Awesome story! sydneyorgren .It's a true classic, love the song,it brings back some good and bad memory's.G wish I didn't say NO!"regrets" ,funny, I play this every time I get a chance to remind me of where I came from, and damn proud of being a Australian.
20 years ago, as a young Londoner I spent a year in Sydney during the time this song came out. For years later I tried to find it but couldnt for the life of me remember who wrote it or what it was called. So glad I have at last found it, takes me back to beautiful Sydney and being 20 again every time I play it. Great memories of a time I will never know again.
hey mate had to respond to your posting as i could of written it myself...i too spent a year in oz 20yrs ago and this was one the anthems. best year of my life and will never be bettered!!!!!!!!
Wendy and Paul are husband and wife , Shannon Noll stay the fuck away from this song ! you have fucked every other classic 80's aussie song,u aint fuckin this one ! should be our national anthem , i got all his cd's and tapes :-)
what an anthemic song! Avoided all the kitsch and mandatory sax solos of 80's big hair music - timeless - just don't let Shannon Noll fuck it up like he did What About Me
bloody right. i've been overseas for most of the last 13 years and i always play this song when i get homesick. one of the most patriotic aussie songs out there
Thanks so much for this. Whoa, goosebumps here. Way back then, I saw Paul Norton and Wendy Stapleton sing this, accompanied by strings, on tv. Think it was on Hey Hey. Beautiful song, beautifully sung. Throw this one into the mix for our new national anthem I say.
It was Australia Day 1993, I was living in the Netherlands. Was in a pub in Amsterdam when this song came up on the jukebox. It was like a beacon calling out, made my way to the jukebox, so did another Aussie guy, then the guy who selected in came up, another Aussie. There we were 3 strangers on the other side of the world....today 15 years later we are still mates. This song really is an anthem!! Thanks !!
Yes I have been searching for this for a while too, only one version of someone singing it live.. bad quality.. that's is great!! Thanks!!
Top song!!
Reminds me of driving on the open roads, drinking cans..lol... oh not while I'm driving, in the passengers seat..lol... No I'm in London, lol...memories!!
An excellent, under-rated singer, he has been married to Wendy Stapleton (Wendy & The Rocketts) for years and they have a daughter.

A beautiful song. I'll never tire of hearing it. However far from Australia one is, one's always a bit closer when this song comes on.
