  • i love this song,i graduated in 1977 and started taking care of my mum full time...she just passed away 9-9-2011 and autumn was her favorite time of year so I dedicate this song to my mum nancy, she was the most patient, kindest, caring, selfless person I have ever know...several weeks before she passed,i played a lot of moody blues music for her...justin has been my favorite singer songwriter since I was 12 ...his voice is pure magic....

  • Very sorry, I stand corrected, the video was recorded in 1978....Breathtaking performance and love song.

  • Both berrygirl1964. Remember that this was recorded in 1964 though, does it matter ,no, Justin is still as beautiful as ever !!!! Very sorry babe I have a very bad eye, also a cold, my money has not come in yet, I am gutted !!! Please wait for me...... Where are you, where do I have to go to....... I should know. Could be another 4 or 5 days. Please meet me halfway????? I cannot do this alone. Need your help. Your loving darling and deeply devoted soulmate.

  • This excellent song evokes clear memories of the start of a new school term (N .Ireland).I love the use of woodwind .Songs by early Kate Bush (such as' Wow 'and 'The Man With The Child In His Eyes' )and other great songs of this era (such as 'Run For Home' ) by Lindisfarne ,contain this type of beautiful orchestration.Sadly things have since become cold and digitalized !

  • She died 12-19-01 and was buried 12-22-01. She bridged the gap for me. Forever autumn that will keep me from eternal winter and bridge into forever spring. She taught me the Holy Spirit is not a theory. Love never dies, it may hibernate in the fall but will be reborn. For you Gay. I will finish what I started. Believe in me now for I believe in you. Forever yours, Mark

  • i walked down the isle to nights in white satin and plan to leave this world to this song. absolutely adore justin hayward, the moody blues and jeff waynes war of the worlds. i once had the pleasure of meeting justin at a signing, i mentioned to him that i walked down the isle to nights in white satin, he was touched and said in all the years i was first person he knew of that had done that, and i only got married 15 years ago. LOVE LOVE LOVE HIM

  • wow!!! he looks so young here!!!

  • @kyoshintama Yes he certainly does! This is from 1978; he was GORGEOUS in the '70s, 80s and 90s - I have the concert DVD, A Night at Red Rocks from 1993 and he still looked hot! Still very handsome as an older gentleman I think!

  • haunting, beautiful melody

  • What romantic lyrics.

  • Happy Birthday Justin!!

  • Justin ist still alive and kicking!

  • Such a great song. Justin was gorgeous then and is gorgeous now. A wonderful and talented man. Go on forever, Justin.

  • Such a beautiful man with such a hauntingly beautiful voice. This will always been my favorite song. I was about sixteen when this song came out. The Moody Blues are my all time favorite band and Justin is my all time favorite singer. Thanks so much for the video.

  • mike was replaced by patrick moraz. i think moraz was with yes.

i've been a moody blues fan since 1970 as well. their music is so beautiful and melancholy. i still listen to their music as well as blue jays, justins solo LPs and pinders solo. there is no one else like them

  • First heard "Isn't Life Strange" as a young teen around the end of 1970.... soon "Watching and Waiting" became my favorite Moody Blues song... 2nd only to God reaching down and snatching me from darkness by sending me into the loving arms of Jesus... I also had a "Blue Jays" 8 tracker when a couple of them decided to pursue other paths... then Michael Pinder left... quiz: who replaced him and what band was he with?

  • :O oh it's THIS song xD I heard it mentioned on Top Gear and looked it up through curiosity (stig's cousin's favourite song), didnt realise it was this, I've only ever heard it as part of war of the worlds :P

  • ...... Justin Achieving The Dream....What A Beautiful Sight To Behold....Empassioned With Truth,Love Of Life,And Nature....Long Distance Voyager....This Journey....A Wonder.....

  • After seeing this on Top Of The Pops in the 1970's ( Aged about 10 ) it was at that moment I realised for the first time that I was Gay. I fancied him for years..well until I was about 12....Thanks Justin. You changed my life .

  • I was a huge Moody fan and particulary of Justin long before this song came about. I remember purchasing Days of Future Past, as a kid, in fact it was my first album.

  • This is the song that led me to Justin Hayward's music and the Moody Blues. I kept getting it in my head and I had no idea who it was singing, and when I found out what it was I went searching for more and now I'm an addict. It is just so stunningly beautiful.

  • I think we know that now, sis. You have repeated this story more times then I can count.

  • Never publically.

  • True enough.

  • andrases - thats exactly what your dad said when you dropped out of the trench.

    you fuckwit mofo!!!

  • An absolutely poignant piece -- Lovely!

  • Easily one of my favourite songs of all time. Just beatiful.

  • A very poignant piece. Feels so very satiated, directing me back to the pure innocent stage of my life. A total submission to the memories captured by each and every lyric ... now that I'm in my autumn stage. But then, I just have to freeze whatever is there (left). And let the myth of that innocence stay forever ... forever, I'm Autumn.

Peace, light and love to all.

    Cheers,

    Autumn Myth

  • this song always makes me feel so sad and yet i love it and use it to bring me back to base

  • This is in my top 10 of alltime favourite songs. It reminds of 1978 every time I hear it. Only Justin could sing a song like this. Haunting, beautiful .... makes me feel complete.

  • Bliss

  • I grew up listening to Jeff Wayne's The War Of The Worlds (a family favourite), and as the icing on the cake, I got to see Justin sing this as part of the musical last night at the O2 arena, and he was brilliant. Whoop!

  • beautiful song and no better voice than justin hayward.evokes many fine memories of better days and happimess.

  • In this song, the world is beautiful.

  • pure heaven

  • And yet another of my funeral songs... lived in Hastings in 1978 when this was a hit and loved to listen to the whole double album of Jeff Wayne, knew Richard Burton's texts by heart and used to play the album in the dark while laying on my bed.

  • Same here, very uplifting music, can literally lift people out of darkness and dispair.

  • Love the way this is filmed...three Justins on the screen at once...*lol*

  • wow, the most gorgeous voice in the world! I love you Justin! WHy are you married?

  • Lol, if he is married, why no ring?

  • Justin Hayward and The Moody Blues is my favourite band. This song, which appeared on Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds, is an unknown Classic to most. Thanks for posting this video...I have never seen the clip before.

  • i remember this from the radio when we were kids in the back of the car, driving through the welsh mountains on our way to our hols, always remembered it i must have been 15 at the time...but how i loved it..still do now x

  • One of the best love songs ever written. Jeff Wayne is da man!

  • The start of it has bad sound quality, but are you uploading from video? beautiful song, anyway :D

  • He looks a little bit like a cross of John Paul Jones and Mike Oldfield.

    Great song.

  • There alot of big hits from before that don't get played

e.g.some of the Beatles big hits(Strawberry Fiels and Hello Goodbye) to name a few

  • it doesn't get played on some stations because all they

care about are the "Stones""Zeppelin""Heart" and AC-DC

    Etc. Etc

  • good stuff!

slightly different arrangement to the War of the World's (Jeff Wayne) version I've had for years and years. I probably prefer this one..

  • It's a great song. I have it on a greatest hits two disk set. Better version.

I agree with andrases[aged 18 from Norway] -- he does look gay. It's the hair maybe. When the song was big[1978] though, he wouldn't look gay. It was cool for an arty dude to have a Sun silk hair do. These days I see a lot of gel being used and don't know how to classify those people. Except to say they all look silly. Why pay someone to disarrange one's hair? At least Justin got his money's worth.

  • If this song is so big, how come we don't here it on the radio ?

  • It gets played on those awful FM radio stations which use the expression "classic rock", with regularity. Which is why I don't listen. Those FM stations see music as something to separate the advertisements. No respect.

  • I gave this one star but thats only because my finger slipped. It is a 5 star performance. Absolutly beautiful!

  • This is classic. But watch out the martian's may come get you. Me, as long as the have the Moody Blues CD I'll go for the ride.

  • I love it! I love him , I love the moodyblues.

this one goes in the favs so I can watch it a million times.

  • a lot of gay people can and could be rock gods dont you think? and as if sayin some one is "gay" is a prerequisite to being awful? some how is a in this day and age a fuckin disgraceful thing to utter as it ids quiant and has no discernable bloodly place in todays society's...supersilliousness belongs to the young i guess?.

  • justin hayward was a major player in the late 60s hes deffo NOT gay he was a rock god with the moody blues when denny laine left . wise up lads

  • Who cares if he's gay or not! Get over it and appreciate this song and the voice singing it! Awesome indeed!

  • Yeah, I agree. Thanks for that.

  • Gosh he looks like a god damn gay!

  • He is got a pretty face, it's true, but HE"S NOT GAY!

  • Yeah, he is. Gee I wish they'd remaster this clip.

  • berrygirl1964, I think both. He is a beautiful man indeed. :)

  • your both obviously blind but have good taste in music!

  • one of the best songs of all time. goose bumps definately!

  • oooh!

  • I wouldn't be surprised if this song is a big seller as an MP3 format. Looking at the comments (and of course listening to it), it obviously has some powerful emotional resonance with listeners. I also wonder if the few odd homophobic comments about this singer come from men who may not understand the effect of that. Hayward's charisma was pretty imposing. Can you think of any performers like him? I can't, really. Maybe Sting? James Blunt? That guy from Coldplay? Probably not.

  • Justin is just beautiful!! I love you Justin!!

  • I too love you Justin!!!!

  • Is he lip synching? I think that's pretty standard on the Top of the Pops. Anyway, he certainly looked great in 1978, no doubt. You couldn't film him from a bad angle, there just wasn't one.

  • love this from War of the worlds. Shame the sound quality isn't great.

  • Wonderful lyrics: The tradgedy of time; beautiful echoes of the past.

  • two words "goose bumps".

  • hazeldonn,"goose bumps" and lots of them too

  • actually, it was written by Jeff Wayne for War of the Worlds...and Justin was the original singer of it. After that he released it!

  • this was first the tune to a lego advert in the late 60,s then a track for vigrass and osbourne a few years later before justins version in 1976..

  • I must be losing the plot.... of course I meant "every time I HEAR this!!!!

  • That is ok, this song does the same thing to me. I bought the 45 after the first time I heard it. I still have it.

  • Wow!! I know I'm being repatative here but this is just so lovely, so moving. Justin Hayward's voice is almost ethereal, I tingle everytime I here this.

  • This was Done for the Disco'esque double album of Jeff Wayne's "War of the Worlds". I remember this album well and loved it as a kid. Justin also did a short track for that album called "The chances". Richard Burton narrated that album as well. Great Song. I love the Moody Blues. Great to reminisce.

  • called "The chances?" What are you saying? The Tracks Name is "The Eve of the War".

  • Yes it is called that. But justin Haywards Contribution to that track is called "The Chances". ;)

  • wow, i didin`t know that, thank you :)

  • I didn't know that was Richard Burton's narration, but it makes sense now. I saw it on the Youtube for the first time just the other day.

  • Definate Knob Jockey !!!!

  • I got goosebumps watching this - he really has one of the best male voices ever.

  • what great friggin song,I loved this forever, the moody blues and those associated were such talents

  • This is a wrenching classic loved by millions. What a gift to the world,... thanks for the post.

  • This is lovely. The song is so haunting and Justin Hayward's voice is divine.

  • Ace track, loved it, loved war of the worlds, and "Gay" is a very pathetic comment for this, don't be so un-original, numpty lol

  • justin is not gay, he is just a unique voice and tall, and looks good.

  • Gay... gimme a break, just cause someone can sing like an angel and look like one. BTW his daughter Doremi is about 30, and he and Marie are still married.

  • I think it was ment as a compliment..

  • First saw this on Kenny Everett's video show; as a kid I thought it was a brilliantly wrenching song; still do. Thanks for the post.

  • To the last comment - Justin has been married to

    Ann Marie Guirron (19 December 1970 - present)with 1 child

    according to IMBb!!!

  • How many gays want to...go with him!

  • LEGO EVEN...SORRY

  • the commentary also says "Knights" in white satin! how did that mistake ever start? god bless Justin and the moodies to rise above he kind of stupid "Criticism"

  • the commentary says soppy!thats not nice! touching loving etc not soppy!

  • I love the Moody Blues! I love the way Justin Hayward writes and sings and plays! He good on the eyes too! WOW!I We love him here in the U.S.A. too!

  • I love this song like there is no tomorrow. This could so easily have been written by Justin as it's got his soul all over it. Not the greatist version i have heard but still worth posting.

  • who wrote it?

  • I believe Jeff Wayne wrote it possibly in collaboration with another lyricist whose name escapes me.

  • It was written by Gary Osborne and Paul Vigrass and they released it as a single in 1972 but it didn't chart. When Jeff Wayne was working on War of the Worlds, he noticed the appropriateness of the lyrics to the storyline. Justin's performance of Nights in White Satin made Jeff think of him as the obvious person to record the song for the album.

  • I remember going into a 'Record Bar' store in a local mall in 1978 where almost an entire display wall was devoted to this new release called 'War of the Worlds' by Jeff Wayne. Along with the album's intro, this song is the highlight of the set. There's a reason why Justin Hayward and the Moody Blues have continued their popularity for over forty years!

  • wow, simply beautiful

  • grat song reminds me of 3rd year at school

  • ishmia9,I agree with your comment a 100%,(Damn...That man is stunningly beautiful! and his soft soothing voice is as well) :D

  • Damn...That man is stunningly beautiful! and his soft soothing voice is as well

  • Thanks for all the comments from all of you Moody Blues and Justin Hayward fans out there somewhere. :)

  • one my all time fav... man this guy can sing and write... so absolutely undervalued... bummer

  • I couldnt agree more.

  • hey guys does any one know why this song got so little airplay?

  • I'm guessing it is because it wasn't a Moody Blues song, but was taken from Jeff Wayne's "War of the Worlds" 2-LP album project. I don't think it was ever released as a single, though this mix was given to radio stations as a promotion for "War of the Worlds". Unlike a single release from a major label, it didn't get the promotion support from the label that normally drive album sales by major artists.

  • This song made the top 5 in the UK in 1978 and received a great deal of airplay. It got into the US charts on the strength of airplay alone but a distribution error delayed it's release in the US by a week. Radio stations weren't aware of this and thinking that the song hadn't moved up on the strength of sales just thought it hadn't proved popular and stopped playing it.

  • Thank you, MoodiesFan for posting these videos! I absolutely love the Moodies, in my opinion, they are one of the greatest bands of all time. Forever Autumn is such an incredible song, Justin Hayward is awesome.

  • A timeless song that will live forever!!

  • it was written for a LP call war of the worlds got some great stuff on it from thin lizzy to David essix

  • Poor video quality or not, thanks for posting. Good to see the performance to go along with the album.

  • pissed that it wasnt on the last ever totp.

  • Great song! Justin is so wonderful!

    gibson girl

  • A truly moving song, but a poorly kept recording; proof that the greatist singer/songwriter of all time gets little general recognition these days.

  • Love this song shame the quality of the vid is bad. Still rocks though and i love this song!!!!!
