Here is my advice to the makers of this game, if you want to help us learn with this...thing, then take some Graphic Design classes PLEASE!
I've seen better graphics put out by my N64! the images all looked waaay to blocky for me to pay attention to what they actually were.
In short, if this thing is gonna ever be compared to WoW or FFXI or FFXIV then it really needs a major overhaul to it's Physics Engine, and Graphics Engine.
I wonder if they'll ever think to use this game for Biology, I don't much like discecting frogs and rats O_o Watching Sims perfeorm surgery on one another would also be more entertaining XD
Second life really does open up many educational opportunities. It is a great way to learn a variety of information. I really like how there are replica versions of historic landmarks all across the world that you can visit. Otherwise, you would have to see them on expensive vacations or just look at pictures on the web. It is also great for the business world because you can use it for meetings. Powerpoints can be uploaded and used for everyone attending these meetings.
I believe that Second Life provides great educational opportunities for any type of student. As seen in this video, if you wanted to learn about what is in the inside of a Dell Computer, or experience the inside of a Van Gogh painting, you are able to do this in second life. Another educational tool that second life offers is allowing students to "teleport" almost anywhere in the world and gives numerous facts throughout the world.
I really enjoyed learning what this video had to teach. I would love to see Second Life be used in many educational ways in the future and possible became more popular than what it already is. I think it's very beneficial to teachers and students. Excellent job on the video!
I had never even heard of Second Life until my Intro to WEB class this semester and when I heard we'd be playing a game for the class, well, I didn't understand how we could be 'playing a game.' After watching this video, I realized that SL is more than just a game, it actually has many educational purposes. From going inside a dell computer, to learning how to do architecture and landscaping, or role playing among many others, SL can be educational to someone who is willing to give it a chance.

I found this video educational. I didn't really understand the extent of what could be done in Second Life. You can go experience virtual models of places that you might never have the opportunity in real life. I found the scavenger hunts interesting. Nice ideas, reminds me of the old Neverwinter Nights project "Revolution" and goes way beyond. But how do you make it practically viable to let schools condone Second Life, considering how heavy the sex industry is there?
Schools are on their own sims, generally PG sims where that kind of content is not permitted. Further, as of this writing, only 18+ are allowed on the grid at all, so this is currently a dominant tool for colleges, as opposed to public school children.
On the contrary, over a hundred colleges have a presence in SL and are hosting at least some of their classes. The US military also owns roughly twenty sims and is using them for training and education of personnel.
I rebuild 1920s Berlin to show people the golden age of this city before the Nazis took over.
Next to Living History (dressing up and recreating the past at a historical locations) or building a real timemachine, Second Life isn't a bad alternative.
I tried it out because I was curious, now I frown when I learn a museum or institution is not represented in Second Life.
This may be the way to learn in like 20 years but definately not now. The game would crash in the middle of class, I mean look at this video. it was even lagging for them!
The world is advancing to a new stage and higher level. Online education is nothing new as most universities offered that for those who are busy and still wish to learn. But that's only a small part as most teachers in the world aren't techie enough to accept such concept. The problem is the students are ready for such a things but the teachers aren't. So we need to work on the evolution of the teachers before such things can come true. In another 20 years those don't evolve will go extinct.
This game is a disgrace, the people who play it are also a disgrace...the people who made this video are idiots, and need to get out more, go for a walk, see a friend, maybe even read a book...BUT DON'T SIT ON YA FOOKING PC ALL DAY PLAYING A NON-CONSEQUENTIAL GAME...second life is verging on insanity
@MrTalkingSense This is the point.. The mentality any new generation isn't the same as the previous, and it doesn't help to yell at them and thell them they "should" have different interests. Not on such a major scale. You have to meet them. Also, by no means are massive multiplayer online games (MMOs) inconsequential.. Neither for society nor for individuals playing them. You can't ignore such a massive movement of society and expect to understand.
Okay, it's a nice idea and all, but the reprecussions far exceed the benefits.
First: People spend enough time in front of computer and TV screens as it is. Imagine the long-term (possibly permanent) damage this could do to peoples eyes if it becomes a normal part of their lifestyles.
Second: How would this be any more interesting than a classroom? No matter what, doing the same thing over and over is boring. Especially if your just sitting still.
just cause i showed my mum this video shes thinking about unbanning me from teen second life :) :D (supervised though so i stay nice and safe ) :) shes the best
and it has to be educational....... YAY EDUCATION!!!!!
It's not the question about who is first and who is second. SecondLife exist in our true life so if you are working in second life and earn your living there it's considered more like a job. And if you are retired and spend you time there making friends and chatting then it's a life style. It's not real nor it's fake. Virtual worlds are more like the in-between. Remember that behind every avatar is a real person.
There's no gameplay and no game. You can create games with it, among other things, but it is primarily an interactive environment that can be used for lots of things. It's a game engine, of sorts, with a built-in programming language. I use it for business and school.
Some use it for music and arts too! ^^ The music academy in SL is a good example of learning music thru second life. Not to mention those really nice live concerts the musicians in sl are pulling.
Seems ;like way too many people want to critisize any1 trying to make a difference these days. I wonder if thats because every1 is so cynical and negative! Or just dumbasses. - (probably both)=
TRUTH IS- Yea I guess you could call it a game, and the idea is kinda cheesy,-but so what!- Applications of this for education and possibly alot of other things it wasn't originaly created for = are WONDERFULL! THIS IS COOL! And you will probably just see more of S.L.. So open up and enjoy. PEACE.
"Traditional lectures do little to hold the attention of a generation weened on MTV and World of Warcraft" ....2ndLife is the solution? Feel free to suceed the Union in your 1st life and take your 2nd lives with you. I'm sure Japan will have you.
Do you mean secede? Because people want to use different methods they should leave the country?
You MUST be a teacher, to be so offended by students wanting to take more control over their own education. I, as a student, have always been underchallenged in traditional classrooms, but because I could never afford a private instructor I had to sit with my hand in the air while teachers struggled to get less motivated students to ask a question or two. Waste of time and waste of potential.
omG aLL uTooBe ComMenTerz arr DUMM!!!1 i kent believe u r such sheepz LOLz!
anyway while this is an interesting concept and i agree that to some extent this could be educating, the truth of the matter is that it's slow. a book or classroom gets straight to the point. it's far more "effective". it just takes not being a wuss and getting down to work to get anything out of a book or a classroom.
Second life is a fantastic opportunity for people to create anything they can imagine, within a 3d setting. I just visited a fascinating build called the "Museum of the African-American Experience", and was blown away by what those people were able to create. It was a virtual walk through African-American history. You should include it in your next video as a place with tremendous educational value.
to the people that say that second life players are fat: well, im not saying everyone in second life is thin, but how can you be sure of that? Hey im not fat. XD
No it depends on WHAT kind of games you are playing. SL in the other hand is not really a video game if you go over to the business and education part. It just happens to be able to create games of all sorts with its built-in programming language (lsl scripts).
SecondLife is a virtual world, not a game. It's a completely interactive, user oriented and created world in which you can be and do anything you want.
That's description is exactly what games are. Virtual world isn't real life and it doesn't count in the "natural world". People can learn from anything, but we all have to live and survive in the real world where you interact with real circumstances. Including sickness, stress, love, life and death. Once you leave the keyboard, the things that you made or have become in SL are non-existant. False reality. It's a game.
The objects you created won't follow you to real life but the experiece does. That's what all about learning, gathering informations. And we can't denied that Second Life has the largest data base of infomations around from ALL over the world. That alone is endless possibility.
Actually no, it's not. To either of those. First off its not only possible to be in SL and never spend a dime of your real world money, but you can also make a decent amount of real world money from it. I have a friend who pays off her rent each month on the money she makes from her clothing store in SL, and another who supplements what she gets as a student with her own store. And neither of them are fat.
Ok, this is my first time ever to post a comment in youtube, but I gotta say, it seems there is a subliminal message in this EDUCATIONAL video. At 3:42 to 3:54 there is a background voice saying that "you're worthless". Interesting huh? XD
@Nokua if you notice the sim that they are on is supposed to model what it's like to have schizophrenia. the "you're worthless" is part of the auditory hallucinations a schizophrenic may have. no subliminal messages at all.
technology: you can look at how computers and similar things work in 3d animations. Art: you can always draw on the computer (if they would add that feature) Music: Some kind of Quiz, like recognize this tone or how many strings are there on a guitar and stuff. Drama: Role-playing! So... you can probably learn a lot from this game, but i bet you learn more at school. When you can just (apparently) FLY away from your classroom... it's way too easy to skip lessons!
There are attendant script to keep track of who is in and not. So you can't really skip schools without notice. And with interactive scripts and books the teachers can turn the books for you to the page he or she is currently teaching. And with streaming videos and such the class can never be boring.
THIS IS BULLSHIT. NO WONDER EVERYBODY IS SO FAT! Seriously you can get way more knowledge in one week of school then a year on that stupid game. Anybody who wastes money on this retarted game should get a life. Go outside, who knows you might actually like it.
is not a game is second life if it was a game a normal game then the game will have a end this is not that you do everything you do in real life this is like online class so please read before talking shit
No, it's so much more. Have you ever heard of a game that let's you build games inside of the game?
In this world you can build a World War II game, or a Fantasy swords and sorcery game, or a tutorial to explore human anatomy. OK for real power you also need Photoshop and an animation tool but. DUDE. SL is so much more then a game.
People do get fat when they spend whole days infront of their comp. But VR systems such as this have potential. And it might be, this is how our future will look like - people living their 'real' lives in computers as second lives.. I don't like the idea of it, but it might be the path we'll all (have to) follow.
Second Life used to be a good educational platform however times have changed and the stability of second life has ruined any good purposes of being able to utilize it correclty
Times can change back though. All Linden labs needs to do is keep adding server farms, and hard drives. It has been working fairly well since I've been using it. Yeah a few crashes but I'm still having a blast and learning a lot.
Ahh yes, but then cant you decive ppl useing this game aswell?
You know there is Intelligent Design in US, claims all day to be Science, but fails on every account.... Who will fact check in Educational Second Life?
some how I dont think the way to solve education problems caused by kids being over exposed to game onsoles should be solved by just sticking them infront of a pc for even more time
it'd be easier to solve if more parents took responsibity and stopped their kids spending all day on game consoles and compters and encouraging or forcing them into the real world more often
in my opnion this "solution" would only add to the problem in the long term
I see where you are coming from, but as a senior in high school, i spend most of my time at school sitting in a chair not learning anything new.
With the strict curriculums the teachers don't have any room to be creative and with No Child Left Behind they have no power to present challenging content to students who are accelling.
All of this leads to mass boredom and lack of anything constructive in the classroom.
School is not the 'real world', school is a daycare.
as much as i like second life i whole heartily agree if parents would take responsibility and keep there kids from playing games all day and playing m rated game them people like jack Thompson would keep there mouths shut and your not even supposed to be able to get an account if your under 18
You can actually make money on second life, open a business, or get a job, or use it to meet clients, save travel expenses and promote your "real world" endevours what ever they may be. The current SL economy is worth about 7 million US dollars, but it might blow up exponentially.
Yess. But a lot of cool stuff in the game cost's money. But you can get a job in SL and get money from friends and contests. ^^ I have 4000 Lidens and I never spent a cent of real world money.
And schools in second life ain't free too! ^^ As far as i recall, there aren't much "free" in real life schools as well once you are age 18 or higher. Oh yes. SL is for 18 and above only if you didn't read the agreement when you signup.
I own a corporate education negotiations training firm, and I think that for the first time, the promise of "on-line learning" is going to be answered by SL. With tough economic times, firms do not want to fly people around the world, but they also have not found any other technologies to teach soft skills, like negotiations. SL provides the primal/visual environment that people need to learn, that is being being able to interact "face-to-face". Thanks for posting this video.
I think the fact that second life is a janky piece of crap is the thing holding it back from being used as an educational tool. If van gogh saw one of those freaky looking people hobbling around in a low resolution replica of his paintings he would chop off his other ear and rip out his eyes.
It's a nice idea and all, but second life isn't built specifically for education, so it's nothing more then something that might be engaging or interesting only part of the time. The community is extensive so it's not practical to tout it as a potential educational tool. Besides, this isn't a virtual world, it's a game, an actual virtual world, by definition, is 'virtual reality'. If this is a virtual 'world' so is every game I've ever played. It's not a world, it's a community at best.
It's free to download and simple too (all you have to do is type up second life on GOOGLE) and search for the website when there you go to download second life) after you need a(user-name and password) to be able to get into second life (second life has many stuff to offer it's a very educational game it teaches you so much and most stuff you never thought were possible in real-life it has in second life....(anyway hope this helps)
How about this? when people are born freeze them and store them in cell blocks just like matrix. This way human interactions will be reduced to zero. WHERE THE HELL IS TECHNOLOGY TAKING US???? WHAT'S NEXT WHAT'S NEXT??????
I believe that would be preferable to many ppl... based on the context it would eliminate most violence.. war... suffering... It dosn't sound like a bad idea to me.
Wow, think outside the box for once, geez. This game was made for people who have computers, and, from what I know, less than half the world's population have it. And it's also your choice to try this interactive game out. Let's see...did the law ever force you to smoke or drink alcoholic drinks? No. So if you're going to be a dickhead, at least look smart and not write in caps.
it would be great, if there is a FREE MMORPG, where you can collect things, like berries, rare stones, fishes, pearls under the sea, grow pets, flowers and fruittrees up, and sell them. than you can buy decoration, dresses or things to invest more money, or buy a house. in full nature and without porn!
You guys don't even know the beginning of Second Life's potential. And BTW they were talking about using SL INSIDE a REAL LIFE classroom. But yes, stanford and harvard already conduct classes in their virtual universities there as well.
and recently The Military Defence University of the united states just built a submarine training ground there. As per information those in tech department of whitehouse are SL fan themselves. It's government supported officially and unofficialy both.
econd life is the biggest rip off on the net linden labs promises the world then robs you blind while turning you into a lab rat, technology has failed us.
if u promote this then u should not be an educator. your just promoting students to be as lazy as they can. to use this for educational purposes is the same as using wikipedia for a research paper.
Yeah its a great learning tool for kids that needs or wants to know how to build something or work together to make something. I just need a bit more ram and I'll be set to go ;). good idea :).
Did you guys listen to the video? It is extremely self explanatory. Look at it this way, I can take a class at a college across the country without having to deal with the expense of moving. Second life can help breach the gap that some people might face.
Second life is not a game by the way, so please try to get past that misconception. When people say it is a game they really show how uneducated they are.
SL is a great way to teach through immersion.. imagine learning about Greece when it looks like you're in ancient Greece and dressed in Togas, or learning about WW2 on the beach of Normandy, or learning about the landing on the Moon with the Lunar lander virtually there? It's not just a game and yes the graphics could be better but I imagine if you got a better video card it might help. Not sure. I've never seen photos or videos of SL with a great video card posted.
Not as well. Why not? It's too expensive. Would they let you try to build an airplane in a real school, even in the best college? No, it would be too expensive, too risky. In SL life... GO AHEAD!, try, make mistakes, try again. Recked the plane? No problem. Re-rez the parts. Ya see the difference? Second life, especially as it gets more and more sophisticated, can be a way to greatly improve real life, because we can try things out. It's a three dimensional drawing board, for the galaxy.
well.. online game cant teach children much, i think best knowledge is book, or maybe internet, but not some virtual online game, in my time in second life i never wanted to learn a thing, cause there are way to many places and things to see, why would anyone wanted to study in virtual word like sl?
wow, learning happens everywhere. you said,"i never wanted to learn a thing, cause there are way to many places and things to see". but every place you visit teaches you something.
As for studying in a virtual world like SL, it would be wonderful for people that cannot get to other places for finacial reasons or even disabilities that keep them housebound.
As for what it can teach children, social interaction, programming, and they can even play with design and other programs.
I think this second life educationa system is a totally interesting concept. This would be just one way to get children-- and all learners at that to learn in a virtual way as opposed to the same old way--a sage on the stage. To get through to all learners with many different learning styles, this would be one great and fun way to process information. Why not be creative and make education fun. WOW--WHAT A CONCEPT!! Education and learning must and needs to be fun and enjoyable.
i don't want my kids learning via a computer. what do you want to just plug then into a computer and say forget teachers to? maybe not, but this is a step in that direction.
I want my kids to learn on a computer, not totally, but certainly some and SL for kids is way different than the SL with naked dance poles swinging furries. The 3D of SL may just inspire them to make a better software program.
As for forgetting teachers, you are the most important teacher they have, regardless of where the classroom takes place.
Nicely done video but it makes a lot of assumptions about the educational value of SL and its users' (teachers and students) capacity to perceive and exploit the environments affordances and limitations.
Ah, Second Life, it is cross platform, you can use it with Windows, OS X, or Linux (and I'm sure it would work with BSD to). The environments are created by the users so the possibilites are endless. One second you could be sitting in a classroom getting some edumacation and the next second you could be watching naked furries pole dance (not lieing).
I've run into a few ppl. I was in iraq with, and also Alot of other vets, from my time and before...It's worth my time...

MrTalkingSense 2 years ago

Maybe this would be better for projects.

kololoilo 2 years ago
It's not the question about who is first and who is second. SecondLife exist in our true life so if you are working in second life and earn your living there it's considered more like a job. And if you are retired and spend you time there making friends and chatting then it's a life style. It's not real nor it's fake. Virtual worlds are more like the in-between. Remember that behind every avatar is a real person.

BaadRichie 2 years ago
There's no gameplay and no game. You can create games with it, among other things, but it is primarily an interactive environment that can be used for lots of things. It's a game engine, of sorts, with a built-in programming language. I use it for business and school.

Some use it for music and arts too! ^^ The music academy in SL is a good example of learning music thru second life. Not to mention those really nice live concerts the musicians in sl are pulling.

Waste of time and waste of potential.

anyway while this is an interesting concept and i agree that to some extent this could be educating, the truth of the matter is that it's slow. a book or classroom gets straight to the point. it's far more "effective". it just takes not being a wuss and getting down to work to get anything out of a book or a classroom.

SecondLife is a virtual world, not a game. It's a completely interactive, user oriented and created world in which you can be and do anything you want.
bakaichigo 2 years ago
That's description is exactly what games are. Virtual world isn't real life and it doesn't count in the "natural world". People can learn from anything, but we all have to live and survive in the real world where you interact with real circumstances. Including sickness, stress, love, life and death. Once you leave the keyboard, the things that you made or have become in SL are non-existant. False reality. It's a game.
FreeMTrider 2 years ago
The objects you created won't follow you to real life but the experiece does. That's what all about learning, gathering informations. And we can't denied that Second Life has the largest data base of infomations around from ALL over the world. That alone is endless possibility.

Actually no, it's not. To either of those. First off its not only possible to be in SL and never spend a dime of your real world money, but you can also make a decent amount of real world money from it. I have a friend who pays off her rent each month on the money she makes from her clothing store in SL, and another who supplements what she gets as a student with her own store. And neither of them are fat.

@Nokua if you notice the sim that they are on is supposed to model what it's like to have schizophrenia. the "you're worthless" is part of the auditory hallucinations a schizophrenic may have. no subliminal messages at all.

how do you do lessons such as:
PE, Technology, Art, Music, IT, Drama etc.?
Doctorwhite1995 2 years ago
technology: you can look at how computers and similar things work in 3d animations. Art: you can always draw on the computer (if they would add that feature) Music: Some kind of Quiz, like recognize this tone or how many strings are there on a guitar and stuff. Drama: Role-playing! So... you can probably learn a lot from this game, but i bet you learn more at school. When you can just (apparently) FLY away from your classroom... it's way too easy to skip lessons!
togarda 2 years ago
There are attendant script to keep track of who is in and not. So you can't really skip schools without notice. And with interactive scripts and books the teachers can turn the books for you to the page he or she is currently teaching. And with streaming videos and such the class can never be boring.

some how I dont think the way to solve education problems caused by kids being over exposed to game onsoles should be solved by just sticking them infront of a pc for even more time
it'd be easier to solve if more parents took responsibity and stopped their kids spending all day on game consoles and compters and encouraging or forcing them into the real world more often
in my opnion this "solution" would only add to the problem in the long term
sajuuk212 3 years ago 3
I see where you are coming from, but as a senior in high school, i spend most of my time at school sitting in a chair not learning anything new.
With the strict curriculums the teachers don't have any room to be creative and with No Child Left Behind they have no power to present challenging content to students who are accelling.
All of this leads to mass boredom and lack of anything constructive in the classroom.
School is not the 'real world', school is a daycare.

Thanks for posting this video.
snimj1 3 years ago
I think the fact that second life is a janky piece of crap is the thing holding it back from being used as an educational tool. If van gogh saw one of those freaky looking people hobbling around in a low resolution replica of his paintings he would chop off his other ear and rip out his eyes.
georgeplaneteer 3 years ago 2
It's a nice idea and all, but second life isn't built specifically for education, so it's nothing more then something that might be engaging or interesting only part of the time. The community is extensive so it's not practical to tout it as a potential educational tool. Besides, this isn't a virtual world, it's a game, an actual virtual world, by definition, is 'virtual reality'. If this is a virtual 'world' so is every game I've ever played. It's not a world, it's a community at best.

SL is a great way to teach through immersion.. imagine learning about Greece when it looks like you're in ancient Greece and dressed in Togas, or learning about WW2 on the beach of Normandy, or learning about the landing on the Moon with the Lunar lander virtually there? Not as well. Why not? It's too expensive. Would they let you try to build an airplane in a real school, even in the best college? No, it would be too expensive, too risky. In SL life... GO AHEAD!, try, make mistakes, try again. Recked the plane? No problem. Re-rez the parts. Ya see the difference? Second life, especially as it gets more and more sophisticated, can be a way to greatly improve real life, because we can try things out. It's a three dimensional drawing board, for the galaxy.

Ah, Second Life, it is cross platform, you can use it with Windows, OS X, or Linux (and I'm sure it would work with BSD to). The environments are created by the users so the possibilites are endless.
