  • Kenny G. #1 jazz author of all time.

    YEAH. RIGHT.

Besides from not playing shit in pandeiro (check what Nereu Mocotó can do) this guy knows nothing about jazz at all. Miles Davis. Herbie Hancock. John Coltrane. Charlie Parker. Thelonious Monk.

    Kenny G? Nigga, please...

  • voçe toca de mais me da umas dicas ai irmão sou brasileiro ve youtube ney do pandeiro da uma nota la porque tu e 11

  • Wow! You inspired me to buy a 10 inch tamborine, with calfskin and 16 double rows of 2 jingles each...I used to play tamborine (and other percussion) way back in the seventies in a disco, then a country rock band...My timing was always appreciated by the drummers and bass players...But! this big bad baby I bought is just a wee intimidating...I feel like a clutz...hehee...Thanks for the lessons! I have much to learn. God Bless you for sharing your talent...I Will keep watching!

  • @debbeejean, if you want to play the rhythms he's demonstrating here, you should invest in a real pandeiro. American tambourines with 2 rows of jingles simply won't sound the same, mostly because the jingles are far too loose for this type of playing- the jingles have to be tight so the patterns can be articulated cleanly. Also, calfskin is fine but maybe a little heavy...goatskin will give you a richer tone and will be a bit easier to play... have fun!!

  • @philmaravilha,

Thank you so much, for taking the time to share this information!

Phew; I am very happy to read, that it wasn't just my own inability to tame the jingles! :)

Thank you again for your kind and positive input!

  • amazing

  • FMV8, Tô com você. Se for tocar numa roda de Samba, atravessa. E aí, o caminhão atropela!!!!

    Vixe Mariiia!!!

  • He is big with percussion.

  • Quero aprender tocar assim para acompanhar meu pai na sanfona tocando forro e samba. abraços

  • It seems to be african music !

If you really want to listen to Brazilian percussion, this video is correct > watch?v=uyWt40GZnDk

  • não adianta, ginga só brasileiro tem!

  • @czacchia Idiota!

    Num é capoeira não,é percussão.

  • ta parecendo musica tribal africana e não Samba

  • went to hard rock hotel with him and my mom it was awesome

  • Kenny G sells lots of records. McDonald's sells lots of hamburgers. They're both good at what they do.

  • esse baitola la sabe tocar porra nenhuma

  • Faltou ele aprender a tocar pandeiro!!

  • tosco

  • Mmmmm... no, that's not real samba.

It completely lacks the true balanço (swing) of samba. For the true stuff check related video SWEET! Pandeiro Demonstration in Bahia. That's the real mccoy.

  • you right thats not samba its better its just african coolness

  • I see. "African coolness" disguised as bogus samba is better than authentic samba. Better from a commercial point of view? 200 million records sold? That's not just better, that's the pinnacle of music.

  • yeh but where does samba come from really truly

  • Now you said it. If it weren't for Africa, we wouldn't have anything to hear at all.

Except classical, and some folklore, but that's pretty bleak. I mean, I like Beethoven, but you can't live on Beethoven.

  • ta com falta de balanço? se acha?

  • Kenny G... the #1 jazz artist of all time. Really? REALLY?!

Influential, very talented, and important, yes. Number one jazz musician of all time? No.

  • uhashuas eita negao virado no 70

  • yeah man

  • genial

  • this guy's playing with kenny g..

    what a waste..

  • selling alot of records amkes you the best ...

    ???

    sick pandeiro much love

  • UM DIA EU TOKO ASSIM!

  • Haha! I love all these comments.. so funny.. GO KENNY G! Yeah despite the contraversy surrounding his band this guy is feckin amazing and is one of the best "gringo" pandeiro players I have seen. (wait a sec... is he brazilian? I dont know.. but I think not) Valeu Galera! beleza!

  • Mr. Powell,

This is one of the most musical and impressive pandeiro solos I've ever seen. That tone, those finger rolls; I could go on for a while. Amazing playing.

On the topic of Kenny G. He's not exactly my cup of tea. However, I respect the man.

I love Pat Metheny to death, and whereas I found his letter about Kenny G to be hilarious at the time, I now think it was very inappropriate. Mean, hateful, and above all else, unprofessional.

So, no, it's not "shame on you".

  • Mr Powell.

You're an amazing Pandeiro player but you should be ashamed of yourself saying the word Kenny G & Jazz in the same sentence.

How is Kenny G a jazz musician. After he tortured Louis Armstrong's tune.

    SHAME ON YOU.

Stick to being a musician and the pandeiro.

You'll save yourself from Ridiculous, Idiotic and almsot Ignorant comments.

    Peace,

    Sibagiba

  • you said in the last sentence; you're ignorant, ridiculous and idiotic. Louis tune 'Wonderful World' is a straight up 'pop' tune. There's nothing remotely 'jazzy' about it, at all. What the hell are you guys inventing?

  • As much as I like Louis and dislike Kenny, Pat Metheny's controversy around "Wonderful World" seems biased in the extreme. It's depressing to hear Louie, the inventor of Modernism in music according to some critics, doing such an easily digestible sugary pop tune. He obviously did it for money (nothing wrong with that), but to regard that tune as somehow "sacred" is absurd.

In fact, I think it's to be expected that such popular songs should get a "Kenny G makeover."

  • Is he playing an LP RMV PPA0182 with gold hardware - 10" ?

  • That solo was really cool. If only he hadn't mentioned Kenny G. Just the mention of that guy sends shivers down my spine. The bad type of shivers. He should just quit music and cut his hair while he's at it. Kenny G? No1 ? dont make me laugh.

  • Don't ever forget the fact that Kenny G works and pays his musicians well. Get off you high horse about what is and what isn't good. So many people people like his honest work and pleasant music, he is the shizzle, mo fo. Don't put down. Don't be a hatter.

  • @martincongahead Who cares what Kenny G pays his musicians? This is not about the money or record sales, but about the art of Jazz! So lets not be ridiculous and act like Kenny G comes anywhere close to Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, and the list goes on and on!! Any real musician that is in their right mind knows that Kenny G is a joke when it comes to Jazz music. So when you learn what good Jazz music is then you can start calling people haters!

  • what's wrong with Kenny's music, exactly? Give us a critique from a musical standpoint, not just a mindless 'he sucks' rant. What about the chord structure and melodic form is bad? How about the full tone he gets from the soprano that seems to evade everyone else? Is it the precision playing that bothers you, maybe he should be sloppy like 'real jazz' guys? You're an idiot and most of all, completelty ignorant re: music.

  • well the problem folks have with Kenny's music is that it sounds like muzak, elevator music. Its syrupy and drippy. He plays really boring note choices and his playing lacks fire and excitement, like a MIDI patch. That doesn't mean he isn't skilled, and certainly doesn't mean he hires slouches. Record sales don't make anyone the #1 jazz ARTIST the way it is said here. That makes it the #1 instrumental pop sales. But it doesn't stand up in artistry and innovation to say... Bird. my opinion? maybe

  • The reason why so many jazz artists despise Kenny G is because he sells himself as a jazz artist, although what he really is, is a pop saxophonist. When someone says Jazz, jazznoobs think of Kenny G. If you go and listen to real jazz saxophonists like Michael Brecker or Sonny Rollins, you'll hear that their music is much more complex than the simplistic nature of Kenny Gs music. When Kenny G improvises he only uses what we call pentatonic scales, something really basic in the jazz world.

  • @jubeidono

Kenny G is only No. 1 in sales. Relax...even though, yes, his vibrato is deadly.

  • @gratzr OK. Fair enough. But let's just be careful with our words. Best selling does not mean "No1 Jazz Artist of all time"? That is an insult to all the jazz greats. Miles Davis will be turning in his grave god rest his soul. Anyway it's all good. It's been very long since I wrote that comment. I have nothing against with Kenny G, or any musician for that matter.

  • la piel negra la lleva...

son ellos los maestros del ritmo

aunque a nosotros los blancos nos duela.

    absolutamente espectacular...

    mas encima le ponen onda.

    salu2

    chile

  • That is so amazing how he can play the pandeiro!!:o

  • Wow. Very impressive. This video would be better if the audio was in sync.

As to Kenny G, search the web for Pat Metheny's open letter to Kenny G (search "pat metheny on kenny g"). Very entertaining and enlightening.

I am guessing that RP meant to say "the #1 SELLING jazz artist of all time", and I'm also guessing that he has been eating those words ever since this video.

  • Known Ron for years, ranks up there with the best percussionist around.

  • Great solo. But Kenny G is NOT the #1 Jazz Artist in any lifetime. The hell with record sales, Smooth Jazz ain't Jazz. Kenny G ain't crap compared to Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Kenny Garret, Sonny Rollins must I go on??? But I love your Pandeiro solo

  • Not only isn´t Kenny G the greatest jazz artist of all times...he´s not even the greatest jazz sax player of all times !

  • Kenny G is indeed the #1 selling instrumental artist of all time; you can't dispute the numbers. You can like or dislike any artist or style, no one argues that either!

  • Ron Powell needs to go find out who Shri G. Harishankar and so do the rest of you.. Just search " G. Harishankar" and prepare to be blown away...

  • He probably knows him...personally.

  • you are comparing apples with pears, my friend

  • this was ment for the comment of mryaggi1

  • They both play hand drums, Yes the style is different but there is also a difference in talent...

  • this may be, and there is no doubt for me that harishankar was the best kanjira player ever, and it will be for sure a pleasure for every drummer to see him playing. but to COMPARE a kanjira player with a pandeiro player, using the argument "they both play hand drums" is a bit senseless, because they work in two very different fields of music. sounds to me like when persons discuss about french food, and then you hear something like "yes but japanese sushi is much better etc etc...".

  • A realized man knows that difference in taste only matters to someone that is still situated on a lower plan of understanding. For he forget's taste and then understand the intricacies of nutrition. It is the clarity of his notes and then the complexities of his composition that leaves Ron behind the curve.

  • very wise words, judge mryaggi

  • Incrivel muito bom!!!

    Very very good!!!

  • Nice, huuum.. but there is something missing..!

  • I think his comment about kenny g means number one SELLING jazz artist of all time. which i'm afraid is true.

  • Ron, I love your playing man!!

I've got to agree with many of the other comments though...stating that kenny g is the "greatest jazz artist of all time" seems to me very far short of the truth. i know that this is entirely subjective, but you know who listens to kenny g? people who don't listen to jazz! miles, monk, coltrane...they're the real deal!

  • good for rowing music background

  • Great solo & feel - love it! Nice RMV pandeiro as well....great promotion for LP pandeiros eh?!!

..and to the patronising "brasilian swing isn't there" comment. Keep up the good work mate, you'll go far.

  • Excellent

  • good chops but the Brazilian swing isn't really there... So KG sells millions of records... just goes to show you how the consumer just swallows whatever the record companies will give you.

  • You said it limberic! Well at least this guy finally but Coltrane in his place...just to play for the king of Thailand..played for those guys..Prince of Monaco and his friends..Jewelry too heavy to clap..anyway my friend no gig is worth that..Kenny G doesn't even need it. dang! btw. nice thumbrolls but takes away from the funk. Its like saying uhh or uhhhhh. "The difference between classic and pop music is information content" Prof. Greenberg S.F. Conservatory of Music. Peace

  • Ron is excellent in his pandeiro playing is Awesome.

But his remark on Kenny G being the greatest jazzman of all time? GAG!!! Well, KG sells but that does not make him the Greatest Jazzman! Walmart might outsell any other merchant but they appeal to the ignorant masses - sort of like Kenny G. Great sell out Ron - though no doubt you be paying your bills on Kenny G's popularity.

  • Amen!

  • lol...he is really into that pandeiro...I don't blame ya hun. I love playin the padeiro...always looks like ya drunk once ya really get into it...lol

  • Thers nobody like you Ron. God Bless You Big Brother! BIG"G"

  • I bought a pandeiro watching video like this...congratulations...I hope to learn

  • hey dude kick ass solo!

  • How are you Ron? Sounds good! Take Care Mario Monaco Pandeiro

  • excellant video. Shows hand movements fairly well. Very exciting to see. Thanks a million. Will come back to your site soon
