If they played hockey decades ago like they play now,we would never have seen the greatest play-maker of all time>Wayne Gretzky+Super Mario etc.Why should a talented player-goal scorer like #99 have a goon protecting him?Is he in the wrong part of town?Is he a murderer or something?Goals are the main objective of the game or else each game would end 0-0!I have to admit as stupid as fighting is in our game,it was the thing i liked the most.It was fair.one on one.I stopped watching hockey in 1999!
@Pwndizzle..lol.take it easy young man.I am Canadian.i said were better i liked that style of hockey. Perfect beautiful passing & scoring, especially on the powerplay. Not this crap, clutch & grab, hitting by the back &/or when the referee isn't watching, etc. It's suppose to be fun & you must put the puck in the net! Not injure the other guy for life. They have no respect for one another. They are so stupid, how can they not know > "what you do to us, we will do to you"! It's not a war,it's a game.
@murra84"bobby do what coach said to him"you wrote: And if coach would said to him to dance naked in a Moscow arena before and after the game,he should did it too?
I love what Bobby did for the flyers, but this is just awful. Hitting with the intent to injure just because he's playing better than you has 0 place in the game.
Miracle in 2011,miracle in 2012,when in 3-rd period you were loosing 1-6,before your refs began "the real judge".But anyway you lost even with your refs exactly in USA and Canada.Strange miracle, may be regularity,or real life?
About"2nd rate players".In 1985 Edmonton(Stanley Cup Champion)played vs CSKA(USSR Champ),Gretzky's team lost as always,result was 3-6(one more time,lost on a Canadian ice).They were"2nd rate players"?
@ginoo353 I remember all Olympics, when USSR played vs Canada and remember the result of this games(something like 10-1).And most of all I remember two last World Junior Championships, where Canada lost to Russia ON THEIR OWN ICE,promised to destroy and fuck anyone on their's way before the competition.Remember,it happened 2 weeks ago
it may have been war, but remember russian players were just athletes, they weren't politicians or soviet officials or KGB. So the commentary that this is war is just retarded and Bobby Clarke is a piece of shit for doing this. Granted there are cheap shots and emotions run wild, but to just take out the best player of the opposing team like that, is just disgusting. I don't think Canadians these days would accept that. Imagine Ovechkin purposely breaks Crosby's ankle in an olympic game.
@PavelSTL you got some nerve accusing us like that. Pretty sure i saw mikhailov trying to take esposito out of the series by constantly hitting him from behind. Its a two way street. You wanna injure our best player, then we are going to fuck up yours. We beat you fair and square. Btw, nice try with the attempt at cheating in game 8 by replacing the bad ref with some random shmuck off the streets who was even worse than the other one. But as always, canadas best always prevails against russia.
@scottwill19 Could you show video, where "mikhailov trying to take esposito out of the series"
You said "canadas best always prevails against russia"
Remember 1-11 in 1977(with brothers Esposito,Savard,Ellis...),0-6 in 1979(Cheevers,Lafleur,Clarke,Robinson,Savard...),1-8 in 1981,when your Gretzky cryed(REALLY DROPPED TEARS),0-5 in 1982,3-6 in 1986 vs Oilers winner of a Stanley Cup with your so-called profs(Gretzky,Lemier...).All these games Canadians lost in Canada, not in USSR
@MrVasilenkoK there is no specific footage of mikhailov doing this, the only way to see it is if you get the DVD of the summit series. why do you think esposito was constantly having problems with him? and btw, your only legitimate win was in '81, when we had all our best players. maybe in '06 too, but cmon....we had draper and bertuzzi. here is all our legit games with our best players.
@scottwill19 1976 Canada Cup we played by second team(we didn't have first two lines:no Mikhailov,Petrov,Kharlamov,Yakushev,Shadrin,Anisin,it was experimental team). After your Mr.Eagleson stole Canada Cup in 1981 this tournament never was in favour in USSR.Tikhonov considered only World Champs and Olympics as a competitions with a high level priority(exclusion 1987)
Resume:
Yours 1972(6-5)and1987(6-5)
Ours 1979(6-0)and 1981(8-1)
Don't talk about 1976,80,83,86,when you lost totally
@MrVasilenkoK as true as that may be, all of that is in the past. we beat you in the most recent best on best. so that means until you beat us in another best on best, we are better then you at the moment. and even if you did have all those players in 76, we still wouldve stomped you with orr, savard, esposito, robinson, shutt, lafleur etc. and i dont talk about those years because they werent best on best. btw, in the summit series, you couldnt beat us even after our players...
@scottwill19 Savard,Esposito, yes I remember,we played vs those"MONSTERS"in 1977.Result was,RIGHT NOW READ CAREFULLY,1-8(T.Esposito was in the net) and 1-11.Professionals can not allow to themselves to loose 1-11.
Lafleur,OK:1979 lost vs Soviets 0-6,1981 lost to the Soviets 1-8,1982 lost to the Soviets 0-5.Enough?
Our days:two last WJC played in US and this year in Canada.Your so-called"unbeatables"lost both times to my country ON YOUR OWN ICE.
@MrVasilenkoK you fail to realize that the players you named were our only best players and the rest were like 2nd rate players. you guys had all your best players, while we only had a few. and "our days"....dude, if the only thing you have to lean on is the WJC than you have a problem. like yea, thats great and all, but compared to the olympics, i means barely anything. and in 2011, it was a miracle for you guys. kuznetsov literally put the team on his back...both times.
@MrVasilenkoK and dont talk to me about the world juniors. prior to those loses, we beat you in 6 straight years, so up yours....remember what happened in 05? we made your juniors, who had both ovechkin and malkin, look like little girls.
@scottwill19 "it was a miracle for you guys. kuznetsov literally put the team on his back"
Really splendid Canadian profs, who allow to "fuck"all your team only by one Russian player.
Recall what happened in 2008.Canada had Heatly,Gagne,Bowmiester,Getzlaf,Nash,Staal,Spezza,Toews,Doan vs Russians(most of them KHL-ers)3-4 NHL-ers.You lost as usual. All of this your players were "2nd rate players" too?Whom do you need to play normally against us:Rocky,Rambo,James Bond?
@MrVasilenkoK ....havent played for the majority of 4 months. you guys were at peak conditioning, while our guys were enjoying a break, but then had 2 weeks to get back into shape in order to play the series. even when we werent in top condition, we still beat you. no dont talk to me until the next time you beat us in a best on best tournament. loser.
i really think this series could have played out different though 2 all star Canadians bobby orr and bobby Hull were both unable to play if they were who knows canada might have swept the soviets probably not but its a thought
The Canadian "system" was inferior in every way, except for the thuggish play. The Soviets created the possession game we see in the NHL today. They developed training methods, workout regimens and conditioning that is in use today by professional players all over the world. They revolutionized the game of hockey. They forced Canadian hockey to drastically change. Clarke insists that they proved that Canadian hockey was superior. Which hockey brand stood the test of time? The Soviets.
Just wanna clear something.... Clarke is my all-time favorite player and he was one of the best the Flyers have ever seen....... There's many reasons why we were called the Broad Street Bullies and this is one of them... Nobody is gonna nickname you the Bullies if you back away from every hit...
This was not hockey, this was war. This may have been a cheap shot but I believe it evens out the soviet kicking the cdn with his skate. Regardless of what you all say, you can't change the fact that Canada won the series, and you would be hard pressed to say they didn't earn it. Stop bitching and realize that Russia did their fair share of cheap shots as well
@ninja101ism There's a difference between a "cheap shot" (that pretty much everyone was guilty of) and intentionally taking the best player out of the game for the rest of the series. Totally different level. And yes, Canada won, but there are no conclusions that can be drawn from THAT kind of win. Here was the Canadian strategy: We obviously can't beat the Soviets at hockey, so let's create chaos on the ice and see what comes out of it. Well done I suppose. Impressive? Hardly.
i think the rule of law still applies in hockey games. This would be labelled as assault if it happened outside of the rink. whats so different in hockey?
criminals should be punished, not awarded with gold medals.
@yurislapabitch do you want to arrest the whole russian team for poisening the canadians food and for calling them all night so they couldnt sleep to?
@yurislapabitch The rule of law does not apply in hockey games. Otherwise everyone would get citations or jail time for body checks, hockey fights, etc. To suggest that should happen is asinine.
@yurislapabitch Professional hockey is probably governed the same way as a local just-for-fun league. So go ahead and do that. Then no one has to watch you bitch about stuff that happened 40 years ago on Youtube.
@Schaichopath you are a fucking moron....so you're saying I can be playing hockey, and randomly swing my stick at some1's face and get away with it? Now in law swinging with intent to injure to the leg or face would be the same..... Go ask Bertuzzi if the law apply's to hockey
I love don cherry,he's almost always right, about hockey&very funny but i completely disagree about our style of playing,it's not war on the ice,it's just a f**ken game, cup, for gold or not, just play more intense, not like a coward, backstabbing child. The Russians were always better than anyone in hockey. The tic tac toe passing, unity, respect. You wanna fight,go boxing,if you want to check play football but cheap shots?+it's on tv&if you do it to them they will do it to you, unless they have integrity!
@yngvids russians were better at hockey? tell me then why canada leads total medal counts in all tournaments except for the iihf u-20, and canada leads iihf u-20 in gold by 6 medals.... theres always some russian, or some swede, who waits by the computer for a day that canada loses a game, or a canadian player does something wrong, so they can hop on out of the bushes and spray their canadian hate all over anyone. if you hate canadians so much, stop playing their sport.
@yngvids its not just a hockey game, this whole series was a political allegory so to speak; communism vs democracy; good vs evil. this whole series was much more then just hockey. name one other time schools were cancelled or televisions brought into classes or work cancelled for 'just a game'.
@Beltskis81 i4got it was very serious back then, but i was a kid. It's still just a game in the end. hey have no pressure to fight hit illegally win at all costs! There are thousands watching live, referees, players, millions on tv,i just don't get how a player thinks he can hit to injure on purpose&think he won't get caught&hit himself!Even though clarke did not try to hide it.Do anything & everything to win that is hockey! Put the puck in the net&stop the puck from going into urs PERIOD.bodychecks?
@yngvids ya man, i understand what you are getting at and i agree with you 100% if we were talking about todays game, just not this circumstance (the soviets were by no means playing clean either). hockey was also different back then in terms of protecting players. clarke would be gone 20 games today and back then he wouldn't have even been talked to about it. that also plays a big part. for the record, i do thin clarke was a dirty SOB, but one dirty player that could light score none the less
@tjackson76 Bloody hell, I did want to underline how shitty he was with the article and did vice versa. Never understood some of the rules of your language. Though it might be forgivable since I've never used this word before watching this video.
kharlamov was certainly an unexpected force. the soviets, and kharlamov i particular, stunned the nhl'ers. and c'mon. it;s FERGUSON advising CLARKE to take a cheap shot. Anyone surprised one goon didn't ask stapleton, lapointe or white to do it?
Hey I just finished watching the entire series again on dvd. Kharlamov continued playing right until the end of the series. I don't think Bobby broke the ankle, I think it was more propaganda now that I have reviewed the series. Nobody can play on a broken ankle. And everybody had a lot of injuries throughout the entire series. Kharlamov was just another injury played up by the Russians. The refereeing was another story with Canadians getting the shit of the stick there.
This was in game 6 of the 1972 series in Moscow. Score was 3 to 1 for Canada. At about 10:22 of the second period, Clarke slashed Kharlamov in the left ankle while the play was going to Dryden in net. Clarke and Kharlamov met up and had words. Then Bergman and Kharlamov had words. Kharlamov went to the bench and Clarke got nailed for slashing.
Kharlamov was one hell of a player. Russia Canada series of 1972 woke up the NHL and North American hockey with guys like Kharlamov out there sticking it to them with speed, talent, endurance and sportsmanship. What Clarke did was wrong, he may not have intended to break Kharlamov's ankle, but he did. Should have thrown Clarke out of the series. I respect what B.Clarke did for hockey, but he went to far with Kharlamov.
Oh thank you so much for actually understanding this situation and hockey altogether. I agree what he did was wrong, simple as that. I do respect Bobby for what he did but I do not honor it. To this day however, he still claims that he does not regret doing it though. They did what they did to win and truth is, its simply a human instinct.
@TheBluewaffIe Actually I just picked up the complete series on DVD for 1972. Haven't reached this part yet. Look forward to seeing it happen though. Russia sure woke up the NHL in this series. Hasn't been the same every since, which is a good thing. Still violent though, thank you Gary Bettman for your corruption.
Bobby Clarke was the Sean Avery of his day. A real asshole, who could play but was also a dirty player. Bobby Clarke got away with much of what he did because he could play, because he had a team of goons protecting him, and because he played in an era where pretty much anything goes. His slash was a targeted attack that Canada chooses to forget but it almost certainly helped them win the series. He should have been suspended.
Kind of sad, Bobby Clark (as instructed by Coach Ferguson, resorted to a "Broad Street Bully" cheap-shot, slash to take out the most potent Russian opponent. Not a very valliant win in my book. This casts a dark cloud over the series victory.
@br0sbr0sbr0s Hockey was different back in the day, understand that dirty shit happened all the time and players got away with it. I wouldnt say Bobby was just a goon, Bobby was a good hockey player who deserves some respect. It hurts me to hear a fellow canadian is ashamed of our boys who worked very hard and did every thing they possibly could to beat the russians and win for their country. However i would agree that the vancouver gold medal was cleanly won with no bullshit just great hockey!
@micanut48 ok, you keep puking over something that happened 40 years ago, I'm sure all the russians go to bed every night doing the same thing. yeah right.
@krusty627628 oh, so I guess that gold medal at the olympics didn't mean anything, or that first overall pick this year is Canadian or that most draft choices are Canadian.
LOL the Soviets were shocked by this!? The Canadians checked with the shoulder, the Soviets speared and slashed with the stick. This was a measured response to their pathetic version of hockey.
@dyolFFF there isn't a hockey organization anywhere in the world that doesn't have a player that would deliberately hurt another player to get the upper hand, if you think the Russians wouldn't do that, you're living in lala land.
everyone says the canadians were the dirty ones but the soviets were spearing and tripping up the canadians so canada finally got back and got back hard
1 u said u didnt have kharmalov or two players who went on strike we didnt have gprdoe howe or bobby orr or bobby hull cus the russians said no wha players and orr was injured and there was 8 times as many penalties so bad reffing as for example jp parise just motioned his stick at a russian and they called it
Funny how Bergman got kicked with a skate in the same series by Boris M. and no one says a thing about it. The truth is, both teams were out of control. I don't why the IIHF didn't take a tougher stance in terms of dicipline since they allowed this historic series to happen in the first place.
@perkuutti Russians are just crybabies. Face it. You lost. You'll never change that. And the referees were all communists over there anyway! So stop you're whining!!
Not having Bobby Orr really sucked too, that would have been one for the ages to see him doing an end to end in front of the Russian crowd. Too bad about Drydens play, he did struggle and was left out to dry on some goals but he played a brilliant 3rd period in Game 8 with some tremendous saves to keep Canada in it.
I think the best Team Canada was 1976 Canada Cup minus Dryden T Espo, and Parent......
Not agreeing with this kind of play but when you play a series of 8 games against the same team shit is going to happen both ways Weve all seen if happen in the NHL through the 70's, there were cheap shots and bench clearing brawls on a weekly basis back then.
Team Canada was unprepared and put together a mediocre squad. Espo, Cournoyer, Clarke, P Mahovlich, Henderson, Park, Savard, were our best, guys like Cashman, Perreault, Mikita, Ratelle and Gilbert should have seen way more time also..
@PERRYISGOD He's a talented hokcey player and being Cadian myself as well I'm proud of these actions. We had to beat the russians by any means nessesary, and with the help of this slash we did.
Bobby was a great player, but this moment really damaged his reputation as a hockey player. Kharlamov was a Canadian player in a Russian player's body with such talent, but Bobby, being the little shit that he was, had to bring his Broad Street Bully antics to beat the Red Army. If I was Canadian, I would be pretty damn pissed with the coaching staff relying on dirty tactics to win a game. It's also why I REALLY dislike Philadelphia hockey, using nasty, dirty tactics to win. That's not hockey.
@BuzzsawtheHedgehog Dude. I'm Russian. I think Canadians great players. But you're wrong, dude =) Rate objectively. I am not against the power of hockey. See how to play our Artyukhin, for example. But I believe that everything has a measure. The truth is that Bobby did not know the limit. He played extremely rude. Tried to injure the opponent. His style - to poke a stick in the face, kick board, attacking from behind. This is not hockey, dude. It's rude.
Well, to be honest, Bobby was a rat bastard, and I don't think he was all THAT great. Not up there with the likes of Orr, Lemieux, Gretzky, etc. The only problem I have is when players have to take nasty, cheap shots, like when Matt Cooke hit Marc Savard in the head with his elbow last year. But yes, Bobby was a big douchebag. Same thing with Dave "The Hammer" Schultz. And I can't disagree with you, either, what Bobby did to Kharlomov was damaging to the sport.
@BuzzsawtheHedgehog Yes that's right. Agreed. Kharlamov, then still playing after the injury. Already in other Super Series and National Championships. For clubs CSKA and Soviet Wings. He and two times got in a car accident. For the first time, broke into the car, he learned to walk again. He was told that he will never play, but he was able to get on their feet, and once again become champion. However, the second accident was his last.
@DmitryBaranov87 Yes that's right. Agreed. Kharlamov, then still playing after the injury. Already in other Super Series and National Championships. For clubs CSKA and Soviet Wings. @phille22 Don't forget the Flyers game two years later. It wasn't just Canadian Hockey, it was North American Hockey vs European style of play. As a Canadian I find this kind of play offensive and completely dirty. That's what the NHL was founded in. I like your comment. Too few people recognize that they played dirtier and dirtier as the superior Soviet style threatened to win the summit.

Montreal in 1982(lost 0-5) was"2nd rate players"?

it may have been war, but remember russian players were just athletes, they weren't politicians or soviet officials or KGB.
Serge1980 1 month ago
@PavelSTL you got some nerve accusing us like that. Pretty sure i saw mikhailov trying to take esposito out of the series by constantly hitting him from behind. Its a two way street. You wanna injure our best player, then we are going to fuck up yours. We beat you fair and square. Btw, nice try with the attempt at cheating in game 8 by replacing the bad ref with some random shmuck off the streets who was even worse than the other one. But as always, canadas best always prevails against russia.
scottwill19 1 month ago
MrVasilenkoK 1 month ago
@MrVasilenkoK there is no specific footage of mikhailov doing this, the only way to see it is if you get the DVD of the summit series. why do you think esposito was constantly having problems with him? and btw, your only legitimate win was in '81, when we had all our best players. maybe in '06 too, but cmon....we had draper and bertuzzi. here is all our legit games with our best players.

998uzi 1 month ago
The Canadian "system" was inferior in every way, except for the thuggish play. The Soviets created the possession game we see in the NHL today. They developed training methods, workout regimens and conditioning that is in use today by professional players all over the world. They revolutionized the game of hockey. They forced Canadian hockey to drastically change. Clarke insists that they proved that Canadian hockey was superior. Which hockey brand stood the test of time? The Soviets.
thinicer 1 month ago
Just wanna clear something.... Clarke is my all-time favorite player and he was one of the best the Flyers have ever seen....... There's many reasons why we were called the Broad Street Bullies and this is one of them... Nobody is gonna nickname you the Bullies if you back away from every hit...
CarrotPuncher 1 month ago
This was not hockey, this was war. This may have been a cheap shot but I believe it evens out the soviet kicking the cdn with his skate. Regardless of what you all say, you can't change the fact that Canada won the series, and you would be hard pressed to say they didn't earn it. Stop bitching and realize that Russia did their fair share of cheap shots as well
ninja101ism 1 month ago
@ninja101ism There's a difference between a "cheap shot" (that pretty much everyone was guilty of) and intentionally taking the best player out of the game for the rest of the series. Totally different level. And yes, Canada won, but there are no conclusions that can be drawn from THAT kind of win. Here was the Canadian strategy: We obviously can't beat the Soviets at hockey, so let's create chaos on the ice and see what comes out of it. Well done I suppose. Impressive? Hardly.

This pussy generation that we live in now would have Clarke crucified.. I hate how weak we've become.
jdodd82 2 months ago
This was in game 6 of the 1972 series in Moscow. Score was 3 to 1 for Canada. At about 10:22 of the second period, Clarke slashed Kharlamov in the left ankle while the play was going to Dryden in net. Clarke and Kharlamov met up and had words. Then Bergman and Kharlamov had words. Kharlamov went to the bench and Clarke got nailed for slashing.
RonnyJoeJimBobby 2 months ago

It's rude.
DmitryBaranov87 9 months ago
@DmitryBaranov87
BuzzsawtheHedgehog 9 months ago
@BuzzsawtheHedgehog Yes that's right. Agreed. Kharlamov, then still playing after the injury. Already in other Super Series and National Championships. For clubs CSKA and Soviet Wings. He and two times got in a car accident. For the first time, broke into the car, he learned to walk again. He was told that he will never play, but he was able to get on their feet, and once again become champion. However, the second accident was his last.
