my daughter full time. Thanks so much for doing this video!
I can't wait to hear about the different brands cause thats the part i find confusing. I'd hate to buy a heap of one only to find i hate them. I think i may use a combination of both, i was gonna go disposable but the newer style clothies are growing on me cause they're really cute lol
Not to mention the benefits to baby's skin. We rent and don't have a washer/dryer in house so I researched diaper services. There is a service in our city that provides 80 diapers weekly for $44 so its still a savings.
Thank you for making this video. I plan to cloth diaper (for the most part) my baby as well, and just to hear some of your reasons was very insightful. Also the background you have with your work makes it even more important to hear. Again, thank you for this information, it really helps me see that my choice to cloth diaper, although not popular, is the right choice! :) Keep up the awesome videos!
Ok, now that I am done. I wanted to cloth diaper but my husband didn't. Anyway, another woman on a message board I visit was cloth diapering but then stopped because she said it didn't hold enough during the night. So, I think even though some may have the intention to cloth, it doesn't always work out I guess. If we have another baby, I would like to try to cloth to see how it would work out. Please let us know how it works out for you!
Very interesting. Brent and I would love to cloth diaper but we also realize that it's not something that we could stick to 100 percent. However that doesn't mean it's not something we'll do in our home. You brought up some interesting points (not that I agree with all of them) I see where you job effects your daily life. I look forward to the next vlog on this topic! :) *Thanks for doing all the research for those of us who are too lazy to do that much digging.
I think cloth diapering is a wonderful thing. I'm totally sold except for one thing. My mom always says that when she used cloth diapers on me (granted, 29 years ago), I had horrible skin reactions if I was wet for any amount of time, and no matter how many times a day she changed me. I hope they've come up with some kind of natural fiber that is more moisture-wicking than the old school cloth diapers, because I'd love to use them. Any thoughts?
@Hawkeyegirl2003: Back 20-30 years, cloth diapers were mainly prefold cotton with plastic covers. Nowadays you have different fabrics available in your cloth diapers - such as fleece liners in most pockets diapers or microfiber inserts. Regardless, you still need to change wet diapers promptly and this is even more important with cloth diapering. I'll make sure to discuss this! :)
I used cloth and my friends and I had babies at diff times and shared them. Some may think its gross but they were well washed and I used new inserts. I also used biodegradable overlays that can be flushed down the loo that held the poo. I did use disposables (tho natures own that degrade faster) at night as they hold alot more & enabled my children to sleep thro the night from 6 wks. Cloth ones leaked. Dunno what types u get over there, I used loads of diff brands tho mainly preferred Kushies.
wow, thanks for all that info! you totally bought me...I think when I have a baby I will be using cloth diapers too...either way you have to mess with the poo, so I'm sure it can't get any grosser.
Many people may get grossed out by the poop, but like you said, you actually are supposed to dispose of the poop BEFORE throwing away the diaper, but of course most people don't.
We've also decided on Cloth Diapering for some of the same reasons. We just like the idea of using them for multiple children.
I totally agree i havent gotten my BFP yet but i had already made the decision to use cloth diapers thanks for the additional information ...isnt crazy how much money we waste...WOW..i had no idea look forward to watching more of your informational vids
Does it defeat the purpose to use a diaper service? I am still fairly naive about cloth diapering but the thing that grosses me out a little is the poo in the washer. Thanks for the info!
you could dumb the poo in the toilet before you put the daiper in the washer. I guess that would not fully work though if it was runny poo though. :-(
@cjlinkster: Diaper services typically have a more efficient use of their wash water because of the load size - so from a water perspective, I think they're fine. You end up paying a little more because you're renting something long term, but you don't have to launder them
Bumgenius makes a great sprayer that hooks up to the side of the toilet and rinses the poo right into the toilet. Even works for the runny stuff! :)
Cloth diapering is prob ok if you work part time but me being full time I don't see it possible for me. I already do 4-5 loads of laundry of our clothes linens ella's clothes etc. BUT I would like to cloth diaper if I could. Disposable diapering is def bad for the enviroment and fills the landfills up. Great video :)
Thanks for your video. It was filled with GREAT information. I want to cloth diaper b/c of cost reasons. My husband thinks it's totally gross and doesn't want me to use CD. I'm going to show him your video when he comes home from work so he knows ALL the facts! maybe this will help to change his mind.
wow!! very educational!! i think i needed to hear all this i never really thought about all this!!!!! this really makes me want to cloth diaper my next baby!!
When I conceive I have already planned to use reusable, I care very much for the environment but I never knew just how bad disposable were! They're really scary statistics!
Wow! I really didn't know all that bad stuff want into diapers. I'm really looking forward to your next video. so my hubby and I can make are decision about diapers.
Really look forward to this series! We've been struggling with to cloth or not to cloth. I'm still not sure if it'll work for us but at least this will educate us a little more =)
We had already had decided to cloth diaper, number one i'm chemical sensitive enough that my parents had to cloth diaper me or i'd break out in a blistering rash so we really didn't want to risk it.Final deciding factor we are students we don't have 2-3,000 extra dollars sitting around.
Nice to some one else getting the word out about cloth diapers even if our reasons are a little different.
Awesome video! I new there was crappy stuff in the disposable ones but didnt know exactly and was too lazy to research. haha But we are still cloth diapering for the most part and I completely agree with why you guys chose to cloth diaper.
im a disposable user....seems it next to near impossible to get cloth here...i was interested and did look into it wen i was first expecting....love the video....
Great video, people and new mothers need to know this stuff!! what do you suggest or use to wash your clothes in liked detergent /fabric softener that is better for your skin no chemicals.
My sister cloth diapers and I love how easy it really is.
I plan on cloth diapering when we conceive. I didnt cloth diaper my son. I was 19 when I had him and had NO education on that sort of thing. SO I just went with what I was told.
If I had him today I would have cloth diapered!
Anyways your video rocks mama and your totally right .. Every parent needs to do what they are comfortable with!.
very educational, I didn't cloth diaper, but I really see your point and like you said, as parents we shouldn't do anything we are not comfortable with, this is your child and you do what you feel is best for them :D Congrats on your pregnancy :D
That is a really informed answer for why you are choosing to cloth diaper. I admire your research and because of this I am also going to choose cloth diapering for my future babies. Thanks Carla!!
Wow! That is so interesting! I knew that diposable nappies wern't good for the environment but I had no idea what was in them or why they were so bad. The next baby we have Im so using cloth nappies! Thanks for sharing!
I think you have very good reasons for cloth diapering. I didn't cloth diaper with Neal but I might try it when my fiance and I decide to have #2 lol.
very informative. i know that dioxin is a by-product of bleaching and present in trace amounts in disposables and is so toxic it is outlawed in many countries. what are the other 2 chemicals? how do they end up in the diapers and why are they harmful? thank you.

I used to think cloth diapering was a bit old- fashioned, but thanks for opening my mind up to it. :)

Amber146 1 year ago

Thank you for this priceless knowledge.

...My question is, prefold or pockets?

It really helps me feel more confident about my decision to cloth diaper.
beingpregoissurreal 1 year ago
This was super informative! I am in the process of researching cloth diapies for our future kiddos (We are TTC #2). My 16 month old is just starting potty training. It pissed me off when I found out that children were getting CHEMICALLY BURNT from Pampers Dry Max which is what we have been using. We used them because my daughter is a heavy wetter and leaks through diapers daily.
Again, thanks so much! This makes me even more confident in our decision.

The only down side to using cloth diapers is that they're not as absorbent as disposables, so you have to change them right away.

i totally agree with you, even though i am not wanting to have children for another several years because i am only 17, i know i am wanting to home birth and use cloth diapers and all my friends think i am crazy for wanting to do so, And in my opinion cloth diapers well "nappies" where i live can be cuter than regular ones because they come in so many patterns and colours :D

i trust your knowledge in the chemical department however cloth nappies have a higher risk for skin rashes due too the type of detergents people use sometimes its trial and era i used natural detergents still my bubs got rashes from some of those detergents i think if you were too be cleaning them would have too be boiled and then again using more power resources
bessie3030 2 years ago
Rashes can happen with both Cloth and Disposable diapers. You can use different liners or switch detergent. You can also change the diapers more often or use a cloth diaper safe barrier cream.
As far as the increased water/energy usage, I'd rather increase my usage of renewable resources like water than increase the amount of trash in landfills. The two are not comparable side effects to me.
thebubblelush 2 years ago 14
@bessie3030 There are plenty of detergents available that don't cause rashes, and most rashes were caused by the old "plastic pants" our parents used, because they prevented gas exchange and created the perfect environment for yeast to grow in. With modern cloth diapers, there are far fewer incidents of diaper rash (if you use detergents that are free and clear of additives like perfumes, dyes, optical brighteners, and other stuff that shouldn't be on baby's skin anyway).
dw9559 10 months ago
WOW that was deep!! Can you demonstrate how to change a disposable diaper when you have a chance? Now that I have seen this video I will not be using them. You know It's amazing that the FDA would approve and authorize the use of them! I also do not trust the medication that doctors give due to the chemicals in them so I plan to deliver naturally. Thank you for taking the time to educate so many individuals!!!
Magzwifey1no2 2 years ago
I thought your point about the chemicals in disposable diapers was very interesting -not something I had considered. I assume you have compared them with those in the detergent you would be washing the diapers in or is it possible to boil wash without detergent?
I suppose there is also the option to reduce the concentration of chemicals from detergent by using less detergent/extra rinse.
(I'm a chemist but have no prior knowledge on this =) )
7777catastrophe 2 years ago
Hmm, well there wasn't even a question in my mind that I was going to use disposable but I may reconsider after watching this! Thanks for the info. I just don't know if I can do it or not but other women do it everyday! So why can't I?

Awesome video!!
As a nanny, I'd totally use cloth on the charges, had the family chosen to.
Just making a point that even if you don't have family members for care givers doesn't mean you can't do cloth. Even part time cloth would be better for the environment and the health of our children.
36hesperia36 2 years ago
Thanks for your video. It is reassuring to hear someone who has experience with those chemicals talk about the concerns regarding them and disposable diapers. I'm totally new to cloth and am starting with gdiapers soon. I'm going to find your next video and watch it too!
Beleza61 2 years ago
Thanks for the info. on the gdiapers and chemicals!! I'm just glad parents have options now and can make a choice that will fit their family.
Jenkins3Fam 2 years ago
I'm just wondering, do you know if there are different chemical used among different brands of disposable diapers? And if so which one do you think has the least amount of chemicals. Thanks for all of the great facts!!! Also, what do you thing of gdiapers that are flushable? My cousin is planning on using them.
Jenkins3Fam 2 years ago
@Jenkins3Fam: Most companies keep their 'cocktail' a secret. But the dioxin will be in any diapers that are WHITE because it's a byproduct of bleaching, and the others will be found in the stay dry gel that forms when the diaper is wet.
As far as the flushable gdiapers, it seems like they be pretty hard on a private septic system, but if you're hooked up to the public water system, everything dissolves or is comparable to toilet paper. They are more spendy though. :)

Wow, great video!!! I will be a SAHM and have also made the choice to go cloth. use cloth at our daycare. So we are doing what we can. At least we are doing a bit more than those just using disposables.
Parkerfur 2 years ago

Thank you for the very important info on why you choose cloth diapers over disposable. I think it's good to at least get people thinking about the choices they make as consumers, and how those decisions effect the planet in the long run.

Any thoughts?
hawkeyegirl2003 2 years ago

Dunno what types u get over there, I used loads of diff brands tho mainly preferred Kushies.

wow, thanks for all that info! you totally bought me...I think when I have a baby I will be using cloth diapers too...either way you have to mess with the poo, so I'm sure it can't get any grosser.
ashikashi786 2 years ago
Many people may get grossed out by the poop, but like you said, you actually are supposed to dispose of the poop BEFORE throwing away the diaper, but of course most people don't.
We've also decided on Cloth Diapering for some of the same reasons. We just like the idea of using them for multiple children.

Does it defeat the purpose to use a diaper service? I am still fairly naive about cloth diapering but the thing that grosses me out a little is the poo in the washer. Thanks for the info!
cjlinkster 2 years ago
you could dumb the poo in the toilet before you put the daiper in the washer. I guess that would not fully work though if it was runny poo though. :-(

woops meant to say dump rather than dumb
Elizabeth01010101 2 years ago
@cjlinkster: Diaper services typically have a more efficient use of their wash water because of the load size - so from a water perspective, I think they're fine. You end up paying a little more because you're renting something long term, but you don't have to launder them
Bumgenius makes a great sprayer that hooks up to the side of the toilet and rinses the poo right into the toilet. Even works for the runny stuff! :)
I don't want poo in my washer either *wink*

wow.. thanks for the info.. I think I am gonna use cloth diapers when I have my little one too I think! wow.. crazy
also.. I know what you mean by hanging your wet clothes already.. I am 5'10" and I never ever dry my jeans in fear of shrinking..lol.
Thanks carla.. this was very informative!

I want to use cloth too, like 99% the time...but I'm sure disposable ones will be easier if we're traveling or something. My mom used cloth on me :)
suezq4369 2 years ago
we use cloth 99% of the time, over night we use a disposable and if we are on vacation :) its possible :)

Great video, people and new mothers need to know this stuff!! what do you suggest or use to wash your clothes in liked detergent /fabric softener that is better for your skin no chemicals.
Thank you!

Thank you so much for this video !!
You are sooo informative.. Thank you !!

I think you have very good reasons for cloth diapering. I didn't cloth diaper with Neal but I might try it when my fiance and I decide to have #2 lol.

how many should i get?
stirfry2471 2 years ago
It depends on how often you want to wash them. They suggest 24-36 - which would be washing every other day to every third day. :)
