You for got Abe Shihan (Great lost to JKA,he would have been the head of it now), and do not forget Osaka who JKA are trying to kick out now with Tanaka Sensei politics.Again I ask you in a humble way to put your fantastic Bunkai on youtube.As I said these Bunkais are only guide lines.People criticize Osaka Sensei Bunkai.We need to be taught ABC before we can go to WXYZ Bunkai.If you can physically fly and hit someone in the head,good on you.Not every one can do that.

@SKIFTIGER - This needs to be the final post as it's just getting silly now. Your request is far from humble and tries to mask the truth behind my criticism. By your logic if I don't like the food in a restaurant served by a top chef does that mean I need to duck into the kitchen and whip up a quick meal to demonstrate that my taste buds are okay? Or if my mechanic tells me that my car is finished yet it's blowing black smoke that I need to be able to get out the spanners before I can complain?

I think and God knows is that he has opened the door for narrow minded Shotokan Karateka's(Meaning their Minds) to develope the Shotokan Karate,combining Tai Chi,Goju Ryu,Goju Kai and what ever to advance in the altemate technique.I have JKA grades and SKIF grades.At my age JKA grade offers me very little as for SKIF karate with emphasis on breathing and relax form offers me a lot.Kasuya Shihan who broke away from JKA and SKIF is also taking Shotokan Karate in a different and higher level.

@SKIFTIGER - Don't tell me that you're now calling on God to back you up? Man I'm outta here! So now we have Kasuya who is taking karate to a different & higher level too? Let's not leave out Kagawa (JKS), Ueki (JKA), Okazaki (ISKF) and every other other Shotokan head instructor. No doubt they are all busy developing and improving their karate. So what? That's got zero to do with these crappy efforts at Kata Bunkai.

I am sorry,I can not agree with you,It is not been a huge fan of Kanazawa Kancho.Without doubt he has take Shotokan Karatedo to another level from Nakayama Sensei.If you have and I hope you have trained under him.One will start to understand where he is going with his Karatedo.Nakayama Sensei understood his capabilities and for that reason he wanted Kancho Kanazawa to take over JKA.Because of all the in fighting JKA had he decided to leave and now has the largest Shotokan organization.

@SKIFTIGER - Obviously you are an SKIF fan, and that's fair enough. I've trained under Kanazawa Sensei in Japan and elsewhere & spent time with him off the dojo floor as well. He's a very nice gentle man and has been a huge driving force within Shoto Kan karate. In fact he personally told me the story behind his 'expulsion' from JKA which happened just as he was preparing to shift to a new life in Canada. So kindly tell me where you think he's going with his karate apart from the bank that is.

Kancho Kanazawa is a legend.Do not think he does not know what he is talking about because his English is not that hot.He has ample wisdom and Knowledge of Karatedo.I will go as far as saying the greatest Shotokan Master to be.He has taken Karatedo(Shotokan) to another level.

@SKIFTIGER - He certainly has 'taken Karatedo to another level'. The trouble is that it's backwards with this demo. He looks to be really struggling with this Bunkai. English or not (and his English is actually not too bad), this demo is not the best. Of course if you're a huge Japophile or Kanazawa Fan then it won't matter. But in truth this is poor.

My sensei was a student of Kanazawa to 2nd Dan. For Tekki Shodan we do a flow drill that puts pressure on both participants - lose your structure and you go down. The move above starts the 4th of our sequence -using footwork (45 degree step) while receiving a (fast moving!) ura zuki into a chop - and in position to sweep - if the chop is blocked you're opponent can sweep you. We use nami ashi to step inside while trapping the right arm for a hip throw. Fast drill that teaches great close quarter

In a real fight you all will flow depending on the reaction of the attacker. Anyway, kata traing has to be gradually brought closer to real situations (more flow, less form, more variations & additions...).

Re : your suggestion that students will only learn "the real" use....that is "real situations"....gradually....is why gradually ??

WOuldn't it be an idea to prepare the student for self defence (proper bunkai)along with the principles of the kata...Just my thoughts

I mean, bunkai has to be brought as close together a real situation state, ie. eg. non locked movements, as much as the the student's ability permits.

@The13hands  it looks so "easy" on film but you really have to be trained in the subtleties to see what is really going on. if he used this move, it's most likely effective & if not, thats why we learn katas, so that you have muscle memory of what comes next, and so that you learn combos,etc. if you earn a black belt in shotokan not a lot of MMA guys are going to survive the fight. watch their technique closely, they have no technique, MMA is just glorified street fighting w little technique
