Besides from not playing shit in pandeiro (check what Nereu Mocotó can do) this guy knows nothing about jazz at all. Miles Davis. Herbie Hancock. John Coltrane. Charlie Parker. Thelonious Monk.
Wow! You inspired me to buy a 10 inch tamborine, with calfskin and 16 double rows of 2 jingles each...I used to play tamborine (and other percussion) way back in the seventies in a disco, then a country rock band...My timing was always appreciated by the drummers and bass players...But! this big bad baby I bought is just a wee intimidating...I feel like a clutz...hehee...Thanks for the lessons! I have much to learn. God Bless you for sharing your talent...I Will keep watching!
@debbeejean, if you want to play the rhythms he's demonstrating here, you should invest in a real pandeiro. American tambourines with 2 rows of jingles simply won't sound the same, mostly because the jingles are far too loose for this type of playing- the jingles have to be tight so the patterns can be articulated cleanly. Also, calfskin is fine but maybe a little heavy...goatskin will give you a richer tone and will be a bit easier to play... have fun!!
It completely lacks the true balanço (swing) of samba. For the true stuff check related video SWEET! Pandeiro Demonstration in Bahia. That's the real mccoy.
I see. "African coolness" disguised as bogus samba is better than authentic samba. Better from a commercial point of view? 200 million records sold? That's not just better, that's the pinnacle of music.
Haha! I love all these comments.. so funny.. GO KENNY G! Yeah despite the contraversy surrounding his band this guy is feckin amazing and is one of the best "gringo" pandeiro players I have seen. (wait a sec... is he brazilian? I dont know.. but I think not) Valeu Galera! beleza!
This is one of the most musical and impressive pandeiro solos I've ever seen. That tone, those finger rolls; I could go on for a while. Amazing playing.
On the topic of Kenny G. He's not exactly my cup of tea. However, I respect the man.
I love Pat Metheny to death, and whereas I found his letter about Kenny G to be hilarious at the time, I now think it was very inappropriate. Mean, hateful, and above all else, unprofessional.
you said in the last sentence; you're ignorant, ridiculous and idiotic. Louis tune 'Wonderful World' is a straight up 'pop' tune. There's nothing remotely 'jazzy' about it, at all. What the hell are you guys inventing?
As much as I like Louis and dislike Kenny, Pat Metheny's controversy around "Wonderful World" seems biased in the extreme. It's depressing to hear Louie, the inventor of Modernism in music according to some critics, doing such an easily digestible sugary pop tune. He obviously did it for money (nothing wrong with that), but to regard that tune as somehow "sacred" is absurd.
In fact, I think it's to be expected that such popular songs should get a "Kenny G makeover."
That solo was really cool. If only he hadn't mentioned Kenny G. Just the mention of that guy sends shivers down my spine. The bad type of shivers. He should just quit music and cut his hair while he's at it. Kenny G? No1 ? dont make me laugh.
Don't ever forget the fact that Kenny G works and pays his musicians well. Get off you high horse about what is and what isn't good. So many people people like his honest work and pleasant music, he is the shizzle, mo fo. Don't put down. Don't be a hatter.
@martincongahead Who cares what Kenny G pays his musicians? This is not about the money or record sales, but about the art of Jazz! So lets not be ridiculous and act like Kenny G comes anywhere close to Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Herbie Hancock, and the list goes on and on!! Any real musician that is in their right mind knows that Kenny G is a joke when it comes to Jazz music. So when you learn what good Jazz music is then you can start calling people haters!

what's wrong with Kenny's music, exactly? Give us a critique from a musical standpoint, not just a mindless 'he sucks' rant. What about the chord structure and melodic form is bad? How about the full tone he gets from the soprano that seems to evade everyone else? Is it the precision playing that bothers you, maybe he should be sloppy like 'real jazz' guys? You're an idiot and most of all, completelty ignorant re: music.
well the problem folks have with Kenny's music is that it sounds like muzak, elevator music. Its syrupy and drippy. He plays really boring note choices and his playing lacks fire and excitement, like a MIDI patch. That doesn't mean he isn't skilled, and certainly doesn't mean he hires slouches. Record sales don't make anyone the #1 jazz ARTIST the way it is said here. That makes it the #1 instrumental pop sales. But it doesn't stand up in artistry and innovation to say... Bird. my opinion? maybe
The reason why so many jazz artists despise Kenny G is because he sells himself as a jazz artist, although what he really is, is a pop saxophonist. When someone says Jazz, jazznoobs think of Kenny G. If you go and listen to real jazz saxophonists like Michael Brecker or Sonny Rollins, you'll hear that their music is much more complex than the simplistic nature of Kenny Gs music. When Kenny G improvises he only uses what we call pentatonic scales, something really basic in the jazz world.
@gratzr OK. Fair enough. But let's just be careful with our words. Best selling does not mean "No1 Jazz Artist of all time"? That is an insult to all the jazz greats. Miles Davis will be turning in his grave god rest his soul. Anyway it's all good. It's been very long since I wrote that comment. I have nothing against with Kenny G, or any musician for that matter.
Wow. Very impressive. This video would be better if the audio was in sync.

Great solo. But Kenny G is NOT the #1 Jazz Artist in any lifetime. The hell with record sales, Smooth Jazz ain't Jazz. Kenny G ain't crap compared to Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Kenny Garret, Sonny Rollins must I go on??? But I love your Pandeiro solo
Kenny G is indeed the #1 selling instrumental artist of all time; you can't dispute the numbers. You can like or dislike any artist or style, no one argues that either!
this may be, and there is no doubt for me that harishankar was the best kanjira player ever, and it will be for sure a pleasure for every drummer to see him playing. but to COMPARE a kanjira player with a pandeiro player, using the argument "they both play hand drums" is a bit senseless, because they work in two very different fields of music. sounds to me like when persons discuss about french food, and then you hear something like "yes but japanese sushi is much better etc etc...".
A realized man knows that difference in taste only matters to someone that is still situated on a lower plan of understanding. For he forget's taste and then understand the intricacies of nutrition. I've got to agree with many of the other comments though...stating that kenny g is the "greatest jazz artist of all time" seems to me very far short of the truth. i know that this is entirely subjective, but you know who listens to kenny g? people who don't listen to jazz! miles, monk, coltrane...they're the real deal!
good chops but the Brazilian swing isn't really there... So KG sells millions of records... just goes to show you how the consumer just swallows whatever the record companies will give you.
You said it limberic! Well at least this guy finally but Coltrane in his place...just to play for the king of Thailand..played for those guys..Prince of Monaco and his friends..Jewelry too heavy to clap..anyway my friend no gig is worth that..Kenny G doesn't even need it. dang! btw. nice thumbrolls but takes away from the funk.
