@mrpsb7 24p means 24fps with progressive-scan frames. 60i means 60 interlaced fps. 24fps can happen with interlaced or progressive frames, which affects everything but especially alters how speed changes and speed ramping are done. Interlaced frames slow down better because there are more partial-frame fields available for blending.
Apple motion looks like it wins, but it is chopy, it is only frame blending, no actual effects, so it is clearest, but also looks a bit chopy if you watch closely.
@ultraret No, this was made before FCPX. It's Motion by Apple (another app) and it has its own interpolation settings. A version of Motion's Optical Flow setting made its way into FCPX but it's not the same thing. Shutter was 1/1250 (that info has been added to the description).
What shutter speed did you shoot at? From what I understand, these faux 1000fps plugins work best with really defined edges for the program to re-draw. The cleanest footage I've seen is like a skater flying through the air with just the sky in the background. High shutter speed would reduce blur, therefore retain defined edges and work better. In theory.
Cool - thanks for that comparison -- I wonder what it would look like if you did the 60p to 24p conform (40% speed) and then ran it through twixtor to drop it down to 20% (but it's only doing every other frame interpolation, so it might do much better than from the 60p all with twixtor directly to 20%). Take it most of the way cleanly and then throw on the processing in software.
@nategdocs Then at 0:15 I conformed the 60p to 24p so it played back at 40% speed (no blending, 24 real frames every second). It's slowed down due to conforming only, just like you would do in Cinema Tools for FCP.
@ijustwannacelebrate I didn't say that I often am on a shoot that has budget to rent a RED camera, but I definitely prefer it. Most people rent high-end cameras for a day or two, specific to a shoot.
I thought Twixtor looked a tad worse than Optical flow surprisingly. Apple Motion-Blur by far best for artefact prevention, despite all the extra motion-blur. AE surprisingly good.
I never really noticed the blur distortion found in your AE Pixel Motion and Twixtor in other samples I've seen for those softwares. I've never seen any samples of Motion, but it looks like it does a much better job in creating slow motion with blur, with very little to no distortion. If you had the choice of only one of the three to use, ever, which would you use. Based on experience, and not just from this particular sample. Which by the way is very informative. Tx.
Hello mate, great video, very helpful. One question...was the footage conformed to 24p before you applied effects like twixtor or did you add the plugin to the original 60p footage?
Great test. I'm looking for good software to slowmo vids. I've got FCP Motion 4 . Whats your opion about fcp motion 4 vs twixtor? What i see in your movie is that both are at the same level. Is it worth to invest in Twixtor or does FCP Motion 4 the same ??
@bekijkmijnvideo I think that either Motion or After Effects does almost as good of a job as Twixtor. Twixtor shines when you're doing advanced tweaks, but for most footage the Motion option is probably as good (or better).
@deevo101 It's probably going to happen any time you have a moving subject, even if the background is totally flat. The big exception? Machines, gear and things that are geometric. Like mountain bikes.
@MikeFolden Thanks, man! My opinion is that Motion has a slightly better effect with human subjects (especially things like sports or dance), but filming at true 120p is obviously the best.

In my opinion the Twixtor won because besides the quality of the image is done in less time

Apple Motion Clear winner. At almost 600.00 Twixtor is definitely not worth the cost. Invest that money on a better camera or lens.

So, how about using AE and then enabling Motion Blur before rendering, maybe that could cover up the ugly stuff.

Twixtor is best :)
goldenguy12345 2 months ago
@goldenguy12345 no, there is very little difference in the amount of distortion between AE and Twixter. Motion is, however much worse than either.

with AE pixel motion, the clip had a a bit of a matrix feeling to it

must say twixtor was the only one without noticeable distortion around movement

If you slow down 50% first then just go down it will be a better slowmo in Twixtor!

So from 0:09-0:21, you just straight up slowed it down in AE, without twixtor or motion, but you shot at 60p..?
nategdocs 5 months ago
@nategdocs There was no slowing. I shot at 60p and played it back at 24p, dropping frames so it plays back at realtime (100%).
